the picky kid and his foodie mom (with tiny tummy) ride again... NEW! 3/21 CP PPO, CHH & WCC

Day 2: Epcot
PPO Breakfast at Garden Grill

Well I'm supposed to be unloading and reloading the dishwasher but instead I'm here continuing my dining review. Dishes and Laundry are my life sometimes, and right now I'd rather be at Disney!

So to start off our first full park day at Epcot, I booked a PPO at Garden Grill for 8am. We left the room right at 7:15 so I figured it might be less hassle to go through bag check at the resort and take the resort monorail to TTC than go through bag check at TTC... but what I started to learn the hard way is that bag check will mean you JUST MISS every monorail that you see... so we ended up having to wait for the next one, then it was delayed several times, then we transferred monorails at TTC and JUST MISSED the Epcot monorail and waited for the next one, then got to bag check right as a tram arrived so it took us the full 45 minutes to get to garden grill. I was starting to get a little antsy as I hate being late, but it worked out fine.

I requested a table on the bottom level and got it no problem. We got a large booth actually as there were maybe 10-12 families seated total the entire time we were there?

Anyway obligatory hidden mickey table setting:

20180223_084504.jpg

I won't lie. I LOVE IT.

We were seated and the waiter was right there with fruit and cinnamon bun bake and to take the drink order, followed quickly by the big cheese himself, Mickey Mouse! Kiddo decided not to bother with autographs this time so it was kind of nice to just interact. Mickey did not feel rushed AT ALL like he does sometimes and stood there and listen to the kid chatter away, posed for selfies, and it was just generally pleasant and a great way to start off our morning. One thing I noticed during the breakfasts we did is that the characters no longer have individual handlers so we missed a lot of pictures together because no one was around to take them, especially in PPO time when the restaurant is more than half empty... so I have a lot of selfies that don't look so hot since their heads are so big.

BUT onto the food.

As I said, first came out the cinnamon bun bake and the fruit.

20180223_081103.jpg

The cinnamon bun bake had tons of icing on top and the kid kept requesting more and more servings of this because he was starving. I tried a tiny little piece and some fruit, my plate:

20180223_081319.jpg

The fruit was not as good as last time but since I couldn't eat nearly as much as last time, I was able to pick out just the best parts and what I had was good... but you can probably see from the above picture, most of the strawberries are questionable.

The sticky bun was as eh for me as last time. I guess it's just not my thing.

Then he brought the drinks. I forgot to ask for just like 1/4 glass of POG juice but I had to have some... he brought me a very full glass and I had a couple of sips. There is probably nothing worse for a bariatric patient than juice, except maybe milk shakes. Anything high in sugar that goes down in large volume without stopping is generally a nono.

20161207_103828.jpg

I really wanted to drink more or get it in a to go cup but as I said, that calorie bomb in liquid form is the last thing I need. Also I can't drink and eat at the same time so I would have had to hold it for a good half hour after breakfast.

Then the skillet came out, which is what I was really waiting for (PROTEIN!) and I think I forgot to take a picture of the whole thing this time, but here is my plate:

20180223_082305.jpg

The scrambled eggs were cooked well and fluffy (not dried out but not runny) and the salsa is apparently back!!! This was not available when I went in 2016. I LOVED the salsa, it was nice and fresh and tomato-ey. The server warned it might be spicy for little ones but it was not spicy to me at all. That said my little one won't touch salsa with a 10 foot pole so it was no worry. I also had a few tater tots, which were crispy and like crack frankly... a couple of pieces of standard disney bacon, that was cooked just right and the ear off of a mickey waffle drenched in chocolate hazelnut sauce. Also I had half a sausage once I discovered they were on the platter too. I ate everything I dished out except a slice of bacon (that I gave to the kid), about half the eggs and a few pieces of fruit (which I had cut into smaller pieces.)

The kiddo of course had his 3 basic food groups:

20180223_082210.jpg

Carbs, chocolate and bacon. We ended up requesting more waffles and chocolate sauce for him even after he ate the 3rd one minus one ear. The waffles were hot and crispy, the chocolate sauce was delicious, and he ate his weight in bacon. He also got apple juice with his breakfast and the waiter correctly surmised he was a "cup with a lid" type of a kid.

