Dining Wars: Drinking's Edge - An August 2018 Dining Report - Updated 2/18: Completed

Episode XIII: Attack of the Food Thief

We were all moving a little slowly the next morning and enjoyed some time in the room before heading to the parks.. I had my mind set on the School Bread I’d picked up the day before, but someone else had other plans for it.

When we finally left the room it was clear the heat of the week was getting to us as Casey walked out without shoes on and I hadn’t rubbed the lotion into my legs. Thankfully Jason realized both of these things before we got too far from the room. :scared1:

Shoes on and lotion rubbed in we made our way via boat to MGM as we had a date with a ride with the best acronym ever, if only we could use it.

I was pretty disappointed in this one as it really didn’t do much and I expected it to last much longer than it actually did. I guess you could say it sucked AS2.

Since only one of us had breakfast Jason and I decided to pop into Woodys Lunchbox to try the Chocolate Hazelnut Lunch Box Tart.
And in typical School Bread form ….

I was able to get a bite or two and I was surprised at how good it was. The “tart” had a great pie crust like taste and the hazelnut filling was distinctly nutella like. The bacon added a nice crunch, but sadly no actual flavor to the mix.

From there we hung out with a pig and a frog and flew through the skies with a bunch of even stranger looking animals, before it was time to eat again!

I’d booked a day of reservation at Jason’s favorite SciFi. I’m much more of a 50’s girl, but to get him there is more trouble than its worth.

To drink I got a Napa Smith Red Ale. I have no idea why I ordered this (maybe to ensure Casey wouldn't drink it) as it was a hoppy and malty beer that wasn’t my style at all.

This of course did not preclude me from drinking it all…..And then ordering a Bud Light.

Jason also got a Napa Smith Beer, the Hopageddon Imperial IPA.

And the best order of the bunch was Casey who got their special Pineapple Shake.

This taste like a really thick dole whip and was delicious. It just needed a wee bit of rum.

Casey decided she just wanted to “share” with me, but I also ordered her some Chicken Noodle Soup to ensure I actually got to eat.

To share we went with something off the appetizer menu: The Sci Fi Appetizer Sampler with Boneless Buffalo Tenders, Shrimp and Crab Fondue, House-made Tortilla Chips, and Fried Dill Pickles served with Horseradish and Blue Cheese Dipping Sauces

The buffalo tenders were nice and spicy, but otherwise unremarkable. But I love anything buffalo so I was a happy girl. I was a bit skeptical about the seafood fondue, but it had a great cheese flavor with just a hint of crab and shrimp so it wasn’t overwhelming. My favorite though was the fried pickle, because when you take an already perfect food and fry it nothing but good things can happen.

Speaking of good things Jason got the Smoked Prime Rib Sandwich which is Pastrami-style Smoked Prime Rib served on grilled marble rye bread with grain mustard coleslaw, caramelized onions and Swiss cheese.

This was very much like a Rueben but so much better. The prime rib certainly added a complexity you don’t usually get from corned beef and the mustard slaw added both tartness and acidity that really made it great. Jason proclaimed this the best sandwich he’s ever had at SciFi which guarantees it will be 2050 before I get back to 50’s.

I know SciFi doesn’t get a ton of love, but we always enjoy our experiences here and while the food will never blow you away it will at least transport you to another decade or planet.

After lunch we had some time to kill before our FP for Toy Story Mania and with so little to do in the park we decided to wait in line so we could ride twice.

This was our first time experiencing the queue and even Casey enjoyed experiencing it.

When we exited it was time for our FP, but unfortunately it was pouring!!!! We figured it wouldn’t be too far to get to the entrance and we could avoid getting too wet.

We were wrong.

After a second spin through Andy’s room and now soaked we decided to head out. We waited for a boat for over 20 minutes before deciding to walk. And as we walked through the war zone that is the bus stop we saw this little gem.

Now why put this at the bus stop and not at the boat launch is beyond me. And in another case of Murphy’s law two boats passed us as we walked back!

Up next, an amazing birthday surprise.

