I love credit cards so much! v2.0 (see first page for add'l details)

We have an HSA account to go along with our high deductible (6k) plan.
I make contributions thru payroll deductions and my employer does too.

I am paying for our 6k medical expenses using credit cards to meet MSRs and then withdrawing the same amount from HSA as it builds up over the year.

Are there any issues with this that I'm not seeing? Tax, etc.

Thanks

Same as everyone else, I've been doing this for a while and just make sure to keep/scan all my receipts. I keep everything in a spreadsheet showing the charges I paid for and my reimbursements to my bank account as backup also. Never had an issue.

I told DH this the other night, how I'd forgotten it until Lain pointed it out. He was just like, But... we pay everything off each month... :rotfl:

That is the hardest part about using the 0% as a float. I have the Discover IT and CIC at 0% so we've been taking advantage and using it to go along with the banking schemes. It is so hard seeing that balance every month! Even knowing we have the money in the bank accounts and CDs we opened it's rough not paying it off each month. Discover is finally being paid off in the next couple weeks as the CD matured and the 0% rate expires next month, so that's a load off. The CIC I've been throwing a couple hundred at it each month on top of paying off the monthly charges so it doesn't look quite so bad. But if I was going to go for the CIP next month then I'd probably want to pay it off ahead of time as I think the conventional advice was to not have a balance when looking for more credit. Now that I might change that (or pivot!) for the SPG card, I don't really need to but since I had it in my head to pay it off it's eating at me having the balance again

However, it's a sound strategy if you can manage it and don't get overextended. As a reigning champion of spreadsheets though, I suspect that won't be an issue for you :)

Small victory--I needed something (okay wanted something) at Sak's, today was 5% (vice usual 1%) back at Upromise so after the Amex Plat $50 back AND Shoprunner) my $168 purchase is $110 ($50+$7.50 from upromise) which means it's 35% off and I can almost justify it to myself. It's the little things like that which make me :lovestrucmy plat, still.
DS is wearing the Vineyard Vines polo shirt that I got for him the other day that to the Plat and 10% everything that Saks was offering. I ordered it in two different sizes so we could decide which one to go with. Luckily, it's the larger size so the other one will be shipped back using Shoprunner. (In my last minute haste to get my order in before the 10% expired I forgot to go through a shopping portal though :( )

I do love that Shoprunner is included with the Plat! I used it for a UA order the other day also. Everything came super fast!

Just got an upgrade offer on my Disney Visa for a $50 statement credit after one purchase before 3/31. Seemed like a decent deal especially since DHs Universal AP is still on autopay there. I was missing the 2x on Disney purchases when we put our recent cruise on there.

Now if only JetBlue would give me an upgrade offer! Doubt they will since I've sock drawed it after downgrading to the no fee after referring DH to the Plus for the bonus.

Priority pass question - Atlanta. I will have a 2 hour layover in Atlanta (flying Delta) in March. Can I get to the priority pass lounge in the international terminal if I am not flying international? Is it worth trekking there for some refreshments and (hopefully) more comfortable seating than at my gate?

Is there a special Shoprunner benefit with the Plat? I have Shoprunner from my no fee ED card. I thought it was the same for all MR cards but I only use it once in a blue moon so I don't pay attention.

This is very much a Dischurners sanctioned approach. On the Disney/FIRE thread our benevolent dictator (not sure if he's a dictator over there, but he did start the thread) @SouthFayetteFan mentioned this very strategy. I've just switched over from using my HSA card directly for medical expenses, and its really easy to do in my HSA system - it is linked to my insurance, so it tracks what the bill was, how much was paid by insurance and how much is "unpaid" by the HSA. I can either have the HSA send money to the provider, or have it reimburse me. So we are now using credit cards for all our health expenses and then getting reimbursed by the HSA. You can do the same thing by just keeping a file of the bills you pay by cc, then withdrawing an equal amount from the account, but I like the easy tracking (and it all feeds into my YNAB budgeting software which is nice too).[/QUOTE]

I’m not completely confident, and I may have misunderstood the posts I read, but I think I read on a FIRE board that it may not be required to pay the medical expenses with the HSA and the money in the HSA is allowed to grow tax free. This is a real nice option to save for future health expenses. Especially if one does plan to FIRE.

Clearly I’m not good at Quotes.

This isn't a direct answer to your question, but in case anyone reading isn't aware, you can also use the HSA as a retirement account. You can invest HSA money in more than just a savings account (investment options depend on what is available through your employer though) so that it grows over time. As long as the money is eventually used for a qualified health expense, HSA money is not taxed when it is contributed or when it is withdrawn, even if it's been growing for decades.

For example, my DD2 has medical expenses of about 7k a year, plus some extra that isn't covered by insurance but would qualify to be paid out by an HSA. We max out our HSA, but we allocate it to retirement savings and don't use it for medical bills. We pay her medical bills out of regular savings instead. Of course, not everyone has enough in extra savings to do this, but I find that many people aren't even aware it's an option. I really wish companies made this clearer!

I think it's also possible to transfer your HSA money to another HSA account with better investment options, but I haven't tried this.

Great idea - I've been thinking about The Sting (my all time favorite movie), Cool Hand Luke (ok, maybe I just really like Paul Newman) and Casablanca. My teen hasn't seen Casablanca yet - next time we are watching something without our little one, that's going to be it. We just watched The Parent Trap (the old one, not the Lindsay Lohan version) with the whole family - not quite what you are looking for from a classic movie perspective, but its so much fun.

I started with Casablanca and have seen The Parent Trap, not the remake which just didn't look good. At least they didn't remake Pollyanna. I've added the two movies you mentioned to my list :) I've got a couple I DVR'd off Turner Classic for back ups, Anchors Aweigh and The Spirit of St. Louis.

Don't really have any suggestions, but The Parent Trap remake is actually really good!

I lied, I have a suggestion, have you seen North by Northwest? That's a great one, and Rear Window. Not quite as old, but Murder by Death is also great.

Since we are on the topic of HSA, just remember not everyone is eligible for a HSA, you need to have a high deductible insurance plan. Even if your company does not offer an option to have a HSA through direct deposit you can still open an account on your own and then get the positive tax savings on your tax return. If you are eligible it is a great idea, even if you use it for healthcare costs, instead of planning to eventually use it for retirement. Look at your options when opening an account, some have fees if you don't have a minimum amount.

In other news, my citibank bank bonus finally posted and I transferred the money out. Had to make a call to close the account, given incompetent Citi IT. At least I didn't have to fight for the bonus like reports on doc. It was a relatively easy bonus that didn't require a direct deposit but given their IT and recent DPs of needing to fight for the bonus I think there are better bonus' at this point. Thinking I'll probably go for the discover bonus next. A little bit harder for me the first part of the year, because I'm still trying to revamp some of my liquid savings after making my max contributions to the HSA and IRA.

I have Rear Window on my list. I think I've seen part of North by Northwest and thought it just looked ridiculous. Do they end up at Mt Rushmore in that one? I'll add Murder by Death to the list :) My mom watches TCM a lot so I've seen parts of some, though she does have a tendency to watch the same ones over and over.

So I logged into P2's Chase account to find that the CIC credit limit is only $3000. I can easily hit that MSR in a month. What should I do?
