Oh my gosh, I love fruitcake, food of the Gods!! My favorite is my Grandmother's followed by Claxton's.
I went to Ga in June, and got my Claxton Fruitcake.

My late DH absolutely LOVED fruit cake - as well as mincemeat pie (neither of which I can stand).. The last year that he was alive for Christmas (he died in Jan. of 2005), I was amazed at how expensive it had gotten.. However, I made sure he had a nice big one..
By then we knew it would be his "last" Christmas, so we bought him all kinds of "junk" food that had previously been a "no-no" - or only allowed in limited amounts.. I also baked cookies until I thought my arms would fall off and it makes me happy to know that he was able to eat all of his favorite treats - and as much of them as he wanted - before he reached the last 6 days of his life and was unable to eat anything at all..
The Collin Street Bakery has a new store up on I-45 that is simply wonderful. The CSB has the best fruitcakes
It isn't hard to make just expensive and time consuming!
I don't make it every year...but it brings back a lot of fun memories. It was a big deal for my mom to make it. My dad and his friend's mom would supervise the pouring of the cognac! Had to have lots of samples too(cognac!)
I love the smell of this cake....it doesn't taste bad either! Took me awhile to appreciate it but we have such funny stories over the baking of the cake it just makes it taste better!
As my dad always said, "best to have just a little cake and more fruit and nuts!" And don't skimp on the cognac!
Pooh67 it was from a local grocery store in town. I think we are just used to mine. I have been making them since we got married 33 yrs. ago.
