Yikes! I've been so busy with work and driving my mom to her doctor's appointments I haven't had time to look. Thank you for saving me the time! I guess we'll stick Hershey since I was able to book the room at the reasonable fed'l gov't rate and not the ridiculous Easter weekend rate.

Curious about this. I know there are a few other feds on this board also. Is it common for people to use the govt rate for personal use? I have talked about this with DH every few years to try to get him to use it, but he refuses saying it is against the law to use it for personal use. Just had the conversation again a few days ago. I know many people do, but just wondering how other people see it.

Interesting. I just funded DH's new account on Monday with his SW personal card. It posted as expected as a charge. Then last night, I funded a savings account with his SW Business card. The charge is pending. I can't see the funds yet in his account (it usually takes a couple days I think).

Thanks for the DPs! The change may have just happened today.

Thank you! Maybe I will try tomorrow. Had resolved myself that I would just keep it another year. I actually got the points in January so I could have cancelled before the fee even hit as it is 2 years old. I guess I’m not genteel either, I read it several times looking for the language and didn’t notice it.

I don’t know how so many people keep up with this thread and r/churning and I think also the gift card thread. You guys rock. Lol

Ah, maybe it's not considered bad language anymore. I just remember that if I used that alternate for "bum" I got the Mom Face back in the day. :) But yeah, in the language-verse it's just a little guy, I didn't zero in on it at first (or probably second, maybe even third :p)

Chatted with Citi just now and asked for a match. No fun convo with Destinee. Just "I put in your request for a match and you will hear something by mail in 7-10 days. Anything else you need?" Not feeling as likely as y'all who are being wished well to live and prosper and all...

LOL! Don't feel bad, our "live well and prosper" wishes aren't actually getting us any extra points!

Flying in and out San diego. Want JAL because out of that airport they fly the 787-8. My 6'4 brother just got back with his gf and said if
your going to fly economy fly that plane as he was pretty comfortable. 2-4-2 means no middle seat. lol

The thought of not having to use my UR's makes me salivate.:-)
The thought of the 5k spend makes me nauseous:guilty:

Any opinion on the Brilliance card?

Before considering the Bonvoy Brilliant card, let’s make sure we’re ruling out United, or at least how certain you are about flying JAL.

Award space on JAL opens up 360 days in advance, so if you want to book for next March/April/May you need to have the points in place now or within the next 2 months, because spring is a very popular time to visit Japan (and fly back to the US).

It seems you already have URs in place to transfer to United, 1:1, for one-way saver flights from NRT>LAX>SAN for 35k UA miles + $54.83 per person. United flies a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from NRT>LAX with a 3-3-3 seat configuration in economy. United opens up award availability about 337 days in advance. This might be a good backup.

As much as you may hate the idea of spending UR, isn’t things like this what the points are there for? And with you getting back under 5/24 in the next 6 months, URs should (hopefully still) be easy to replenish. Opening a Bonvoy Brilliant card will add a personal account to your 6/24, but I’m not sure how that’ll affect your plans to get back under 5/24.

One thing going for the Bonvoy Brilliant right now until 4/24/19 is it has a high offer of 100k Marriott points for $5k MSR in 3 months, after which the offer will probably drop back down to 75k Marriott points for $3k MSR. It does also carry an expensive $450 AF that’s not waived, but offset by the $300 Marriott credit and other benefits. Marriott points transfer to JAL at 3:1, so 110k Marriott (100k SUB and 10k from $5k MSR) will get you about 36k miles + 5k miles transfer bonus. (You need to transfer 60k Marriott to get a 5k miles bonus, so you’d need to have 120k Marriott to transfer in order to get those second 5k miles. Do you have another Marriott card to refer yourself to the Brilliant to get an extra 20k Marriott points bonus?)

i see some flights from NRT-->SAN on JAL on BA website for 30k, but $228 fuel charge... not much other way to do it with UR.
MR, u probably should check ANA but im not sure if they fly to SAN.

Other way to try is getting AA cards, booking JAL with AA miles.

Do you have the red aviator or the citi aa cards?

Up to 3 DPs on r/churning now and 2 on DoC (but 1 may be the same person). Not looking good. :(

I'm blind tonight, where's this discussion going on? I'm totally missing it (and it's probably right in front of my face) I saw the couple updates on DoC but they're not mentioning what the CA limit was on the cards that posted as purchase.

I'm curious if this is one of those situations where lowering the CA limit is the problem. Some banks initially pend as a CA but ultimately resolve as a purchase. So if you're CA limit is too low it'll just be rejected. It's a good way to avoid CA fees, but sucks if you come up on one these situations. I hope it's just something silly like this and not a terrible change :(

Actually im not sure why but i have seen award space for NEXT MONTH still available. I have checked several dates so i'm pretty certain
next year will be open. I'm not sure if it is the airport or the route isn't popular? My brother booked his in Feb for March and just got back.
Same airport and he had a choice of multiple dates. Looking at Alaska's site right now almost the whole month of April/2019 is still available.

Still debating going the Bonvoy/Brilliance route or Alborts suggestion of AA for JAL.

Lax is the furthest airport from me and i try to avoid but i might use your United suggestion as backup. Thx!

Could be (hopefully), someone just posted the same theory. I think all the DPs lowered CA limit. Here's the link:

Could be award redemptions in economy just aren’t as popular as in business or first.

Anyway, the United route I’m seeing is NRT>LAX on a Boeing 787-9, with a 1.5 hr. layover, then LAX>SAN on a Canadair Regional Jet 200 serviced by United Express, so 35k UA miles + $55 will get you home from Japan.

@wendow and @Lain I feel the same way about the Freedom. I drive quite a bit but still have only filled up on the Freedom maybe every other time. Category won’t be maxed or even close. Other times I have tried to fillup with Amex: trying to put spend on business gold and whatever SPG Biz is called these days. As much as the 5 times points is nice next time I apply for an Amex and don’t get a pop up it will be nicer. I don’t MS and there is only so much organic spend you can do! Fingers crossed Freedom does warehouse stores again (Costco). That I maxed out easy!

Thanks! My Ctrl+F was not strong in the Question thread :) I must not have loaded everything before searching.

Yeah, it's kind of vague there, but I agree it's a little troublesome. I hope that's all it is. I never got to use PNC for funding, I was one of the 1% where the funding got reversed so I had to find other spend to throw on there. But I had read something about that for one of the banks I thought of trying so, with so many DPs of PNC coding as a purchase, I never bothered to lower my CA limit. Bit me in the bum a few months ago when Santander suddenly changed from purchase to CA but at least I could be a DP of warning for others (except for @Natgridenergy, sorry!). My plan was to try again when I go for the CIP in a few months so I hope it doesn't change. I have backup plan for that too in case I'm cursed, but the PNC method doesn't have fees so I'm rooting for it :p

I don't like flying with a stopover unless it is planned.:)

What are your thoughts on the Red aviator? I'm wondering why it is not more popular. I don't usually fly American but i may get the
card for now. Although i wonder what Barclays limit is. I have 2 cards for them i already don't use. I know banks are cracking down.
