Soooo... Here's a question. All of my biz cards I've applied for were either in my maiden name, OR I was getting another biz card with Chase/AMEX and they automatically put my maiden name as the business name. Sooooo going forward, was going to do a Citi Biz card... I'm good to use my new name right?

Ooh, thanks for all the tips. The glass beach is on my list of things I really want to see. Do you have any go-to hotels in that area? I've lived here all of my life (except for the college years) and I've never been to Fort Bragg or Mendocino.

Our go-to is The Stanford Inn by the Sea. It’s pricey, and not bookable on points or on the UR portal but it's a splurge well spent. The main building is a crescent-shaped lodge with rooms that open out to decks facing their beautifully landscaped gardens with views all the way out to the ocean. We actually spent the past 4th of July weekend there, and I enjoyed lovely, relaxing afternoons on the deck, reading, and watching the hummingbirds flit between flowers, usually after a morning hike. The rooms are paneled in pine and have fireplaces that give it a really rustic feel. Cell service is spotty, so it's a nice chance to put away our phones. The room rate includes breakfast every morning at their onsite vegan restaurant, The Ravens, an afternoon dessert, coffee and tea, as well as complimentary bike rentals from the next door Catch a Canoe & Bicycles Too on the Big River.

Another extra splurge we thought was well worth it -- We did a bioluminescence tour with Catch a Canoe one summer (before the kiddo), that was truly magical. A guide took our group up the Big River on a canoe and we could see bioluminescent plankton light up with the strokes of our paddles and the movement of our canoe. The guide also timed our trip so we could see the passage of the ISS in orbit above us. I don't know if Catch a Canoe still runs these tours, but they only happen on moonless nights during the summer months, so there are only a few opportunities every year. You may need to call well in advance to inquire and book, because when we did it, reservations were filling up fast. (I think you can do something similar closer to the Bay Area up in Point Reyes and Tomales Bay.)

Mendo has some cool shops, and some really good restaurants. We really enjoy Cafe Beaujolais and the restaurant at MacCallum House in town. We didn't spend much time in Fort Bragg last year, so I can't comment too much because things may have changed. Glass Beach is right off Fort Bragg. It's a fun stop. You'll find lots of people picking sea glass, even though I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to; and I'm surprised that after all these years of pickers there's still a good amount of sea glass that washes up onto the beach. You'll find white and brown glass is abundant, green glass is around too, but blue glass is pretty rare. The area has a few tide pools too, so it's cool to walk and look for crabs and other little sea creatures.

I believe @calypso726 pays for her ABD trips with Disney gift cards at 5xUR points. If you do that, with a Freedom during certain category spend or a CIC with 5x at office stores you could get a lot of points yourself. She is also the queen of getting good airline redemptions in first/business class seats. A lot of people here have reluctant player 2s. Though, I think a lot eventually see the light when redemptions start rolling in. Some never see the light. Some people here joke about signing up player 2 then telling them they got a card after the fact. I know it is all in good fun, but my sister found out the hard way her "loving" spouse was signing up for things in her name, so I personally don't even joke about it and would never suggest it. Good luck! What cards do you have already?

I have an Amazon Chase card. Together we have a Bank of a America that get's 5%.

Thank you so much! I'm saving this for future reference. I was hoping there was a "free" place to stay, but I'll take an amazing place instead. :)

We've done a bioluminescence kayak tour in Puerto Rico before kids. It was very memorable and has crossed my mind that we should take them sometime. Yet another thing I didn't know we have right here in California!

I've lived here since I was 12 and yet it seems I know my own state less well than the far flung places I've been. I haven't even been to Alcatraz yet!

Yes you have the 3/24 count right....the 3 months in between Chase Cards is a guideline..I’ve been approved with a month and 2 months, .since it looks like that was your first Chase card your probably fine to apply now or next month

Thanks, I also have a Chase Disney Visa and a CSR. They both get a good amount of spend per year (and both are paid off monthly).

I am probably over-thinking this, but I can't decide how to go about getting the rest of the IHG points I need. I'm booking 5 nights total - 2 with free night certs (one from my account, one from DW's), and the other 3 with points. Hotel is 40K/night so I need 120K points total. I have 49K, DW has 62K. Should I...

1. Transfer 18K UR points (worth $270) to DW's account.
2. Pay $45 to transfer 9K of my points to DW's account, then transfer 9K UR points (worth $135) to her account.
3. Buy 18K IHG points for $207 (and reimburse myself with 20,700 UR?)
4. Pay $45 to transfer 9K IHG points from me to DW & buy 9K points for $121.50 (and reimburse myself with 16,650 UR?)

It's probably 6 of 1, half dozen of the other, but I can't decide. I don't want to pay anything out of pocket if I can avoid it, but I also don't want to "waste" valuable UR points. What would you do?

Did everyone see there is now a public link for the Marriott $200 get $40 back offer? Worked out perfect for me as I was able to add it to DH's new Bonvoy Biz and will have a $300 charge for work in two weeks and so the $40 will be straight money in my pocket!

https://www.doctorofcredit.com/amex-offers-marriott-bonvoy-spend-200-get-40-back/

ETA: Was able to go in and add it to both DH's Bonvoy Biz and mine.

