What counts as SoCal proof of residency?

Hi, I'm from NorCal, but am in SoCal for college, living in the dorms. I was planning on purchasing the 3-day SoCal discounted deal online. Does a student ID suffice for proof of residency? Do they even check for proof at the gates?

You need a SoCal zip code to buy the ticket.

From the Disneyland website

Passport Pick-Up Information
Your confirmation will explain how to print your Disney eTickets or access them from your mobile device that has Internet access. To pick up your passport, show your Disney eTicket at the Main Entrance Ticket Booth. You will need to present:

  • a valid government-issued photo ID
  • proof of Southern California residency for each adult ticket or pass if picking up Southern California Resident tickets/passes
If your ID doesn't have a SoCal zip code I recall a lease agreement in a SoCal zip code with the passholder's name on it being sufficient proof of residency but don't quote me on that.

You won't be eligible as a college student unless you live in an off campus apartment and have a lease/utility bill.

What if my friend, who is a SoCal resident, purchases the tickets and comes with me? I’ve heard that SoCal residents are allowed to buy discounted tickets for out of state friends and family, as long as one member of the party is a resident. Is this true?

This used to be true, but as of at least last year, posters here said that they were no longer able to do this. CMs were checking for proof of residency for each person who used the promo tickets. Would the Limited Time Special Ticket Offer work for you instead? It is $10/day more than the SoCal offer, but is still a very good deal.

When was it true? My brother is local and he’s never been able to buy any sort of discounted ticket for us.

Oh wait I vaguely recall that there was one special that allowed this, I believe. But that was a special ticket offer. Other than that, I don’t know that this was ever a thing.

I didn’t know that was a thing! Thank you for your input; I will look into that offer as it seems more suitable for my situation.

When you go to the DLR website, you'll see two offers on the ticket page. The Limited Time Special Offer is on the far right. Hope this works out for you!

I remember people posting that the first year this special was offered that CMs were pretty loose about checking for i.d. So we had reports of people buying tickets for out of town relatives and not having any issues going through the gates. But the next year the offer came out, we started seeing reports of CMs being much more strict about checking i.d. at the gates, and Disney was much better at getting word out that this offer was for SoCal residents only.
