Bus Accident Involving High School Band on Way Home from WDW

This is going to sound horrible, but I was just the slightest bit relieved to learn the person dead was the bus driver.

At least that's what I think this line means:
Houston-based First Class Tours confirmed it was the vehicle's operator.

It's horribly tragic. But imagine if it was a student that died.

Because kids lives have more value than adults?

You are right, that is horrible to say. This driver had people in his life that cared about him too. All lives are equally valuable.
.

Because kids lives have more value than adults?

Because I'm a parent of two band students, both of whom have gone on bus trips away from home. In fact, my daughter's college band traveled to St. Pete from Philadelphia by buses, and one of them got in an accident on the way phone, 4 days before Christmas.

But your kids weren't on THIS bus. So why would you feel relieved that the driver was killed?
Imagine, if you can, being the parents of one of the students on that bus. You sent your child on this trip with their friends. Then you hear there's an accident and somebody died.

How sad would you be if it was your child? One of their friends? The band director? The bus driver? Any of them dying is sad. The bus driver had family, I'm sure. I'm looking at this article from the point of view of a band parent, because that's what I've been for the past 10 years.

And, as I said, I do feel horrible reacting that way.

Really, WTH?, the loss of life is tragic and equally difficult for those who loved them regardless. If you are putting value on it, a family and possibly children just lost their parent and bread winner.

It’s a tragedy, period!

I get what she is saying too. With kids that used to travel all over the country on a charter bus, I understand exactly what she is saying.

She said she felt bad about her reaction and I have to admit that I had the same one and felt bad about it too.

It’s not that anyone thinks the man’s life wasn’t valuable or his family will miss him less or grieve for him less. It’s just a normal reaction of “whew. The kids are ok”. It’s brief usually when there is a tragic loss of life, but it’s still there.

So no one has ever thought in a tragedy "at least the kids made it out ok." or "at least the kids didn't suffer." No one ever? I get what @FlightlessDuck is trying to say. I don't think she's saying "good I'm glad the bus driver died."
In all honesty no, I've never thought that. Doesn't matter if you are 1 year old or 99 years old they all mean the same to me.

Thank you both for the back up.

Minor correction: HE.

I was wondering if you were going to make the minor correction.

I realized what you meant when you first posted. When I read the link and saw one fatality then read it was the driver and not a student, I was a bit relieved too.

I'm just being honest.

Looks like a company called First Class Tours was the operator and they've had 4 crashes in the last 2 years. That's pretty unacceptable.
