Anyone concerned about the Coronavirus in WDW ?

705 infections and 6 deaths as of now. A 0.8% mortality rate. Not something I want, but I’d imagine the demographics on the ship skewed older with comorbities.

Thanks. I think a cruise ship provides an interesting control group sort of. The data I have seen mostly from China seems to show that that starting at age 60+ the mortality rate spikes to 30%.

I will say this for certain. One side here will be able to eventually say "I told you so". But only one side will take any joy in saying it.
That’s true. My money is on how this will turn out. And we can all blame the main stream media. Once again

I expect this to be worse than the swine flu in 2009. That's kinda my floor for this outbreak if it starts spreading through the US.

Remind me again about cancellation deadlines. Package vs. room-only. I assume if the parks actually closed (whether that is crazy speculation or not), that refunds would be issued. In the event that we are all fighting a pandemic, I still don't want to be out $5K.

I keep hoping we will turn this around; that we can get a hold of it, reduce the mortality rate and move on. I remember H1N1 in 2009. My twins were six weeks old when the vaccine became available to high risk groups—that was us with the twins. Waited in line eight hours for the shots. That was a scary time too.

Refunds have been given to any of the Disney Parks across the world that have closed. They do the same for hurricanes.
I don't recall the specifics of it but it's easy to check online.

Those of us who have lived through past nationwide health issues probably have a good take on what to expect especially when they had loved ones in the at risk groups. I suspect a lot of those who think this is a big media scare don't have to worry about the elder in age, those w/ autoimmune problems, etc.
Like many others I hope we can turn this around but I'm not betting my well being or that of others on it especially when the requests to date are so minor.

I have no doubt that there are some people putting in 12+ hour days trying to develop and/or test a covid-19 vaccine. These are the unsung heroes. We should be glad that it does not have the mortality of Ebola or similar diseases. But it reminds us that we are just biological creatures that nature tries to perform population control on. I recently learned of the sweetest 3 year old girl in the family of a co-worker who died of the flu. She was not vaccinated. Is that nature trying preventing her genes from going on? What a cruel method.

My feeling exactly. Dh has asthma and hypertension so he’s definitely vulnerable. Over fifty too. No trip is worth potentially compromising his health; I realise that we aren’t safe at home either.

I wonder how this is impacting Dreams Unlimited Travel. How many people are cancelling their existing trips or not scheduling new ones?

In general if I was thinking of booking a vacation within the next 5 months I would probably put it on hold right now. I booked April back in September when nobody had even heard of coronavirus or covid. I am keeping my plans for now, but I will not stick my head in the sand. I will prepare to bail if the situation is getting worse. My flight money with Southwest will be good for a year. I would lose one night I booked with a DVC points reseller.

My DH and I are taking 2 DDs and 2 Sil's and 5 of our grandkids (all between the ages of 4 and 2) to WDW in November. It's a birthday/Christmas present for the littles because all 5 have birthdays between mid Nov to mid Dec. Trying not to get too worried

Without going too far down this rabbit hole, I’m going to say that this outbreak makes the case for government healthcare, where folks aren’t afraid to get treatment because their out of pocket deductible can possibly exceed their savings. I don’t want to hear about uninsured people dying from this outbreak or those with ridiculously high deductibles.

If someone can not afford care, please go see a social worker at a hospital and they can help you with your bill. If you are sick go get the medical care you need. The hospitals will treat you and then see a social worker.

I read that the HHS is working with health insurance companies to come up with a plan the for the possible high medical bills for the serious and critical cases. - I can't remember where I read it -

A friend of mine was not treated for her cancer in time because of government health care. She had to wait four months for a CT scan and then another 6 months for surgery.

Another friend of mine was a doctor in the US and went to Canada because "they know how to do it." Well, she is back in the US and is no longer for government healthcare.

By November It will most likely have run its course. It’s already starting to calm down in China. I’d say the next 90 days are much more worrisome.

Room only is 5 days, packages are 30...or was it switched to 45?

This is what I don't understand. If you are caretakers of the elderly or the immunocompromised, you should have been super concerned about the flu all along. Frequent hand washing, staying away or wearing a mask around them when sick, using hand sanitizer and surface wipes...are all things one should have been doing all along.

Taking care of my elderly parents the past few flu seasons, I did my absolute best to prevent myself getting sick and passing it on to them. I can't take anymore precautions over Covid-19, because I've already been doing everything I can to prevent all the other germs that could have made my parents seriously ill, while still living and enjoying life.