Boo, did that actually start? I stopped by today since I was in the area and didn’t see any signs so I left empty handed. I guess I’ll need to try and make it tomorrow.

There were no signs up in my Staples yesterday afternoon when I stopped, but I asked the cashier and she confirmed it was going. She did limit me to one per person (I brought DH), but I think that's very YMMV on cashier's. Already stopped by Best Buy today to pick up a Disney GC with Swagbucks... and to buy Crazy Rich Asians on DVD.

I am really considering the Amex HHonors Aspire card. I opened the HHonors Ascend in September 2017. I regularly spend quite a bit on it. (I earned a free night certificate last year, so that means I put at least $15,000 on it.) I should wait until October to apply for the Ascend, right? So I'm not paying two AF's. The $450 AF on the Ascend is the deterrent for me. We have a few trips this year that we'll be staying in Hilton hotels, and I would like the diamond status. Otherwise, I don't NEED the airline credit this year, and I don't NEED the $250 resort credit either. (We typically don't spend any money at the resort...) At this point, those bonuses would just be reasons to splurge and take another trip. I should wait, right? Will I have any problems canceling my Ascend if I get an AMEX Aspire?

I am at 3/5 for Chase I believe.

2/2019 Chase Ink Preferred Business - MSR Met
2/2019 Barclay's Frontier Airlines Mastercard - MSR Met
2/2019 AU on DH's AMEX Ascend (I probably shouldn't have done this. I only added it because he had a 5000 points bonus. I didn't realize it would count toward my limit.) *This isn't showing up on my credit report yet though. - MSR Met
9/2017 AMEX Hilton Ascend - MSR Met

I need to wait to open another Chase card until May, right? I have more spending to hit another MSP. Not sure where to go from here though.

I would caution you to slow down and develop more of a coherent strategy of which points and programs you'd like to really start earning in any significant amount. You risk burning through your under-5/24 slots pretty fast. The AU on DH's Ascend will show up on your credit reports about two months after opening, and Amex doesn't backdate and will not remove an AU from your credit report if the AU is a spouse. If you pick up the Hilton Aspire, because it's a personal card, you'll be at 4/24. While you can still stretch out that last slot with Chase until the 9/17 Ascend drops off by October, you'd really be limiting yourself to business cards that don't report. Interspersing business cards from Amex and Citi may be a good idea to keep you busy for those ~3 months or so that we recommend waiting between Chase applications. The CIP was a good start, but you'll want to accumulate a lot more URs with your 2 available slots since they're so flexible. The Ink cards are great sources of UR SUBs and don't add to your */24 count, and you may want a CSR to pool all your URs for the added 50% bonus redemption value. But similarly, if you get a CSR, it being a personal card, you'll be at 4/24 until your Aspire drops off by October. If you can wait until the latter half of November to apply for the Aspire, then you have a chance to triple dip the Aspire's airline fee credit on one AF (assuming no changes to the card's benefits).

Thank you. I have a CSR. I just checked my credit report. I've had it for 2 years 2 months.
I currently have 137,532 points. (I cashed out most of them for our flights last summer.) DH should earn 80,000 for his CIP. I should earn 105,000 for my CIP (and his sign up bonus). Should I sign up for another Chase card or wait?

The info on the AU on Amex is really helpful; I wish I would have known that a month ago! (Oh well, live and learn!)

We like our Hilton stays so I don't mind adding more Hilton points. Right now, I'm just accumulating as many URs as possible.

Ok. I'm going to look at the bright side. None of DW's cards had the Marriott Bonvoy offer, so I was able to use the public link to add it to her Bonvoy Amex that she's still working on the MSR. We have the Sheraton Universal Hotel for our upcoming weekend at Universal Studios Hollywood currently booked on a cash rate with 10% (MR) back on Ebates. I'll put $200 on my Plat, and the balance on DW's Bonvoy Amex to double dip the offer and save another $80 off our stay and help meet MSR on DW's card.

THANKS!

Have you thought about doing the book/cancel trick? That tends to run about .006/pt (you might have to search a little for that rate). That would only cost you $108. Plus, if you have an IHG card, you can pay with that and get 10x on the purchase price.

@Lain - IIRC you are the one who had issues adding a 3rd person into a Marriott stay with points. I'm trying it right now and it's doubling the cost of the room. Can you remind me how you worked around this issue?

Is it the BS extra person fee?

I called the hotel about it to complain, and the reservation desk basically told me they don't charge the extra person fee for kids (my DD is only 5/will be 6) as long as she fits in the room occupancy. She told me to just make a reservation for two adults and said it shouldn't be a problem with the front desk. I'm thinking I may just have DW and DD browse around in the shops while I check in and maybe not even mention DD; not that they'd ever know.

Yes, except my kid is an adult. But they want the same $ for one room as 2, in a specific room that can hold 3. This one is overseas, so I'd rather not call the hotel directly, but it's ridiculous. I know it costs more for a 3rd person in a room, but not around $400/nt.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I'll have to play around with it and see if I can find a good rate that way. Thanks!

@Ava - Look at the Intercontinental in New Orleans. Its a 50k hotel. The points/cash rate is 30k + $119. If you book and immediately cancel, you'd end up with an extra 20k vs the 18k you want, but price is good I think. Just make sure you book a cancellable res and far enough out so you don't get caught within the cancellation window. Good luck!
