2017 Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend

Do you have to go somewhere and get your picture taken after the 10k if you're doing the gsc?
Nope. :) They take your picture at the expo and then will check it again at the end of the half - not at the end of the 10K. I think they also check to make sure you have a legit 10K finishing time and a legit half marathon finishing time before giving the GSC medal.

I'm studying the pdf of the race map now that I can enlarge it better, and it really does look like we will not be running through the castle.

I was going to suggest looking at the USATF course posted a few days ago here, but yah Anisum came through.

It does but the USATF course certification shows the castle as part of the course.

Yep.

I really love that map. Why can't rundisney give us that map?

which garmin do you have?

I have the Garmin Forerunner 220 which they don't make it anymore. I got mine in 2014. It's no frills and doesn't have a lot of features, but it gets the job done. It's so out of date it needs a chest strap to monitor a heart rate (which I don't use). I'll be using it until it dies LOL!!!

ETA: I also have the Vivosmart HR+, but don't use it for runs. For some reason mine is not accurate at all for pace or distance. Probably got a dud. When I run a 5K it will tell me I ran 4-4.5 miles.

So I think I have a shin splint. My daughter's soccer league has this stupid rule that teams cannot hold practice from the time regular season ends and playoffs begin. Her last season game was on Sunday and her team placed first in her division. Because of this we got a bye for the quarter finals and go directly to the semi-finals. She will not see her team again until the 15th!!! So anyway, I took her to the soccer field yesterday to practice and ended up doing more sprint type running than I anticipated. I woke up this morning and my shin was feeling like I banged against something. Nothing truly painful so I wore compression calf sleeves on my run this afternoon. I felt fine on my run and there was no pain, but now my shin hurts :( I'm about to go take some ibuprofen, do some stretches and ice it. I just read that foam rolling may help, but I don't have one!!! Anything else I should be doing?

Training question! Do any of you guys use the Galloway run/walk/run training method? If so, do you use the app?

Yes and yes! I don't use the apps any more, but I did use them for my first or second time training for each distance.

Thanks for the info. I thought I knew every bathroom in the MK, but I can not place the one to the left past Buzz. We always go to the big ones close to Space Mountain when we are in the park. I'll have to check them out on our MK day before the race.

We also do run/walk intervals. In fact, I switched to shorter intervals this year because we are faster that way. We usually do 30/30 with longer run segments when we feel strong. I use my Garmin and set it to 30/30. When we want to go longer, we just run through the buzz. I love my Garmin because it vibrates, so I don't have to listen for something.

Another short interval runner here! I am getting back into running after some time off and I started at 15 seconds running, 30 seconds walking. Then I moved up to 30/30. I have settled into 15/15. It feels a lot better to me.

I have this same watch. I used to wear the chest strap, but now I have a Fitbit Charge 2. It's kind of a pain to wear both, but it's better than the chest strap. I can't justify buying a new watch if the old one still works, and I don't want to wear a giant watch 24/7 like I do with my Fitbit.

@bellanotte10 i have the Forerunner 230 - updated version of the 220. I really like it.

Ouch!! I remember in high school when I had shin issues that the trainer had plastic Dixie cups that she filled with water and kept in the freezer. She'd tear the top edge of the cup off to expose the ice and hold on to the bottom of the cup and rub the ice on our shins...like an ice massage. Not sure if my explanation makes sense but there's a picture here: http://aerogeeks.com/2013/01/25/shin-splints-tools-for-treatment-and-prevention/

Ice, compression and rest will probably help! In my case it was the pounding from gymnastics/tumbling that did it. Sounds like for you it was the pounding from sprints!

Ouch! Sorry that happened!

You can tape them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xICBWe-UbTo

I had a really nasty case a few years ago that active release and massage helped a ton along w/ foam rolling. (It's almost Galentine's Day! Treat yourself to the massage!) If you have access to a pool, it might be a good idea to swap out a pool running workout for a few days too.

You could try a foam roller alternative to try to work out some of those spots too. People will often use a ball of some kind (different sizes/types work better for different amount of pressure) to roll out calves or will sub a kitchen rolling pin if they didn't have "the stick" or a tiger tail available.

So sorry to hear this! I get really bad shin splits when running. I've started wearing compression sleeves for all runs - even short ones - to help. There are a lot of stretches you can find online, but the one I find most helpful is to bend your legs under you, sit on your heels, and then lean back. Hurts like a mother, but it helps me. As always, YMMV!

I still do that! So cold. And melty. And you know what's funny? The cups in the picture in your link are the exact ones in my freezer right now!

I just have a question about corral placement. My husband (who ran cross country throughout college on scholarship) submitted a POT with an estimated finish time of 1:47 for the Princess half. However, he was placed in Corral I. How is this possible when that corral has a finish time of 2:48? He is worried about having to slow his 7:45 minute mile pace (which is what is most comfortable for him) because of all the people in his corral and those in front of him. He isn't concerned about a PR oanything, he just wants to run comfortably and slower isn't. It just doesn't seem safe for him or the other runners in the corral. Anybody have any clue as to why such a low placement for him?
I had a problem with my corral for marathon and I emailed them instead of waiting for the expo. They were really great about it, they checked my registration and emailed me back that they would change my corral at the expo. I still had to wait in the race relations line but it made the process so much easier since they didn't have to look up anything while we were standing there. disneysports@trackshack.com

My shin is feeling much better today. It still hurts a little so I'm going to just continue ice and stretching and will skip tomorrow's run.

As crazy as it sounds, if you have shoes with a higher drop, you might try simply wearing those a while too.

It was recommended to me a few years back and I associated it with voodoo or some such nonsense, but it actually helped me quite a bit.

Leaving for Disney 2 weeks from TODAY!! :yay: princess:

Starting to get Disney-itis BAD. Today I will be looking for some reports from 2016's races to start studying up!! :hyper:

Me too!

I am also currently planning a trip for 39. My DD17's HS band. That is helping to pass the time. I'm doing FP on Thursday next week. That should be an adventure.

Oh my! And here I thought planning a trip for 3 was challenging!

The trip is going to be a bit of a nightmare. We are flying down the Monday after Easter, and coming home on Friday. The whole week is 10/10 on the crowd calendars, and AP's are blacked out. We have one day at each park, including travel days, and they decided that they want to do a day at Universal too. Plus they are performing at Disney Springs on Tuesday.

I finally convinced the teachers to let me be in charge of the Disney planning, so I'm feeling a bit better about it now. The TA is not a Disney expert, so she is fine with my taking over too. :-) You should see the binder and planning spreadsheets. It has taken me hours.

If it's any consolation, I'm doing the same.

Not sure why they picked Easter break for it .... but my son, 15, will be doing the same band thing!

Only bonus is that when we decided to go, a while back, there were still 'some' deals ... and then we saw the darned Dark Side races the following weekend and said what the heck .... while we're there .... just extend a couple of nights and give Disney more money!

So on a year when we were only planning on W&D ... we're in for Princess, Star Wars, W&D and then Dopey.

If you call Disney, they can and will help you with FP for that large of a group. We always travel with a large group (my parents, my sisters and their husbands, and the 11 of us - I think our smallest group was 21) and I do all the planning. One year, before FP+ but when sit down meals were included in value free dining, there were 50+ of us with family friends that joined us. I did all the ADRs. It was a bit of a nightmare, but Disney was great with making it happen.
