I love credit cards so much!

IMHO no.... What is most valuable to you? $500 towards travel in the next 12 months + or 80,000 Marriott points (idk if that's the best offer out there) and Marriott Elite Status? If your answer is Arrival+ I see no reason to keep that "5" spot open for a Chase card. (FWIW reports in the comments on that DoC link are Barclaycard is cracking down on people who are getting lots of cards and many are getting denied. One person said they were told 6+ cards opened in past 24 months will now lead to denial. So, it may not be one you can pick up easily in the future either.)

it def varies on how u want to play the game. I let my (4/24 or 5/24) be an SPG card. def dont regret it at all since i dont really spend my points at all. i have 1 dropped off this month so i may go for a marriott. haha.
5/24 is only temporary! :P

Also, speaking of fraud alerts, Discover also has fraud alerts detection for free!

Also, anyone know if you can use Mastercard with plastiq? I know Visa has cracked down.

You might want to look into recent DPs on using the CIP to pay your mortgage via Plastiq. I've seen a lot of recent DPs that say, if you can get the mortgage payment to go through, it codes as 3x UR.

But if you're going to use your mortgage payment to meet minimum spend on a new MasterCard, and get a lower fee from Plastiq's current promotion, that's probably a better deal.

Chase's program is called Credit Journey and Capitol One's is called CreditWise. It is the same program that allows me to check my score. They both send alerts if there are changes to my report. Here is what Capital One sent this afternoon:

"Great news! No big changes to your TransUnion® credit report. There’s nothing new going on this month, but when events we monitor affect your TransUnion credit report—like credit inquiries, opened accounts or delinquencies—CreditWise® from Capital One® will let you know."
They all monitor TransUnion only and administered by TransUnion (at least in Chase's case) so they seem incomplete.

I guess in my case, I pay $10 a month to my employer for a legal insurance plan and it includes credit monitoring for all 3 bureaus, so I don't really worry. So if you are concerned with tracking all 3 bureaus, then I would look into a credit monitoring service.

That was my thinking. Maybe get the Barclay card for both dh & I and use it to pay our mortgage to help get 6k spent in 90 days. But it's good to know that the CIP is coding as 3x. If I decide against the Barclay, I'll definitely look into that.

I am excited and just wanted to share with you all and thank you. Delta is having a flash sale on flights to Hawaii and Alaska. I just booked a nonstop to Maui for only 35,000 miles each. I had the miles on DH's card because of getting the SPG earlier this year. Now to find a room! I have two free nights with Hyatt and then thinking maybe switch resorts and use my UR points. It will be a fun unexpected way to spend our 14th Anniversary. So thank you all.

The SPG is another card I would really like to have and I would not mind letting it be my 5/24 but I'm waiting on a better bonus.

This is all new to me. The extent of it I mean. We've gotten plenty of free flights, and sign up bonuses, but had no idea there was so much else out there! How did you get started? Are there websites to check to learn the ins and outs? I don't think I could ever achieve your expertise, but I would very much like to improve my knowledge.

Also, I was wondering if most people pay off their many credit cards each month? If not, that would negate much of the gain I would suppose. We only have a couple of credit cards by choice and use them very specifically and pay them off each month. We are debt free including no mortgage and tend to pay cash for everything. HOWEVER....we would be disciplined enough to work the "hacking" i we understood it more clearly.

This has been quite an eye opener!

@disneychic2 - Yes, I'd say every successful travel hacker pays their credit card bills in full every month. I see you are just getting started reading through this thread. If you read it all, you will come to find that I've been able to have some pretty amazing travel experiences thanks to this hobby and even done some ridiculous things just because I could, thanks to this hobby. None the less, I have barely scratched the surface of what is possible and still consider myself a novice compared to the bloggers I follow. So if I can do this, anyone can.

You are correct, paying interest would negate the value of your miles and points. We are also debt free, mortgage is paid. I never pay cash for anything if I can help it. I get nothing in return for using cash. Debit cards are far more dangerous to use than credit cards if one's info is compromised, so those are out of the question for me too.

I have over 30 credit cards. Most sit in a drawer. Many are too old to close. The rest, I keep for a particular benefit but don't spend anymore than needed to keep them active. This amounts to buying something once a year. I keep about 5-7 in my wallet for specific reasons and actually use those for spending.

There are plenty of bloggers and most have a beginner section. Million Mile Secrets, The Points Guy, Frequent Miler,
One Mile at a Time, Mile Value and many others.

Ask questions here on this thread. Everyone here is friendly and helpful. You will not find that on other forums. The game is better if you can do it with 2 players. DH and I each get the same card, our own accounts, not as authorized users so we get double the bonus. This is why and how we can easily maintain over 2 million points and miles.

Get your Chase cards that are subject to 5/24 first. This may not make sense right now but it will later and you will be glad you did :-) Set a travel goal and then get the points and miles you need to reach it. Figure out what is important to you when it comes to this hobby and know that your priorities may be very different than others in the hobby and that is ok.

Hope this helps!

So, I've been thinking that once I'm back under 5/24, I'd re-apply for the CSP, get the sweet sign-up, and have a way to transfer all the UR points I earn with Freedom and Freedom Unlimited to travel partners.

But, newbie that I am to this game, I just discovered the Capital One Venture card last night. That...seems...like a really good card for me. 40,000 mile sign-up bonus, flexible and only $59 annual fee (waived first year). Oh, and 2X miles for every purchase.

And not subject to 5/24, so I shouldn't have to wait as long to get it (though I've got some min spends to knock out before I'd consider it, of course).

Am I missing something?? This card seems kind of superior to CSP. AND it's metal! :)

Yes that's what I meant. A credit freeze would effectively stop my travel hacking hobby.

Nah, just plan ahead to what you want to apply for. Call to lift, apply, re-freeze. It's no big for me because I obsess and plan out my apps anyway. I probably over analyze my rewards too much!

Yes, I would say pretty much everyone here pays off cc monthly as if paying cash. No benefit to points if you're paying interest. There are a number of websites and blogs which many here follow like Doctor of Credit, The Points Guy, Frequent Miler, and Mommy Points. Plus lots of others

Thank you!! I will check them out!

i started reading reddit's /r/churning. i learned most from there. They are great for reading but only ask questions in the daily discussion. I think most posters here learned it here. Most of them are all pros now.
i started about 2 years ago September with the CSP...
only cards u dont really need to pay off are those with 0% APY cards. You still need to pay minimum. but there isnt much reason to keep the balance if you have the funds to pay for it.
There is also a lot of information that goes into the grey area as well. You gotta find it though... :]

Thank you so much! I have a lot to learn, but anxious to get started!

I absolutely pay it off every month. I would suggest starting slow, do one card and see how it goes for you. You can pay your credit card off before the statement even post if you want. I was so scared when I had my first credit card in college that I would pay off any charges on the day they posted :) Now, I use autopay to pay my statement balances on the due dates and stay very organized making sure there is enough money in my bank account to cover all of them. I suspect you'll find this is up your alley but unnerving. Financial self-discipline is the NUMBER ONE rule in this game, if you have that- come play!

I can't wait to get started! We are leaving in five days for Disney, so I don't have time to really delve into it, but I will hit it hard when we get back! Thanks for the tips!!!
