Your best Disney fact or insider story...

All of the animals on the Jungle Cruise are real. They are trained so well that they LOOK like animatronics.

Meanwhile, all of the animals in Animal Kingdom are animatronic.

;)

Because the hippos on the Jungle Cruise are submerged in water they function on air pressure so as not to risk hydraulic fluid contamination in the water. Thus they are constructed only with top portions that are visible thus making them.....

wait for it....

it's really a bad punchline but it's true....

Hippo-bottomless

This stuff is awesome! I particularly enjoyed the tidbits on the details in Liberty Square. Made it much more interesting!

The top of Epcot's Eiffel Tower has sticky paint on it to discourage birds from landing on it. Since it's a forced-perspective rendering, having a full-sized bird landing on the miniature tower would ruin the illusion.

That's funny! If you ever got to Disneyland, ride the Storybook Canal Boats at night. The ducks like to sleep on the island of London and as you pass by, it looks like London was invaded by killer mutant ducks. It's really cute.

There are no restrooms in Liberty Square because there was no indoor plumbing during the time represented.

and my understanding is that the bathrooms in Liberty Tree Tavern are technically over the line into either Frontier Land or Adventure land (forget which one) so as to not be in Liberty Square

Adventureland if I remember the KttK tour correctly. And the bathrooms in Columbia Harbor House are technically in Fantasyland.

The odd pink color of Tower of Terror is supposedly to make it blend with Morocco when viewed across WS lagoon from near Mexico.

There are also minarets on top of ToT to help the top of that building blend with the Morocco pavilion.

DiVine mesmerizes me. According to this site, she is played by many different women. Divine doesn't make eye contact, sign autographs or pose for pictures as she maintains character as an ivy or plant. Although, on several occasions, I have found her to be a little flirty! Oh that temptress.

At The Haunted Mansion, the rotating busts which seem to turn and follow your movements are stationary. They're not actual busts, but rather inverted mask type devices. The nose of the "bust" is actually the furthest point from the observer, not the closest. They are illuminated from behind. Since most people never expect to see anything so bizarre as an inside-out face, the brain interprets the illusion as a normal face which "follows" them as they move.

In the ballroom scene, the ghosts which appear to be dancing, dueling, etc. are not holograms or any high-tech effect. There are animatronics above and below the riders in the Doom Buggys and the ghosts are the reflections of these animatronics on a giant pane of glass.

Both of these techniques pre-date Disney.

I'm sure most have heard that the ceiling of the stretching room at MK rises, while at Disneyland in Anaheim the floor lowers. At DLR, the entrance to the Haunted Mansion is in front of the railroad tracks and the ride building is behind them, so the floor needs to lower so guests can pass under the tracks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there is no gum sold on Disney property. :goodvibes

Yes! They don't want the gum getting spit onto the sidewalks and getting tracked through the park! (Yuck!)

My fact is that throughout the Tower of Terror there are references to the Twilight Zone Television serious. First is the poster in the lobby for the Anthony Fremont band who is playing at the tip top club tonight. In both libraries very high upon the very too shelf there is a devil headed fortune teller from the episode "The Nick of Time". In the right library the broken glasses from the episode "Time Enough at Last". In the left library the alien (decoded) To Serve Man book is on the shelf from the episode "To Serve Man". The last one I know of is the ventriloquist dummy among the boxes and hotel items in the basement (the unloading area right after the ending film) from "The Dummy."
Also, the attraction itself is 199 feet tall to prevent it from needing a blinking red light on top for planes.
When the building was still under construction it was actually struck by lightening!

Other things that I haven't seen yet in this thread.

  • Mission: Space is the first theme park attraction in the world equipped with barf bags.
  • The 3D glasses for Star Tours, when purchased, were state-of-the-art and cost Disney $9 per pair.
  • Backstage at Epcot has a large machine that washes all 3-D glasses used everywhere on property. DL also has one. If a machine breaks down in one location, the glasses are airmailed to the other until the machine comes back up.
  • There's only one "real-life" application of the TTA PeopleMover technology - Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

It's a bit tough to do, but try to read the titles of some of the books in the loading area for Toy Story Mania....if you know your Pixar shorts, you'll find a few references there.

On our first KTTK tour our guide also acted as one of the concierges for the Castle Suite during the Year(s) of a Million Dreams. She said that not only were they some days struggling to find a guest to stay (many people thought it was a joke, didn't want to change travel plans, etc.) that many times they were right up to the 4pm deadline before they found someone. Also before you were moved into the suite (Disney retrieved your luggage for you), your luggage was inspected by dogs for drugs, etc. Once you were cleared you could request dinner, shows, rides, character meets, pretty much anything and it was our guide's job to make it happen.

Not really a fact, but take some time to look at the weather vanes on top of the rides and buildings in MK - they are works of art and often related to the ride or land they are in.

Someone can correct me if I have it wrong, but Madame Leota (in the crystal ball in the Haunted Mansion) is modeled on Leota Thomas a friend of Walt's and Disney Imagineer...but the voice was done by the actress who voiced Malificent and Lady Tremaine. She was also memorialized with a tombstone in the HM graveyard.

As you ride through the stairway scene on HM, notice that the candles at each landing go out only when the ghostly footsteps reach the landing....And in the attic Constance, the bride, has certainly made a point of "marrying up". Each of her wedding portraits is displayed with her increasingly swankier wedding gifts.

Walk down to the end of the small alley halfway along Main St....you can hear someone having their music lesson.

Jim

I can't wait to look for those busts.

I was 5 years old in 1973, and I rode through the haunted mansion with my dad, and I was scared the whole time. I probably ruined his one shot at it with my whining. I am sure he didn't burn another ticket. He would have liked to ride it over and over again.

My sister was 3, so my parents had their hands full. There is no way to fully appreciate the details in rides like haunted mansion or pirates of the Caribbean, without multiple rides.

I think I need to ride the haunted mansion again with my dad and redeem myself. I will promise not to cry this time.