The character interaction was EXCELLENT. Both Chip and Dale went completely gaga over his ears, Chip pantomiming all sorts of loving gestures and Dale trying to flick the mini Chip off, lol. Pluto was great too, giving lots of nose bumps and other affectionate gestures. I won't bore you with all of our character photos but I love the look of pure joy on the kid's face in this one.

20180223_081716.jpg

Anyway the Garden Grill PPO is 2 enthusiastic thumbs up. Yes it's a bit pricey for how much I can eat... It was $59.10 with 20% tip and AP discount, but our waiter was great about mentioning we could pay the bill early if we wanted to get a jump on Soarin' (he did NOT make it sound like he was rushing us at all but the table next to us kept asking about that) and I did and we were down at Soarin' at about 8:45.

For what it's worth, a 45 minute breakfast when there is no lag time for ordering or cooking food to order was pretty much just about right. We saw all the characters, they spent as much time with kiddo as he wanted and only left when he indicated he was done by sitting back down and we both ate plenty at a leisurely pace (my typical meal at home takes about 20 minutes to eat, after that I'm supposed to stop because if I sit at the table I can graze in another whole meal in that time). They did come around again but the kid was so busy shoveling waffles and bacon into his mouth that he just waved as they passed by.

The best part was they let us on Soarin' at about 8:50 and when we were done, the rope drop crowds hadn't arrived yet. "Do you want to stay on again?!" They didn't have to ask us twice! So we got to ride kiddo's favorite ride x2 in the top middle. He was THRILLED and it was an extra bit of pixie dust that got us ahead in our touring plans by about a half hour since I had allocated a half hour to ride Soarin' a second time.

Garden Grill was a huge hit for us, the food was great (if basic) and it was so low key with the restaurant half empty, awesome character interaction. Enthusiastic 2 thumbs up and not sure I could do Epcot any other way now! This is on the kid's "must do on next trip" list.

Great reviews! We're (my husband & I) are doing our first Garden Grill PPO on our upcoming trip. I always wanted to go, but kept hesitating, as I don't eat gluten for health reasons, and therefore, won't get to enjoy that huge cinnamon bun, which looks so amazing! My husband will thoroughly enjoy it, though. It seems like a lot of money when I can't eat all the offerings, but what the heck, it's just money, right? My husband loves breakfast, and Epcot doesn't have any other table service breakfast options other than Akershus, which we have no interest in doing. Your son is adorable!

they have allergy friendly muffins as a sub for the cinnamon roll bake and allergy friendly waffles (not just gluten but most common allergies), so you should be able to eat the full complement of foods, just a slight sub for the cinnamon roll bake (which honestly I didn't think was all that spectacular and I could just as easily live without it). The waffles are mostly a vehicle for chocolate sauce :) :) It will be way more food than you can consume but if you're really jonesing some kind of pastry you can have a gf option. Here's a great resource for gluten free dining at WDW:

Don't ask me how the heck I knew that :) I just did.

Thanks, I think he is pretty cute too. I think I'll keep him! My son has an aversion to face characters... he likes the big teddy bear ones but does not like the face ones. So anything with princesses won't happen (he claims it's not because they are princesses but I think it is, especially since he is "considering" the bon voyage breakfast on our next trip. Like it's up to him, lol... but there are some princes there too). So with that and the premium of the princess meals and his lack of interest, I doubt we'll ever do the castle or akershus. Which is fine.

Facebook reminded me 9 years ago TODAY we were eating at the castle with my baby. He fell asleep on me.

My DS10 doesn't go for face characters either. He told me they're "weird because it's just a normal person dressed up" and "they don't even look like the character". Geez kid, where's your sense of magic!? lol

Thanks for the info, Lisa! I saw that you said you weren't too impressed by the sticky bun, so that makes me feel better, lol! And yay for allergy free waffles & chocolate sauce!!! Your son is just as adorable as a baby!

Your son was an adorable baby who has grown into an adorable little boy. :)

We didn’t have a great experience at Garden Grill the one time we dined there. Well, I was the one who didn’t like it—the kids in the group loved the characters.

