Where are the fruit cake eaters?

I make my own. I didn't make any last year and my dh bought one. Yuck. I told him tonight that we had to get the ingredients tomorrow so that I can get it made. It makes several of them so what I do is vacuum seal some and put them in my deep freezer. They taste great. I don't use any alcohol at all in mine.

tigercat I haven't meet a fruit cake I didn't like.
What brand did your DH buy?

My late DH absolutely LOVED fruit cake - as well as mincemeat pie (neither of which I can stand).. The last year that he was alive for Christmas (he died in Jan. of 2005), I was amazed at how expensive it had gotten.. However, I made sure he had a nice big one..:lovestruc

By then we knew it would be his "last" Christmas, so we bought him all kinds of "junk" food that had previously been a "no-no" - or only allowed in limited amounts.. I also baked cookies until I thought my arms would fall off and it makes me happy to know that he was able to eat all of his favorite treats - and as much of them as he wanted - before he reached the last 6 days of his life and was unable to eat anything at all..:sad1:

I don't know how much most cakes go for, but the one I order is $28 for 2lbs. and I have been getting it for 8yrs now and that has always been the price.

Pooh67 it was from a local grocery store in town. I think we are just used to mine. I have been making them since we got married 33 yrs. ago.

The Collin Street Bakery has a new store up on I-45 that is simply wonderful. The CSB has the best fruitcakes

The only fruitcake I will eat is the one from Collin Street Bakery. (That pineapple cake is good too.) I just shipped one to a relative up north. As a former Texan, she appreciates a CSB fruitcake.

I have never liked it but on the Food Network last night Alton Brown made one that I think actually may be edible. Recipe and instructions should be at the FN online. Biggest thing was everthing fresh and no icky candied/gummy fruit.

It isn't hard to make just expensive and time consuming!
I don't make it every year...but it brings back a lot of fun memories. It was a big deal for my mom to make it. My dad and his friend's mom would supervise the pouring of the cognac! Had to have lots of samples too(cognac!)
I love the smell of this cake....it doesn't taste bad either! Took me awhile to appreciate it but we have such funny stories over the baking of the cake it just makes it taste better!

As my dad always said, "best to have just a little cake and more fruit and nuts!" And don't skimp on the cognac!

Awww....you made me get all weepy. I miss making fruit cakes with my grandmother. Making fruit cakes was a serious matter and a must every Christmas. DH's grandmother was famous for her fruit cake cookies. I usually, just make them...they are much easier.

If I had been making them that long, I probably wouldn't eat bought ones either.

I just concocted a chocolate fruit cake cookie which I think turned out really well. First I soaked chopped dried pineapple, apricots and cherries in a good dose of Grand Manier until the fruit soaked up every last drop. Then I made a fudgy cookie dough with lots of good, melted chocolate, stirred in the fruit, some toasted pecans and chocolate chips. I baked off a few to taste and they were wonderful -- froze the rest of the dough to bake off before Christmas.
