Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant/Dining Help Thread

My fiancee is vegan and the best two meals she had at Disney last week were at Satu'li Canteen and The Tangerine Cafe. The absolute worst (to her) was the vegan sloppy joe at Cosmic Ray's. She took the initial bite and that was it.

Satu'li Canteen is awesome! Totally unexpected, but fantastic for vegans.
Likewise, the vegan options (different for lunch and dinner!) at Docking Bay 7 at Galaxy's Edge are similarly weird and delicious.
If you're a Satu'li Canteen fan, you need to try the fare at Docking Bay 7!

I know it's been said multiple times already, Tangerine Cafe is one you need to be careful at. Sometimes the pita is vegan, sometimes it's not (you have to ask the castmember for ingredients) - likewise some of the side dishes that seem like they'd inherently be vegan can have dairy ingredients thrown in.
My "goto" snack is at the Tangerine Cafe though - Tangerine Flavored Slush! Delicious.

Created a thread before I saw this sticky. too tired to go through the entire thread.
Looking for vegetarian QS restaurants in MK, AK and in and around Swan and Dolphin resort for my wife which perhaps will also have pizza and fries for the kids and some meat options for me.

Satu'li Canteen you can eat vegan and there are meat dishes at the AK. You can eat vegan at Pecos Bill in the MK and still have meat options. Cosmic Rays in the MK has a vegan sloppy joe but it is terrible (in our opinion) and my fiance took one bite and was done. I tried it and it was truly bad. There is a vegan option at Be Our Guest with meat dishes available. Casey's Cornet has a vegan slaw dog plus other regular hot dog options.

At the MK now. Here are photos of the plant-based menus in the park.

At Be Our Guest, is the Vegetable Quiche still available? I thought it had been replaced. Also, at Skipper Canteen, I couldn't find the Jungle Green Salad on the menu. Does this mean that vegetarians can get a special menu? Thanks-this has been very helpful. I'll look for it when I enter MK in a few weeks.

I’ve heard the BOG had a menu change a while ago. My DD really liked what was on the menu at lunch before and now they have a bean cassoulet. We cancelled our reservation because it was too expensive and she wasn’t wild about the cassoulet. I’m not sure about a special menu. My DD was offered one at California Grill a few nights ago.

I’m going to AK tonight so I’ll see if they have a similar menu. We got the vibe from our earlier AK day that they were moving away from a lot of vegetarian meals. My DD was very disappointed that Salu’li Canteen no longer had veggie pods :(.

My favorite vegetarian meals for our Disney days were Sci-Fi Dine In Theatre with the tofu lettuce wraps they were delicious and so fresh! The rest of the family had falafel burgers and liked the flavor, but thought the patties were a bit softer than falafels usually are. Fantastic veggie sushi at Kona Cafe in the Poly.! My daughter and I also loved Shishito peppers at Morimoto Asia, and several tasty vegetarian breakfast options at Kona (last day).

My best friend who I’m traveling with is vegetarian, and I’m looking to make a dinner reservation in MK at a place that she will actually be able to enjoy. Which has better veggie options; Crystal Palace, Tony’s Town Square or The Plaza? Thanks in advance!

Hmm, that's a tough one IMHO because MK is my least favorite park for TS vegetarian food. When I've been to Crystal Palace in the past, the vegetarian options have been fairly carb heavy, and the chefs haven't been super excited about taking me through the buffet to point out what's vegetarian and have even "forgotten" that gelatin and chicken broth aren't vegetarian(but maybe I just got unlucky and/or things have changed??). Tony's is ok to me and that's what I'd personally pick out of your 3 listed choices, but a lot of people on the DISboard think the food is downright terrible. :( And at The Plaza, I've only had their fried green tomato sandwich with the meat left off (I found it pretty greasy, but my H liked it). Soooo, what we usually do instead of eating at MK is hop the monorail over to The Wave at the CR...they have several vegetarian options on the menu, they tend to have "healthier" fare made from more local ingredients, and the chefs have always been very willing to make off-menu items for my super picky vegetarian D. Alternatively, if your best friend likes fake meat, I've read that the Liberty Tree Tavern now has a plant based meatloaf dish that is actually very good, as well as a "portabello pot roast" that's veg and supposed to be good as well. Good luck with your decision! It's very kind of you to be so considerate of your friend's vegetarian diet! :)