We were a big group and got seated at a regular table on the second level. It was so dreary and drab with a view only of other tables and a waitstaff station with dirty dishes and such. Then, the waitress disappeared for a long time with our check, and we missed Illuminations. I’m still not over it, and it was in 2008. LOL!

Great to read your review of Garden Grill! We also have it booked PPO the morning of our first full day and I'm hoping for a peaceful experience like you had. I'm afraid we were spoiled by quiet, empty restaurants on our last trip because of Hurricane Irma.

I'm glad the salsa is back, that makes the meal seem a little more "garden-y". I don't think I've eaten at that restaurant since back in the 80s when it was a "fancy" dinner and I thought it was so fabulous and upscale. I'm from a rural area and I think the fanciest restaurant I had been to at the time was Western Sizzlin, so Garden Grill was a huge step up for me. Lol.

Lisa, what a great start to your trip. I'm so glad to hear that mobile ordering worked out so well for you. We avoid counter service for largely the same reason, so maybe we'll actually give it a try again. And your food looked amazing!

Speaking of amazing, I'm so glad CG was a wonderful experience for you all again. I'm not really sure why it gets mixed reviews as it is consistently our favorite restaurant. We've had the same seat you all got before and it is fun to watch the kitchen. Especially for the kiddos. So thrilled to hear the filet lived up to the last one and the pork was even improved upon. Jason's been eating that for 20 years now too and this latest incarnation looks right up his alley.

Lol I think that's it for him too, the oversized teddy bears are just more soft and squishy for hugging and he's hugging the character, not a person he doesn't know (he is very cuddly with me but doesn't hug strangers).

Oh and thanks for the report on asking for a booth. We've been seated at table 2x now and my husband really wants to sit in a booth. I will ask!

My secret for seating requests to be met every time without a wait is to be there very early on in the seating, before the restaurant is full (preferably right at opening or a changeover to a different meal). In this case half the restaurant is below and half is above... they have booths that they can split into two smaller tables for two smaller parties (usually later in the day we sit at one of those but I think they sat us there because the restaurant was so empty) so definitely ask! I doubt it will add much to your wait!

I am not a huge sweets/baked goods person. They have to be eye rollingly good for me to bother, if that makes sense. I like them when amazing but anything short or amazing is not worth it to me (never has been, not just post surgery). For me to bother with a cinnamon roll it needs to be totally fresh, warm from the oven, ooey gooey etc. This was not like that... I mean it was not stale but it was not fresh from the oven. So I'd rather cheat on some deep fried tater tots, which is a lot more my speed (give me crunchy and salty over sweet any day). On my last trip I was meh on every dessert except the bread pudding so for me to have loved the first two sweets I tried is a bit surprising. I didn't even like those cream cheese wontons people go gaga for at Yak and Yeti. But in my opinion, it is not a cinnamon bun of the "eye rolling" variety and for me, I can live without it. I had to stop the kid after half of that pan.

Thanks, now facebook is showing me all photos from that trip when he was a baby and my heart is melting!

Friends of mine went for dinner and didn't care for it either... I met that couple through the DISboards, we had a GREAT group for first week of December 2016. It turned out that we had a lot of similar ADRs at similar times... and we pretty much were in agreement about the food at all of them. But we loved our garden grill breakfast then too, they did not love their Garden Grill dinner. Admittedly I am disinclined to do lunch/dinner as the menu does not appeal to me at all, but I'd give breakfast a try. Make it PPO, request a bottom level booth... you will not miss a thing and in fact you will get a jump on Soarin'. If you are inclined to try it again that is. I'm sure people love dinner there but honestly that kind of family style dinner menu never appealed to me... I prefer the larger variety of a buffet if I'm going to eat mediocre food. The one exception MIGHT be liberty tree tavern (of course it makes no sense for me to do it now with how much I can eat, but when I saw kiddo's platter I kind of wished I could do some damage on it, it all looked so good! and that didn't used to be my opinion over there either!) But I'm spoiling my own review now.

lol, I laugh sometimes when people give their restaurant experience pedigrees prefacing their opinion about the food at Disney like it makes their tastes so much better than everyone else. I have been to very fancy restaurants as well but I am not a fancy person. I just like good food and I don't think you have to be fancy to know good. I like a lot of the restaurants at WDW and much more often than not enjoy my meals there. Different people have different tastes.

