Hollywood Studios - Temporay Bus Depot - Looooong walk

I had read reports here in that previous thread about the walk being "close to 20 minutes even for a relatively fast walker." When I was there the first week in September it did not seem all that long from my bus drop off to the gate and I figured that maybe the buses were pulling up as close as possible for drop off but that my walk back would be longer. So I timed it. It was very hot so I walked at a strolling pace and I stopped twice to take photos of the gondola station and it took my 7 minutes to get to the POR stop. Not bad at all.

I think the 20 minute discussion was the walk from HS to Epcot, which goes past the new bus stops?

It's all a matter of opinion I suppose. I walk 3 miles a day for exercise. The walk from the bus to the entrance is nothing to me.

It is definitely a mental thing. After all most of us walk ALL day in the parks. I don't think it is really the walk more so then the fact that there is no shade, so on hot sunny days it will seem worse.

I think they are just redoing them.
No, the new bus depot is under construction next to the temporary one. It will have continuous shelters like all the other parks, instead of the tiny individual ones at the old stops.

I don't know what will be where the old stops were, but a recent aerial photo showed a portion had been freshly paved, as if for parking.

I am short, only 5’2, so I don’t take
long strides. I checked the step count on our way to bus stop number 8, second farthest stop in the outside row. I think it was about 460 steps from just past the flag pole area to the bus stop. Once we knew where we were going, it wasn’t too bad.

I still think the walk out of Epcot at the end of night is the worst and Animal Kingdom is not much better. The walk at DHS is definitely hot because there is no shade but I always find the walk to the AK buses to be pretty hot and miserable. The only advantage there is that they do have all that shade once you finally get to the stops where the new DHS location does not.
I did the same, for the same reason.
The thread about the 20 min walk for a seasoned runner
So this "55 yo, 50 lb overweight, most certainly not a seasoned runner" timed the walk.
I started the Actvitity log on my watch as I exited the turnstiles. I made it to the bus stop in 8 min (timed the walk to AKL, my next resort stay)
Went on to time the walk to BWI.
We made the original walking path in 12 min (distance was .5 mile)
Made the boat dock at BWI in 20 min. (distance .9 miles)
We can make Epcot 5 min from there.
We did the walk twice, on a rather cloudy day when it had rained earlier so it wasn't blazing hot but it was humid and on a day when it was very blazing hot. I'd still opt to do that walk over standing in the very long boat lines. They were all long and you'd end up taking at least 2 boat loads most of the time

We timed it on 9/6 and it was 8 minutes. This was at about 2pm and it was hotter than Hades. We used our umbrellas for shade and that helped.

Given the fact that Uber etc can’t get much closer than the buses, what would be the fastest non-walking way to leave HS? We are several health issues in our group, and we may need to leave quickly. We will not have a car. A 5-8 minute walk to the bus or taxi rank may not be feasible.

Uber/Lyft is quite a bit closer than the bus

I did GPS tracks today. Here are the walking distances from the turnstiles:
Code:
               Feet Miles
Tram 1441 0.272916667
Uber 1608 0.304545455
Bus Stop #12 1468 0.278030303
Bus Stop #1 2148 0.406818182
So the tram pickup and the closest bus stop are virtually the same distance. I measured to where the middle car of the tram loads. I think the tram drops off before turning around, which is slightly closer.

The Uber pickup is 140 feet further than the nearest bus stop, but 540 feet closer than the furthest bus stop. I think Uber may be able to drop off closer, near the tram pick-up. The taxi stand is between the tram pickup & the Uber pickup, and I also saw a Minnie Van looking for a rider there.

It's long and it's hot, but it isn't that bad of a walk at all. I already do miles upon miles per day at Disney Parks; what's an extra 1/4 mile or so? And by the time you're done taking several buses to transfer to an Epcot Area resort to take the boat (unless you're staying at one), what have you gained other than a minute reduction in steps? Is it worth taking a bus from your resort to DS to the Epcot Resort to HS? Not to mention all the walking you'd have to do from the DS drop off to the Epcot Resort Bus Stop.

I measured in Google Earth using Path Measure and it's actually a very slightly longer walk from where buses drop off at Epcot to Bag Check.

From the bus stop for OKW to Bag Check at HS was 0.21 or 0.23 miles. From where the bus drops off at Epcot to Bag Check was 0.24 miles. The usual Pop bus stop is about 0.24 miles as well.

It's 0.25 miles from the bus drop off to the farthest stop in the Bus Loop for DS, and 0.21 miles from drop-off point to the farthest stop in the middle of the bus loops at DS.

The path from The Little Mermaid Room Building to the Bus Stops at AoA is 0.34 miles.

If walking and being in the sun and heat are things you're trying to avoid (and that's the Royal You, not singling any one person out here), then a Disney Parks vacation in Florida (or SoCal, for that matter) is probably not a great idea.

If it's a medical issue, there are courtesy wheelchairs available and it's entirely probable that Disney CMs would work to accommodate your needs. (Especially in an emergency situation.)