I agree with the adding rum part. We are getting it!!! Even if we have to make it ourselves.

We should also get this!

This made me LOL!!!!

Sci-Fi is always a favorite of ours, love the atmosphere in there. The sandwich looks so yummy! We always share a burger but this looks so good and I love a Reuben. We are passing on this in January and doing 50’s PT I thought my sister would like it since she was born on the 50’s!

I'm really enjoying your report! We're all adventurous eaters ( including the 7 and 10 year olds), and this summer is the first time we get to make our own dining reservations at Disney without worrying about less adventurous palates, so I'm taking notes to follow in your footsteps. Any advice on the best place to get really good ramen, gyoza or Indian? I'm guessing Morimoto for the first two? They are my kids' favorites.

I know SciFi doesn’t get a ton of love, but we always enjoy our experiences here and while the food will never blow you away it will at least transport you to another decade or planet.
You know, not every meal needs to be AMAZING! I loved SciFi when we went. It is fun. And the food is good. I am looking forward to going back in Feb.

I love her face! Perfect.

Up next, an amazing birthday surprise.
Oooohhh!!! I need some amazing birthday surpise ideas!

Oooh your sci-fi food looks good! Glad you managed to eat some :rotfl:Don't knock it though as I'd love to have a food thief child given that my youngest is quite possibly the fussiest child on the planet! He is so good in every other way but food just doesn't do it for him:eek: How is it possible he belongs to me:confused3:rotfl: I'd totally be with you on adding a little something extra to that shake!
Laughed when I saw your comment about using (or not) acronyms for certain rides and yeah I was a wee bit disappointed by alien ss :(
At the very least they could have made it a bit longer but on the upside we loved slinky dog! So much fun!!
Cant wait to hear all about the birthday surprises :)

Aye and what is it with putting signs telling you vital info to save tired feet in the wrong blimin place! Drive a body to drink (or at least it would if we weren't already:drinking1).

Can't remember if I've said it already but if not Happy New Year to you and yours :thumbsup2

Thankfully Jason realized both of these things before we got too far from the room. :scared1:
Phew! Crisis averted. :thumbsup2 One of the major disadvantages with solo travel... you walk out without shoes and without lotion rubbed in and your only clue is the points and laughs from random strangers... :sad2:

date with a ride with the best acronym ever, if only we could use it.
I KNOW!!!!!! :faint:

I guess you could say it sucked AS2.
:rotfl2:

My favorite though was the fried pickle, because when you take an already perfect food and fry it nothing but good things can happen.
This same rule applies to so many of my favorite foods...

I know SciFi doesn’t get a ton of love, but we always enjoy our experiences here and while the food will never blow you away it will at least transport you to another decade or planet.
This is how I feel about SciFi too - I always really enjoy it. And those milkshakes? Yeah... those alone are worth the trip in my book ::yes::

We figured it wouldn’t be too far to get to the entrance and we could avoid getting too wet.
I see that worked well :p

That Prime Rib sandwich was one of the best things I ate on our August trip. It's not on the menu anymore though.

I think I agree Sci Fi > 50's Primetime even though I haven't been to 50's PT since 1990!

Oh my gosh, your description of your food at Sci Fi has my stomach growling!!! We ate at Texas Roadhouse last night with my son and his family, and they ordered the fried pickles appetizer. I had my first taste of these wonderful concoctions! Yummy!

LOVED your review of Sci-Fi!! We have never ever eaten there on our 5 trips to the World, but I'm happy to say that I've booked DH and I a lunch ADR for our Feb trip and I'm super-duper excited!!! We have only eaten at 50's b/c the youngest demands it and we do love it but I'm thinking if I can win DH over with Sci-Fi then we can add it to the lunch option for our next family trip! :rolleyes1

Another first for that day is I got us tickets for Early Morning Magic at HS (aka MGM for you.. :flower1:) so we'll see how that goes - DH doesn't know either, I told him I have a surprise for him but I haven't said what...

You're getting me ready for Feb - 33 days!!!