The salsa was great, since I eat high protein/low carb on a regular basis I get sick of eggs. I generally have a protein shake for breakfast because I prefer them in the morning but if I go out or on the weekends I have eggs. So it was nice to have something to shake it up a bit with the salsa. I ended up eating that entire little container of salsa with the tiny bit of eggs I had! It was nice, somewhere between a regular more liquidy salsa and a pico with chunks of tomato and onion but not huge ones. It did not taste too raw (I had a salad this weekend with pico and the whole thing was too raw and strong for me, I know pico is supposed to be raw but if you let it sit in acid for a while it mellows that out). This was great with the eggs, I really enjoyed it! I might have to try to figure out how to duplicate it at home.

We did mobile ordering a few more times on the trip and it worked out great every time. I will post more details when I get to it, but I am not kidding about it being a complete and total game changer (until everyone starts doing it and the line for pickup is too long, but for now I will enjoy it).

Glad to see I am in good company! The latest incarnation was amazing, even left over. But the pork shank version of it was highly recommended by our waiter, when after the fact we shared our decades old love for that dish in its various incarnations... He said he thought nothing could top the tenderloin but the shank was out of this world. I'm glad he didn't tell me that before dinner because I would have been conflicted seriously, but I really wanted the classic so probably ultimately would have chosen the tenderloin. I'm sure the shank is delicious but I picture it as more of a mushy presentation and I wanted the "steak" texture of the tenderloin anyway. But maybe next time I'll try it. Or one of the other dishes on the menu. It is our major "must do" on our next trip again!

well, we are about to get hammered with our 3rd nor'easter, but this time with a lot of heavy, wet snow and high winds... not looking good for the cape and islands... so I'm going to travel back to Disney and add another review.

Day 2: Epcot Snacks

So one of the nice things about not eating to the point where you're not hungry until 6 hours later is that you can have some snacks. On our last trip we ate 2 huge meals a day and had no snacks. This time we ate usually 2 smaller meals a day and then had snacks and it rocked. We now have a growing snack list for our next trip.

So my kid LOVES popcorn. Like you would not believe. The kid eats a bag of skinny girl popcorn EVERY SINGLE DAY. Last trip he was sad that we were too stuffed always to try the flavored popcorn in Epcot... so we resolved to try it this time, and try it we did. Around noon he was hungry, so we found the cart and I bought a refillable bucket (which I ended up never refilling, lol, but I will bring it back next time... I have read they will refill old buckets even if they change the design... but it was still worth it because it had a lid and we ate this popcorn over 2 days and then used the bucket for desserts at the HEA dessert party!)

Anyway we got a mix of cheddar and sour cream and onion and then went inside I guess old innoventions? to sit and catch some A/C and eat our popcorn. Here it is after we ate enough to shake it up and bring some of the sour cream and onion to the top:

20180223_122807.jpg

So there has been much debate as well about WDW's change in popcorn and I've read that the flavored popcorn is "stale." It isn't stale at all but it isn't freshly popped either. There is no way to freshly pop popcorn and have it be so completely coated with cheddary and sour cream onioney yumminess.. that stuff only happens in one of those food factories you see on shows like "unwrapped" in big rotating drums that evenly coat every kernel with powdered dairy goodness. I really liked both of these flavors and I really liked how much flavor there was on the popcorn. But just know, I am the girl whose heart races and palms get sweaty and am filled with a feeling of elation when I find one of those doritos that has like 3x the cheesiness in the bag... and I will cut you if you try to steal it from me. I may not be much of a sweets person but powdered cheese on something crunchy really gets me going. The popcorn itself was about like any supermarket bagged popcorn so no not freshly popped but I would not call it stale either. We enjoyed it and ate about half before getting bored sitting there and putting the lid on and moving on to the world showcase.