I just returned from Disney, this is what I ate, I am vegetarian and gluten free which limited me a little more than just being vegetarian.
At Hollywood Studios - Mama Melrose - Polenta Cake, Mushroom, and Herb Cauliflower (this was so good!) and Flourless Chocolate Cake for dessert (also really good). I also got the S'mores breakfast sandwich at Woody's lunchbox made gluten free and it was decadent!!!
At Magic Kingdom - Be Our Guest Gluten free waffles, just ok, nothing special, the breads offered with it were great though. For Snack credit - chips and queso at Pecos Bills (loaded with salsa and corn salsa and lots of fixins)
At Kona at the Polynesian - Vegetable Bowl (just ok) but the Tapioca pudding for dessert was really good
At Animal Kingdom - Satu'li Cantina - tofu, rice and black bean bowl with creamy dressing (yummy!!), At the Nomad Lounge - gluten free churros (the best thing ever), at Tusker House - lots of options at dinner buffet! Too numerous to mention.
At Epcot - at Electric Umbrella I got the Vegetable Quinoa Salad (really good), At Spice Road Table the chef made me a yummy dish with stuffed grape leaves, saffron rice, lentil salad, hummus and grilled string beans (really yummy) and mango sorbet for dessert. At Teppan Edu I had a tofu veggie meal (really good). At the Coral Reef I had a skewered veggie dish, it was really good. At La Hacienda de San Angel I had Vegetable Enchiladas (amazing!!) and Mango sorbet for dessert. At the Food and Wine Booths I had the Brazilian Cheese Bread and the Madras Red Curry in India - both were great.

We have BOG breakfast reservations on 9/14 and the Vegetarian Quiche was still available as a pre-order option.

I am going back to Orlando in May of 2020, usually dining reservations and choosing dining locations have been a breeze, but this time I am taking my parents back with me, my dad is no problem as he eats anything. The main issue is my mom who is a vegetarian, I have looked through all the menu options and have found some that I think will suit all, the only issue is that my mom likes to have choice when it comes to veggie options otherwise it's dictated to her and I don't want to have my holiday ruined by my mother being unhappy about the food that being offered. I have some favourite restaurants that I know will do and have some buffet choices too. I just want to know can I put a request in when I make my reservations in a couple of months to ask for the chef to come and give some more choices then just one?

You mom sounds a lot like me. I like to have a few options when I go out to eat and I don’t think that is unreasonable. I don’t think meat eaters would be happy if there was 1 chicken dish on the menu with nothing else to choose from.

People here like to say that there are options for vegetarians but imho there isn’t. 95% of the time there is 1 vegan item on the menu that Disney has also dubbed the vegetarian “option”
Recently Disney has replaced not added plant based items that are intended to taste like meat. If your mom likes the taste of meat but just doesn’t eat it for whatever reason she might actually have the options she is looking for at some resturants.

For buffets- Once you (your mom) gets past paying $60+ for a buffet where she is going to eat $3 worth of veggies & pasta/rice she should have some choices. I like tusker house & Boma but do your research to see what you think she will like.

You are very sweet to do the research to make sure your mom has some nice meals.

You don't need to put in a request when you make your reservations (though you can notate if anyone has any food allergies), but you can request a chef to come to the table when you check in at the restaurant/are seated. It's not guaranteed, however. Sometimes the chefs are really busy, especially if there are a lot of people in the restaurant that have food allergies at the same time you dine. I certainly would not go in with the thinking that every chef is going to come out and offer her several choices not on the menu, especially if there is an option on the menu she can eat.

Definitely ask if there is a separate Vegetarian menu though as several restaurants have those and they aren't listed on Disney's site (though often you can still find them online if you search the restaurant name and "Vegetarian menu" on Google). California Grill and Yachtsman Steakhouse for instance both have an option to select 4 items from a separate vegetarian/vegan menu. HDD has a separate menu with 3 vegetarian offerings. The Bon Voyage breakfast has a separate Veg menu with several choices. Garden Grill (L,D) offers a veggie loaf with all the standard sides.

Some places don't have a separate vegetarian menu but do have a standard vegetarian substitute, like Ohana has a new vegan skillet at breakfast, and a tofu stirfry and hummus app at dinner. Rose and Crown has off menu offerings of Gardein fish, tofu masala, and vegan bangers and mash in addition to the Veggie Crumble listed on the menu.

Also check the online menus for restaurants frequently as they change all the time. CRT for instance recently added a second vegetarian offering for lunch and dinner. Yak and Yeti allows you to sub tofu in for several of their entrees and also has a new Cauliflower entree.

Personally, if not having multiple choices is going to put a damper on the trip, I would strongly suggest going to places that have multiple veg options on the menu, a separate veg menu you can find online, or are known to offer unlisted vegetarian items. Otherwise, there really is no guarantee that a chef will be able to come out or offer other choices for her.

Thanks for your help. Luckily were have the Dining Plan so the prices don't worry me. I think I just wanted to ensure that there is more then just a salad on the menu

Thanks for you help and tips. I know a chef isn't always guaranteed, hopefully a cast member will be able to make a suggestion. I have looked at several restaurant that have a separate veggie friendly menu, I think I'm just worrying a little too much about it to be honest as I know that Disney have come a long way in the 10 years since my mom last went. I think as long as I specify vegetarian in the reservation we'll be okay.

Your welcome!! The staff will almost always try and bend over backwards to make her something. Be careful of the soups, flavors you would think are 100% safe are often made with a beef or chicken base. The dining plan helps take the sting out.
Good luck and have fun planning your trip!!