I agree with the adding rum part. We are getting it!!! Even if we have to make it ourselves.
You got yourself a deal there!

We should also get this!
Sign me up!

I'm a big fan of the Rueben too so I was sad to see it off the menu but Jason's sandwich was even better. And I agree their burgers are always top notch. We don' have any reservations there for our February trip, but I'm guessing we'll end up there at some point. We always seem to.

Your trip must be getting so close!!!! Can't wait to hear all about it.

I'm really enjoying your report! HI there! So happy to hear you are enjoying. I know I love eating and drinking it all!!!

We've never had ramen in the world, but I've heard Morimotos is very good. We've only had the ribs and bao buns there, both of which are amazing!!! We're looking forward to likely eating here next month.

I can't talk to gyoza either but Skippers canteen has some really good shumai (we love all their apps).

As for Indian there is nothing authentic, but Sanna is probably the closest. We didn't get there on this trip but their bread service is amazing and their cooking has definite Indian and African influences. If your kids aren't picky then this is a great place to try.

You know, not every meal needs to be AMAZING! I loved SciFi when we went. It is fun. And the food is good. I am looking forward to going back in Feb.
This is true, but I still wan tit to be anyway :P

I love her face! Perfect.
Our girls are quite the hams!

Oooohhh!!! I need some amazing birthday surpise ideas!
This was for me and a very scary fall only event if you get my drift. Though I've gotta come up with some things for Casey for our trip next month.

on't knock it though as I'd love to have a food thief child given that my youngest is quite possibly the fussiest child on the planet! He is so good in every other way but food just doesn't do it for him:eek: How is it possible he belongs to me:confused3:rotfl: I
That is a good way to look at it. I may not get to eat what I want to, but I should certainly be grateful that Casey wants to eat the same things as me. Her apple definitely fell from my tree :-) I'm not sure I'd know what to do with a picky child. In fact her new years resolution is to try new foods. I'll send her across the Atlantic some day and she can show your son how its done :P

Laughed when I saw your comment about using (or not) acronyms for certain rides and yeah I was a wee bit disappointed by alien ss :(
I know right!!!! I mean they can say it on TV with regularity every day, why not here???? :confused3

Aye and what is it with putting signs telling you vital info to save tired feet in the wrong blimin place! Drive a body to drink (or at least it would if we weren't already:drinking1).
It would have certainly driven me to do that, had we not ended up walking a mile and a half back to the resort in 100% humidity and 90+ degree temps. Water was all that was on my mind.

Can't remember if I've said it already but if not Happy New Year to you and yours :thumbsup2
Happy New Year to you al too! Hope its a good one!

Phew! Crisis averted. :thumbsup2 One of the major disadvantages with solo travel... you walk out without shoes and without lotion rubbed in and your only clue is the points and laughs from random strangers... :sad2:
God only knows what I'd end up like if I was traveling solo. We're usually on top of things, but we were totally discombobulated this day :-)

This is how I feel about SciFi too - I always really enjoy it. And those milkshakes? Yeah... those alone are worth the trip in my book ::yes::
I think that is the whole reason Casey likes it too. I think that massive milkshake is about the only thing that made sure I got to eat my food :-)

That Prime Rib sandwich was one of the best things I ate on our August trip. It's not on the menu anymore though.

I think I agree Sci Fi > 50's Primetime even though I haven't been to 50's PT since 1990!
Oh no, I didn't realize it was gone. Jason is definitely going to not be happy.

I like 50's better largely for the fun antics and the fried chicken. If they could serve the SciFi food at 50's we'd be set!