Even though it was several days before F&G was about to start, apparently they do not make the magic happen overnight and there were quite a few topiaries out already. I just LOVE tigger and was able to ask someone to take our picture at the pooh topiaries in the UK:

20180223_134708.jpg

We were in the UK because we were on our way to France for our next snack item that we regrettably missed on our last trip: The Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich.

It was hot and sunny so the line was pretty long, but I've never been in this shop before... I loved all of the little details they put in it, like the milk bottle chandelier, and it made the line seem to move very quickly. I forget already what the seasonal flavor was but although I am not much of a sweets girl, I am a chocolate girl and I am an ice cream girl... so unsurprisingly, we got a chocolate one to share. Here it is:

20180223_140309 (1).jpg

I might have to stop saying I'm not really a dessert person because this thing was... AMAZING! It was small (only about 4" in diameter at most, much much much smaller than the Tamu Tamu ice cream cookie sandwich) and expensive ($4.69, I think only a dollar less than the huge cookie sandwich at Tamu Tamu) but it was nirvana. The cookies were perfect macaron consistency with that crispy top and the chewy inside and the ice cream was SO FUDGY DELICIOUS CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM OMG OMG OMG. I love chocolate ice cream but rarely is it as deeply darkly chocolate as this... I love dark chocolate and this was not overly sweet (the cookies were a bit sweeter than the ice cream). This was probably the best snack I have ever had in my life.

I won't lie... if I were not in the "golden weight loss period" and trying to get another 35 lbs off, I would have been right back on that line buying 2 more of these... one for me and one for the kid... because I would NOT make the mistake of sharing a second time. It was that good. I did eat my full half though (usually I just eat 2-3 bites at most) and next time I am getting my own. And there will be a next time. Maybe even several next times. Maybe even on the same trip. If you love chocolate and you love ice cream you have to try this. Seriously. I'm not even joking.

Anyway, as it turns out, they also had the beauty and the beast topiaries up too.. and there was a line of people waiting to take a picture with it. I wanted to take a picture with it so I turned around and asked the nice older man behind me if he'd take our picture. "Sure" he said, and took my phone and fiddled uncomfortably with it before hitting a few buttons and handing it back to me. As we're walking away I realize not only had he not taken our photo but he had actually deleted about 3 photos I had before it!!! As it turned out they were pictures of the ice cream macaron sandwich and I still had the first one I took, so it was fine but HOLY CRAP. Moral of the story, never ask someone who looks like they are the type to call their grandchildren asking them how to do something on the computer to take a picture with your cell phone. You are seriously living on the edge if you do.

We got back on the line and I found this woman who had a big expensive looking iphone (I use a samsung so I don't know the models, lol) and asked her to take our picture and we got a few with no casualties:

and a bonus to show what a truly beautiful day it was, France from the approach... I used to live in DC and am used to cherry blossoms in bloom in april... I guess in florida they bloom in February!

I will be back to France to explore her other culinary delights!

Next up: Le Cellier.

That sounds so good! I think I may have to put that on my list :scratchin

I'm only caught up to page 2 but wanted to say hi and I'm here! I love the candid look at before/after meals and how much was left.

Satuli Canteen looks so good - I can't believe I still haven't tried it! Putting it somewhere useful in my brain. And oh man those fresh made cookie sandwiches are insanely good - I had one at one of the dinoland kiosks (I think) and while we did not get brownie-like cookies, we got to choose our ice cream flavor and it was DELISHBALLS!

can't wait to catch up! Yay!

Day 2 Dinner: Le Cellier

So I like to book meals at off times because restaurants are less busy, and we had a 4:30 Le Cellier booked. I had timed this perfectly with a 2:45 voices of Liberty, a 3pm showing of the American Adventure and then a leisurely walk back to Canada stopping in the shops to look around (including Japan and all of the pokemon stuff, the kid really enjoyed that I think but luckily didn't ask for anything!) and we got to Le Cellier right at around 4pm. I checked in at the podium and the waitress let me know they were running about 15 minutes behind... from ADR times (!!!) I was thinking holy cow, there is no one here and there is a 45 minute wait?!? But we're on vacation, so I did what any self respecting person on vacation would do... I got myself a cup of ice water settled in on a bench in the lobby and made my kid take a selfie.

