Official 2019 Star Wars Rival Run Weekend

OK I have a question about transportation and hope someone can help me. My DS is running the one mile run on Saturday. He and the rest of my family will be going to Magic Kingdom that day. They would like to spend the morning in MK and then go to the one mile race over at ESPN and afterwards head back to MK. I have never gone from a park to ESPN before so I am not sure all the options. The ones I am aware of would be: A. Take a bus from MK to a resort and then another bus to ESPN. B. Take the monorail/ferry to one of the resorts on the loop and then a bus to ESPN. C. Take a Minnie Van or Uber/Lyft to ESPN.

Even though I will have a rental car, I cannot pick all of them up as there are 4 children under 6 that would need carseats. Anyone have any thoughts? I am hoping there is a bus from the MK bus terminal to ESPN but I do not remember seeing that in the past.
I don’t believe there are any buses from the parks to ESPN (but I could be wrong). I think you listed your options. The other one (similar to B), would be to walk to the Contemporary, and catch a bus from there.

I use an armband for my phone - the brand is TuneBelt (I bought it on Amazon). It's worked well for me. It doesn't slide down, never had any chafing from it, and when it starts stinking you can throw it in the washer & dryer.
Isn't Tunebelt great?! It doesn't seem to get much publicity, but it's been my favorite armband for years. The Velcro on mine is starting not to hold as well, but otherwise it's held together great through a LOT of use, and many, many washings.

My wife is running the Star Wars Half Marathon in a few weeks and wanted some tips on good spectating spots. We have a car and are on-site at Pop. I have our two little kids in tow and of course we want to cheer on Mom!
We have a good handle on the race route, but I wasnt sure where we would be allowed to spectate from or if we would be able to enter AK, EP, or DHS to watch the race.

Disney's info seems to amount to... buy the cheer package...:furious:

Could we watch from inside of AK or DHS assuming that we will be allowed to park our car or even be let into the parks that early? Is there any way we could hang out at one of the hotels along the race route that is less crowded?

Thanks!
My suggestions are either the AK parking lot, or outside the DHS entrance - with preference to the AK lot. As a runner, AK lot is such a great place to see your people, when you're starting to feel some fatigue and know you've got a looong stretch of highway coming up. As a spectator, it's open and roomy enough to have some personal space and be able to find your runner easily. The parking lots never actually close, so you can get in no problem, but you do need to go very early, as road closures happen early.

I drive everywhere at WDW, so I'm no expert, but I'd monorail to the first MK resort and take an expo bus from there, assuming no long lines at the time (I wouldn't imagine there would be at that time of day.) There is no bus from the parks directly to ESPN.

Like PP said I'd either walk or take the resort monorail to Contemporary then take a bus from there

Races start in two weeks!!!!

When are you all doing your last long training run?
I did 13.1 (my virtual half) 2 weeks ago. I have been tapering down since as I am actually at the same time ramping up a new training plan for a half marathon in June where I am hoping for a PR. I plan to run The Star Wars races as easy fun runs with character stops, etc. so I already feel I am ready.

Right??? Can we do virtual training? Is that a thing? I've learned a ton today!

If you mean "virtual training" in the sense that we only communicate over DIS PMs or email, yes. I've got 47 runners on current plans at the moment and have worked with well over a hundred different runners coming up with custom training plans based on them. It's essentially like our communication over the last day or so, but just over PMs/email as to not clutter up other threads. I've only worked with a handful of people in person (at my work, my sister, my wife, and my mom). Helped my mom go from a 5k, to 10k, to HM, to M, to Dopey over the course of 5 years at just over 62.

Wisconsin? Thats's not too far.

LOL!

Seriously though, all that information was amazing. I pretty much guessed about what intervals might be right when I started running! I'm STILL trying to figure it out. I'm running the 10k at Disney in April and just sticking to my current interval of 3.5min run/2 min walk for a 14:30 pace, but I recently learned that's probably not the best! I messed around on a 5k run yesterday and did 2.5 min run/45 sec walk and it went okay, but would definitely be an adjustment. The weird thing is that my pace improved by 45 seconds so that tells me I have room to improve/find what works. That's my next goal after this 10k!

And by no means are the intervals that I suggest a golden ticket. They're a starting point that I like to use and see how you react to the training. From there, we continuously tweak the training to hone in on something that works best for you while simultaneously trying to keep in mind physiological responses from training.

Are you a full time trainer/coach? Seriously impressed by how much I learned so quickly just from reading your posts today!

I am not a full time coach. It's just a hobby for me. I'm not accredited or classically trained in any way. I'm a researcher in a vitamin D Biochemistry lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. So my background is in science and interpreting scientific articles/information. The short version is, I wasn't happy with my progress back in the Spring of 2015. I was putting in so much work and not yielding the race results I felt I could achieve. So I took a step back and re-evaluated everything I knew about running. I read countless books by other coaches, training plans, and as many scientific journal articles as I could get my hands on. I switched the mindset to "Train slow race fast" and "Train smarter not harder". Followed a completely counterintuitive training plan and suddenly everything started to click. Dramatically dropped my PRs. Knew I was onto something and had to shout it from the mountain tops. I'd been a lurker on the DIS for years, but in late 2015 joined up and started to share what I had learned. People started reaching out to me for help on training plans. It's my goal to share my knowledge so that other people can have the same epiphany in their run journey as I experienced back then. Running/racing became significantly more enjoyable when I started achieving things I knew I was capable of but had yet to actually get. As he finishes writing this "short version" paragraph.... (I've got a verbage problem as my Principal Investigator would tell you). But essentially, running is a passion. And I enjoy sharing that passion with others and mentoring them to love running as much as I do.

You want the long version, go here (my training journal):

Last long run Sunday, with an 8 miler the day before (I'm doing the challenge). Then a speedwork type hard run on Wednesday is my last kind of challenging run. I'm ready to get on with it!

I just read your story! So inspiring. I hope that I continue to better myself the way you have!

Isn't Tunebelt great?!

Yes! I've been using it for years too. :thumbsup2

No taper for me - I'm running Star Wars as training for other upcoming races. I am a little worried about all the park time I will have in before the races though - that is a ton of time on my feet!!! :crazy2:

Ouch!! How many days will you be there beforehand?

I don't arrive until Friday, so my park days will all be day of and after!

I apologize for asking a question that is probably answered somewhere in here, but my search did not come across the answer. We have purchased memory maker, we tried to enter the code and the bib number, but it didn't do anything. Do we have to wait until AFTER the run to do that?

I don't know the answer, but wanted you to know you're not alone. I just tried following the directions in the event guide and keep getting the message that I've entered an invalid ID number. Since it's in the guide in the "post race" section of the reminders, I'm not going to start worrying until/unless it's still not working AFTER the race. Hopefully, someone with prior experience will chime in and put our minds at ease!

My current plan for before the 10k race:
Today - 5k
Saturday - 6-7mile run
Tuesday- 5k
Thursday - 5k
Saturday - 4-5miles
Monday - 30 minutes
Wednesday - 30 minutes
Saturday - Race day!

Does this make sense or is it too much (Or not enough?)

FWIW I normally either put the number in the night before the race as I'm setting my alarm or that morning as I'm waiting for the bus at my resort

Sorry - I'm new to all of this. Is the process for entering the bib number the same for people who have AP provided PhotoPass?
