Cigarettes,Ice & Stroller News

So this morning, Disney announced that as of May 1, no more smoking in theme parks. Also, no loose ice in coolers.

What do you think?:chat:

I feel bad for the kids. No matter what, they’re going to have to be subjected to the smoke which already sucks, and now they’ll have to be brought out of the park, for many multiple times in the day.

Ugh. I hate when I see kids in the smoking section while the adults in their party are smoking. I'll stop at that...

I didn't think of that... those poor kids. Maybe the smokers will take turns. Maybe there will be a Smoke Swap entrance.

I wonder if the huge inconvenience of having to leave and re-enter will prevent people from smoking for the day. Interesting.

I'm guessing it's an issue with leaks/ spills? Only soft-sided coolers are permitted and loose ice leaks right out when it melts (not everyone realizes that and/ or puts the loose ice in plastic bags). Not such an issue on the hot pavement perhaps but if you go through a gift shop or restaurant creating a spill it's a slip hazard.

Completely a guess/ speculation on my part.
There are plenty of hardsided coolers in the parks. If they are banned, they are not enforced nor is it mentioned in this latest update. Heck, I see many groups trudging around the park pulling along their coolers, wondering how on earth they make it through the day with the thing. I mean, I do get the savings of bringing your food, or need in some cases but not the pulling of the cooler.

I’m pretty sure they mean loose ice just in the cooler itself. Is ice in a bottle really considered loose? Then again, is ice contained in a ziploc bag loose? Lol.

Exactly! I wouldn't think twice about ice in a bottle if they didn't specify it couldn't be in a Ziploc bag! o_O

This doesn't entirely clarify but it looks like the move is to streamline the bag check, and they will offer cups of loose ice in the park (which someone could then put into bags, which are allowed). I'm taking that to mean some ice cubes in a water bottle won't be an issue and that the real target is loose ice in a cooler (which security would have to rifle through to see what's underneath).

Like others, I’m confused by the ban on loose ice. But I’m glad to see Disney is doing something about those wagon-strollers and other plus-sized strollers. It’s gotten very difficult to get around the MK with so many “not a wagons” everywhere.

Non smoking family here.

Unless Disney is fully committed to enforcing No Smoking then this is a total waste. Then need to scan magic bands and issue a warning. Caught again and you are escorted out of the park. Extreme I know. People walk around smoking now without repercussion. Taking away designated smoking areas is only going to make this 100 times worse. Instead of fixing something, they will be making it worse.

Also regarding, ice. It has to be security related. But don't get me started. There are too many ways to bring in contraband that they have to pick on ice.
Again, they are shifting the problem. Now people will be lined up a QS asking for cups of ice.

Unless they plan on selling ice in the parks, then genius.

I'm not a smoker, but people who take multiple smoke breaks in a day -- that is a super long walk for a 2 minute cigarette. Ouch.

Vast majority of smokers, at least the ones here in the US, are used to going long times without smoking while at work. So I suspect it's not like they'll have to run out every hour to grab a smoke

As to 2nd hand smoke, I've never felt it was something that was a huge issue outdoors. You aren't enclosed with it, forced to breathe it in. You have more than enough fresh air around you and can even step away from it, short of infants of course. While no, I don't want to hang out in smoking areas myself I've not felt th

Yay. Just yay.
Question of the day, we know the wagons won't fly.
Will the Cinderella carriage stroller?
Does anyone actually rent these? I didn't see any on my last trip in Feb of 2018, so I just looked them up online, and holy smokes 300 dollars to rent a stroller that looks way less comfortable than the ones that Disney rents! Have these become a problem as of late? They seem ridiculous.

They go so far as to say double jogging strollers will fit in the rules. I'm curious to see what is going to be too big, other than the wagons.

Yep, I've seen them in the parks. And the people using them have a ridiculously hard time steering them

So not true. Smoke travels. I've breathed it in numerous times just walking past a smoking area. Especially that one path by the castle. Also at the resorts. The smoking areas are right on the walkways, not set far off from them.

Then hopefully they don't fit the dimensions set out, so I don't have to deal with them next time ;). Disney should have added a height dimension too to eliminate these.

Whoops, it does seem hard sided coolers are allowed (I'm not sure why I was thinking they aren't- maybe I'm confused with DCL because it's been way too long since I've been on a cruise and I need some vitamin sea but I digress), and I will note that in my original reply.

In another comment above, I have a screen shot of Disney's "official" reasoning which is to streamline bag check, which makes sense. Security shouldn't have to rifle through loose ice to see what's underneath (I'm not sure what that means for those who put the ice into bags but I'm not in charge of these logistics). My mind went to spills because one of my many hats at work is accident prevention (also, need more coffee).

Thankfully I don't have to deal with a cooler at all anymore, and I no longer need a way to keep expressed milk cold for my visit. I'm sympathetic to anyone who does need to bring in their own food but I agree, I can't imagine pulling a cooler along behind me all day (when I had to bring a cooler it was a small "6 can" model with a shoulder strap and it went in the stroller of the infant seeing as the contents of the cooler were his milk). I can barely stand rolling it from the car to my spot on the beach.

The parents should stick a patch on for the day. I used to do it - I never smoked in my house or in front of my kids. I know it's not the same, but it'll take the edge off for the several hours in the park.

Perhaps I'm parsing words but when they say, "loose ice" do they mean ice outside of a bag, loose in the cooler? Or any ice? I don't see a ban on any ice, just "loose ice", which would make security screening a cooler problematic.

I'm all for the smoking ban, and I don't feel bad for the smokers. If you're going to bring a child all the way out of the park so that you can have a cigarette, you need to re-evaluate your priorities.

Stroller size is great, hope they enforce it.

I'd guess the ice banning thing has to do with people dumping it on the ground. I've seen it...not often, but a few times. They have a giant ziplock bag or cooler full of loose ice. When they're done, they dump it on the ground instead of lugging it around the rest of the day. I've seen it more at water parks than theme parks, but I've seen it in both.