20180223_160846.jpg

Anyway, I pulled out the kid's phone (my old S5, uses wifi only) for him and settled in for a long wait and then our table was called literally 30 seconds later. So I packed everything back up and we went to our table.

I have to preface the rest of the review by saying that Le Cellier is another old favorite of mine. We had a truly superb meal there on NYE 2000/2001 with a great waiter who suggested that we come back after fireworks for dessert and we did and had a lovely dessert and I had my first ever glass of ice wine. The truffle filet was my introduction to risotto and honestly, I still have dreams about that dish. But I haven't been back in a long time, I think since we took the kiddo the first time in 2009 and well before the whole "2 table service credit" thing. I've read all of the debates about it and its value and now will weigh in with my opinions.

First off... atmosphere. I know a lot of signature snobs talk about the terrible atmosphere here, but being a fan of the more heavily themed restaurants, I have always loved it here... and upon being brought to our table, I still loved it. The restaurant was mostly empty at shortly after 4pm so I got this shot of my kid with the room in the background.

20180223_161740.jpg

I love the cellar theming, the mirrors make it feel bigger than it is (to me)... love the rich wood paneling and the lights and the stained glass inserts in the carved wood paneling... I really just love eating here. The tables are a bit closer than you find in other signatures but I did not at any time feel like our neighbors were on top of us. Just my opinion of course, but I love the atmosphere in here as I always have and it's a nice, cool, dim break from the blinding sun and heat of the park.

I have also seen complaints about the wait staff not being "professional" but honestly, our waitress was great. She was attentive without being up my rear and was always there when I needed her and quick to deal with any issues (more on that later), which is a lot more than I can say for our experience at Narcoossees, a "true" signature.

Anyway I thought i might get a glass of ice wine but at the last minute I chickened out and just got water. I think the kid just drank water here too (which he did at most meals, and I appreciated not having to pay all that money for juice). We pretty much walk into most restaurants knowing what we're going to have already but I made a last minute addition to our plan. We hadn't planned to order appetizers but I noticed there was a $4 kids cheddar soup on the menu, so I asked for that along with our bread. The kid was confused, but I told him "watch and learn."

Here is the bread basket, with a pretzel bread stick, some kind of multigrain thing, and some kind of white roll. He couldn't wait for the soup to try the breadstick so he tried it with a little of the maple butter, claimed he could not taste the maple though:

VERY quickly the soup came and here it is.

From the adult description, because the kid description just says "cheddar soup"

Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup
Moosehead Beer and Nueske’s Applewood-smoked Bacon

It was a decent sized serving, this is what I would consider a typical "cup of soup" size container. It was not filled to the brim but you could easily pay $9 for a chowada this size here at home so $4 for the cheese soup seemed like a bargain, especially since the adult size was nearly 4x as much money (and did not appear to be anywhere near 4x the volume, although served in a prettier bowl.)

my child was perplexed but I broke off a piece of pretzel bread and dipped it in the soup and ate it and he followed suit. Now we tried this before at biergarten with their pretzel bread and cheese soup... but their cheese soup tasted very strongly of beer and their pretzel bread was not served warm and he was not a fan. But this cheese soup tastes like cheese and bacon ...two things he is VERY VERY ok with... and you couldn't really taste the beer on its own either, and he thought his mom was like, the smartest person on the planet right at this moment.

Just so you know, a $4 kids portion of soup is pretty much just right for dipping 2.5 pretzel breadsticks into it. I ate about half of one (I normally do not eat bread) and he ate 2. Our waitress was luckily around enough and attentive enough to bring more pretzel bread without us having to sit around and drum our fingers waiting for it. It was as good as I remembered and so worth the extra carbs.

For lunch since the kid (of course) wanted the filet and I ALSO wanted a filet and I did not see the need for 2 pricey entrees, we decided to share with an additional side.