Oh my gosh, your description of your food at Sci Fi has my stomach growling!!! We ate at Texas Roadhouse last night with my son and his family, and they ordered the fried pickles appetizer. I had my first taste of these wonderful concoctions! Yummy!
Your first taste of fried pickles. Say it isn't so :confused3 I'm much more of a pickle chip instead of spears girl, and SciFi recently changed which I appreciated. Oddly my favorites are at Hooters. Give me a good chicken wing and a fried pickle and I could care less what is going on around me :D

LOVED your review of Sci-Fi!! We have never ever eaten there on our 5 trips to the World, but I'm happy to say that I've booked DH and I a lunch ADR for our Feb trip and I'm super-duper excited!!! Oh I so hope you all enjoy it!!!! Too funny that your youngest loves 50s as I would think most kiddos would be all over SciFi
Another first for that day is I got us tickets for Early Morning Magic at HS (aka MGM for you.. :flower1:) so we'll see how that goes - DH doesn't know either, I told him I have a surprise for him but I haven't said what...
I've heard really good things for the early morning magic so hopefully you all love it!!!! And we'll be right behind you. We're 40 days away today!

I love Casey' s Queen tee shirt , need to get one like it for my Sis & myself. We have yet to get to 50s as our DHS ( or the Park once known as MGM) meal is usually lunch at Mama Melrose for flatbreads and cannolis which are hard to pass up. But since I am always looking for a lunch location that serves "lunch" food will have to keep it on the radar.

Well, when I say "youngest" he'll be 17 next month and also loves the fried chicken, the antics and that fried cheese appetizer!!

it's all about the food for him!

I just read an article about semi-permanent tattoos to create freckles and Casey has exactly the look that people are going for. So lucky!

We love SciFi and have been neglecting it lately since we don't spend much (or any) time at the Studios. That prime rib sandwich looks fantastic though and I am digging the fried pickles in chips form rather than spears. I have a feeling that once Galaxy's Edge opens, we'll be spending a LOT more time at that park to satisfy my nerdy husband.

The placement of that boat sign is completely illogical. Who makes these decisions??? :confused3

Thank goodness for Jason :worship:

:rotfl: I agree…not a fan! SDD is everything, though!

The buffalo tenders and fried pickle sound divine! Finally! Something I would eat

I've never been to 50's, so if it's your dream, we can go in May ::yes::

The 13 year old boy in me so desperately wants to be able to use that acronym. :p

I was pretty disappointed in this one as it really didn’t do much and I expected it to last much longer than it actually did. I guess you could say it sucked AS2.
I was a bit opposite of this. I expected it not to do much, but was surprised it was more fun than I thought.
But I wouldn't waste a tier 1 FP or stand in line more than 20 minutes or so for it.

I was able to get a bite or two and I was surprised at how good it was. The “tart” had a great pie crust like taste and the hazelnut filling was distinctly nutella like. The bacon added a nice crunch, but sadly no actual flavor to the mix.
I wanted to try one of those but never did. My girls love nutella so I expect they would have enjoyed it too.

I’d booked a day of reservation at Jason’s favorite SciFi. I’m much more of a 50’s girl, but to get him there is more trouble than its worth.
I've only been to SciFi once and found it "OK". I've been to 50's three times and prefer it. But if I'm being honest, I got a bit tired of that one too.
Neither is like Via Napoli where I want to go every trip.

Another Skolebrød thief caught red-handed?! I thought I felt a disturbance in the force!

We have never tried Sci-Fi in all our trips to the Mouse. But, we actually have an ADR for May. We read the so-so reviews over the years and came to the conclusion that drinks and a dessert couldn't hurt as we're there for the mise-en-scene and not the Michelin stars. That prime-rib sandwich may change that plan, though. It looks and sounds delish and so does the pineapple shake! Thank you for the tip! Now, what happened to that naughty (and probably always hungry) thief?!

I was reading your report out loud to my dad, who got all bright eyed when I read the description of the prime rib sammie to him. I then proceeded to make his day by letting him know it was indeed at Sci-Fi, where we absolutely already have an ADR for :drinking1 I think I got daughter of the year for that one.

Since I'm not a huge drinker too, I was explaining to him that I enjoy your reports because Casey seems to always get the "cool" non alcoholic drink on the menu when I scrolled to her with the shake. I was like "SEE? See?!" :rotfl: I'm so grateful for her ordering all the weirder sounding drinks so I don't have to chance it! haha
