WDW and DL Pirates to change Redhead scene

It's a good change, in my opinion. I'll leave it at that.

I doubt anyone but the most observant Disney fans will notice anyway, but doing the right thing should never be about getting kudos.
Also the new scene doesn't look terrible, it looks like they're just rearranging the AA's and changing dialogue/setting

Sorry I am coming in late to the party, and I haven't read the whole thread. However, a woman was heavily involved in the design of POTC. I think getting rid of auctioning the women is just asinine:sad2: They're pirates. They're rude, crude, and socially unacceptable. I personally find the chili dog burp in Stitch much more offensive, or the fact that most of the princesses have to have a knight in shining armor:rolleyes: I don't see them doing away with that anytime soon.

Prostitution, though illegal, when depicted in the pirates movies is a victimless crime. Everybody profits. And there is no doubt violence in those movies. I haven't seen them all, but I would not at all be surprise at a scene where our hero pirates are dunking folks in wells to get information.

However, these same violent pirates would not be portrayed in the movies selling women. That would be a step too far. I think they are just trying to allign the ride with the film franchise.
Are we just finding rationales now for why something does or does not qualify as being as bad as something else?

And as far as victimless..IDK can't you make a case where that was something they basically were forced into with their lot in life-as in it was the best option available to them.

They have brought certain elements from the ride into the movies (even exact scenes like the dog with the keys and the jail cell scene) and they have brought elements from the movies to the ride (like Jack and other things) but I really think you need to take a good long look at the Pirates movies.

I really doubt they are trying to align the ride with the franchise in the sense that you are thinking (unless you want to see severed heads in a basket visible for all to see or for people to be hung in front of your eyes but being held up by a sword at your feet for example or women labeled witches for knowing science). IDK there has been mistreatment of women for sure but really don't feel like going and in-depth looking at each movie now to find examples.

there is a distinct difference between a connection and actually showing the scene. Last time I checked there was not a slave auction in Splash Mountain, or even actual depictions of slavery in the ride.

So showing an animal about to be taken away to be lynched is okay, but a historical reference to pirates selling a woman at auction is dreadfully wrong? Neither is right, no, but you can't say get rid of one while diluting the horrible past of the other. I mean, POTC is still shown in theatres while Disney won't even release Song of South on video Stateside anymore.

Are you kidding? You're condemning the wench scene in the POTC ride, yet okay with a film showing prostitution as a "victimless" crime? Are you not aware of the percentage of prostitutes who are trafficked and exploited by violent men? Or the number of women who get led into the business directly after a childhood of sexual abuse? If you take the ride that seriously, you need to take the film that seriously, too, and condemn it, as well.

This isn't some historical attraction and it isn't an attraction educating people about the horrors of sex trafficking so it never happens again; the attraction makes jokes at sex trafficking and it's not something to laught at. Women are still today being sold as sex slaves at an alarming rates. About half are children. How many have taken your children on this ride and explained that fact to them? this isn't a ignore the history situation and it will happen again because most people ignore the fact that slavery still occurs today. I think the scene is insensitive and should be removed. If Disney wanted to make an attraction about the evils of sex trafficking I'd be all for it, but to make it a joke in an attraction is an outdated idea. And this is nothing like the pirates carrying guns or drinking. both of which are legal activities for adults to engage in.

When I am at Disney with my children, we are there to escape from the real world and are there to have FUN. I am not interested in giving my children a history lesson about the POC ride. My children and myself know whatever we see on the rides are not real, they are "RIDES". It's like saying we can't go on haunted mansion because it's "real".

I made that comment because someone said in order to stop history from repeating itself we need to learn about history. I was merely pointing out that in order to learn from our past mistakes there needs to be a discussion not simply laughing at it in a ride. Also the fact is it isn't even a history it's a current event discussion. You don't want to teach your kids about sex trafficking fine but don't act like it being on a ride then is going to stop it from happening in the future. (Not saying you said this it was a comment someone else made)

What about Gaston's Tavern? He's definitely a misogynist. Are we really going to get rid of everything in the park that's considered remotely offensive? There goes Splash Mountain, and apparently Tiki Room, because it's supposedly racist:rolleyes:

There is nothing racist in splash mountain. Is it based off a racist movie? Yes, but currently there is nothing racist in it. And Gaston maybe a misogynist but that is not nearly on the same level as selling people. People are free to think whatever they want about women, they aren't allowed to sell them as slaves.

On Splash...you may be suprised as what people have said about it on the Boards...

Gaston part...yeah I could say some things about that too. Shoot he captures Belle's father and wants to send him to an an insane asylum (and convinces the whole town too) in order to blackmail Belle into marrying him...but sure ok we're ok with blackmailing someone into marrying them.

But again it seems like we're making rationales why something isn't as bad as something else.

Better start making a list of all the ride elements that have to go .... might have half a park before we know it.

(1) MK is fantasy, theme park, no reality [main reason I would like HoP to to to Epcot] (2) we can not erase the past, if we keep doing that we have nothing to learn from (3) it can be looked at as a teaching tool for children rather than shield them which in itself can lead to repeats (4) how many Halloween costumes are totally inappropriate.

Life is serious enough .... if a place is somewhere you can't enjoy ... don't go. I've gotten old enough I just say no to things and people I won't enjoy, life is just too short. Fully believe folks should stand up for what they believe in, and if your company, friends etc don't support your beliefs ... move on. And honestly we have much bigger problems right now than some AA movie set.

That said, as long as they do a good scene, I don't care. But if it stayed, I don't care.

Totally agree with you. They might as well replace the cannons with Nerf guns and have the pirates drinking Kool-aid!