Le Cellier Filet Mignon
AAA Canadian Tenderloin, Mushroom Risotto, Asparagus-Tomato Relish, Truffle-Butter Sauce

The first thing I did was cut into it and cut it in half. I had ordered it medium, as the kid likes it (I prefer medium rare but find Disney steaks tend to be a little under so medium works fine for both of us). Well, it was red and cold in the middle so that wasn't going to work. The kid started to get agitated remembering our miserable meal at Narcoossees in 2016, where his steak was purple and still mooing and then came back just barely rare and blackened on the otuside... but I calmed him the heck down and flagged down our waitress, who was actually around, and she took one look at my plate, apologized and said she'd get it fixed before I even had to tell her what was wrong. So right then and there it was more promising. I make light of it but anxiety often comes with spectrum disorders, and stuff like this can be hard for the kiddo to take in stride.

Since the kid won't eat any of those sides, I ordered a side of the Three-Cheese Macaroni & Cheese for him. No description. I was on the fence between that or the kids mac and cheese with drink and dessert but he didn't want the drink or dessert (had his eye on something off the adult menu) and he DOES like the more sophisticated mac and cheese so we got this:

20180223_163749.jpg

He really liked this mac and cheese.. I have read that the pasta is mushy and while I will say it was not al dente (I tried a piece... for the review of course) it was not mushy either. There was nothing that fancy or complex about the cheese sauce, and he enjoyed the crunchy contrast of the bread crumbs. He tucked into this while waiting for our steak to come back and to give him something to do besides fret over his anticipated filet mignon lunch being ruined.

When our steak came back, it was freshly replated with all new sides, though they had clearly cooked our steak more because it was still cut in half. The food runner waited while I cut into it again and confirmed it was right (it was) and our waitress followed up soon after to make sure everything was ok. And it was. Which is so different from the so-called "real" signature at Narcoossees where we couldn't get anyone's attention even though our bill was nearly 3x the size. So I would say that you can't make sweeping characterizations about service and you can get great (or poor) service anywhere and our service here was top notch, and it was ultimately good for the kiddo to know that getting something wrong the first time does not automatically equal disaster.

Anyway the steak was perfect this time and here is the kid's plate, the "larger half" of the steak plus about half of the mac and cheese:

He ate all of this but left the other half of the mac and cheese again (it was a large portion). It was a good piece of filet though not quite as good as CA Grill a very close second (per the kid, I did not eat the filet there).

I ate all of mine and about 2/3 of the risotto. Everything tasted ok but I have to say that it was kind of a pale comparison to the old dish. There was nothing bad about it, it just wasn't amazing. First of all, for $54, the amount of sides dished up are really quite skimpy. If a bariatric patient can nearly finish it, you're not giving people enough food for their money. There was barely 1/2 cup of risotto on that plate... I know that is a "standard serving" but for $5 more than the CA Grill filet I'd expect a bit more (and used to get more). Also, there were 4 stupid pieces of asparagus about 1 inch long... not even full stalks and not even the tops, just the ends/middles. How weird and subpar! and come to think of it, I think they forgot it when they replated it because I don't remember eating any. The truffle butter sauce, which used to be the best thing and the kid wanted to try, was plated UNDER the risotto, so basically you couldn't eat it with the steak because there was maybe a 1/8" ring of sauce extending past the risotto and the rest melted into the risotto. What a completely stupid way to plate. The old dish had the sauce poured on top. In retrospect I wish I had asked for more on the side, because what tiny bit I could taste was good, but the kid would not risk having his steak touch my risotto. The tomato "relish" was just chopped raw tomato and kind of looked like it came out of that "multi colored tomato" package at the supermarket... but I will say that the tomato was actually delicious (it is really out of season here) and a bite of steak with some risotto (and presumably truffle butter sauce underneath) and a bit of tomato was a really nice bite, with the acidity of the tomato balancing out the richness of the risotto. It was good but not AMAZING and not as good as before with lots of rich truffle butter sauce and earthy mushrooms and creamy risotto. In fact I'm not sure I could detect any of that lovely earthiness that truffle flavor imparts.

Since we shared the entree, we had room for dessert and the kid, who loves creme brulee, had pre-selected the:

Maple Crème Brûlée

If you haven't figured it out, I can be pretty particular and picky. I didn't much care for my creme brulee at our ill-fated Narcoossees meal because it was really more like a pudding than a creme brulee. It wasn't bad but not what I expected or was jonesing and I was quite grumpy by then.

This is a very very well executed, if pretty basic, creme brulee. I only had a couple of bites but the custard was the perfect texture, perfect firmness and not too eggy (I do not mind them eggy but the kid does not like eggs and does not like when they are eggy). The sugar crust was executed perfectly... not too thin and not too thick, with the perfect amount of snap when smacked with a spoon, and not a hint of either burned nor raw sugar... just nicely caramelized. It's a cute presentation but the cookie was nothing special and the kid and I do not care for white chocolate... it was kind of the waxy "candy melt" variety anyway. But the creme brulee itself was delicious. If you put it in front of me I would not have pegged it for maple though, but the kid told me he did taste the maple, and it's a very funny thing that he did and I didn't because women have more taste buds than men do (seriously this kid cracks me up).

We spent $88.21 on this meal with 10% AP Discount and 20% standard tip. It was very good but not so perfect and amazing that I'd put it on my list to go back to on the next trip. I'd say an 8 out of 10, but could have been knocked out of the park with some asparagus tips, more risotto and sauce on top instead of on the bottom. If you go here, ask for extra sauce on the side right from the beginning and cut your steak down the the middle to check doneness before eating. You won't be sorry you did either. Going here scratched my Le Cellier itch but we'll go somewhere else next time.

The chimichurri was AMAZING and now i'm sad they changed it to a boring vinaigrette but maybe it will be good also. I gave the kid some of the steak too
My DH got a bowl with the chimichurri sauce last May and LOVED it!
Glad you both enjoyed Satuli.

Double Chocolate-Chip Ice Cream Sandwich - hand-dipped vanilla ice cream with two chocolate-chip cookies $5.79
OMG why have I not seen this before?? This is right up my alley, I am so getting this later this month!

well, we are about to get hammered with our 3rd nor'easter, but this time with a lot of heavy, wet snow and high winds... not looking good for the cape and islands... so I'm going to travel back to Disney and add another review.
Yup, in fact I didn't even want to set the alarm to get the boys up for school because I'm 99% sure they'll have another snow day. They used their last one last Wed so if they are off tomorrow it'll shorten their Memorial weekend break, but sadly it doesn't look good

Your CG experience sounds and looks great. DH and I have only been there once and weren't impressed; I'd like to go back but he isn't in a rush to do so. Still, I think I may try to get there for our August trip.

That sounds so good! I think I may have to put that on my list :scratchin

you really need to. so many other ice cream flavors sounded good there too. ice cream is a weakness of mine.

Yay!

it is very good and something you feel good about after you eat it. It's not super indulgent if you know what I mean. I also think they have struck the perfect balance between interesting and accessible on the kid's menu as well.

ample hills will be happening next time, as will beaches and cream. Another two things we completely missed out on our last stay at the boardwalk! probably not on the same night. Glad you're here!

next on the qs/snack list at AK are the pulled pork cheese fries at flame tree!

honestly, I never knew that place was there. Kid wanted ice cream so I pulled up the app and started clicking on menus. It was sooooooo good!

we're supposed to get heavy, wet snow and high winds which makes power outages likely. I have everything charging. I have a tremendous amount of anxiety about severe weather so keeping myself busy here and doing some stuff around the house. Just cleaned the cat box and took out all the trash so I'm not stuck in a house with anything stinky!

It's so funny how different people have such different experiences. Could be a combo of waiter/what you ordered/how the kitchen is doing that night. Like us with Narcoossees, your reviews make me want to go back but I'm not ready to yet! I THINK we are going to do CA Grill and Flying Fish as our 2nd signature on our next trip, since the kid has decided our pattern is to do 2 signatures (we did CA Grill and Narcoossees last time and CA Grill and Le Cellier this time, lol). I haven't been since the remodel and it looks beautiful and we are spending at least half of our trip at the boardwalk so I think that sounds like a capital idea!

I may not be much of a sweets person but powdered cheese on something crunchy really gets me going.

I think you may be my spirit animal :rotfl:

Loving your reviews! That is a really great picture of the two of you by the Beauty & the Beast topiaries :)
