The DisFort's Chit Chat Cafe

So yesterday DW and I were up early, hit the local power equipment store and purchased a new Husquevarna lawn tractor to mow the grass with. We got this done before our zoom meeting. They will deliver it this week as they had to finish prepping it, put gas in it, wax it, etc.

Today will consist of area prep for the storm coming up from the south, making sure all is secured and put away. Smoking pork ribs for dinner and we also need to get our tow vehicle out for a drive, which Reba will enjoy. So a full day ahead, but temps here today are starting at 32 degrees. Here is to hoping we warm up quickly.

Nice,

But they are waxing it?

Well ok, that may be a little over the top wishful thinking on my part. But will need it for sure by the time it gets here, with the rain the other day, rain tonight and near 70 today grass is growing fast.

Happy Easter to everyone. Praying for the storms moving in the South today. Our Texas storm this morning went NE & missed us in La Grange.

Happy Easter to everyone also.
Glad the storms missed you all. We moved everything inside the garage, since they are predicting T-storms today and more tomorrow and high winds (up to 75mph). Only thing left to do is once dinner is ready I will secure the smoker.

Hope all are safe down there in the South, seeing many tornado's and in places I know our Dismembers are. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I hope you all had a very happy easter. We had a full weekend! After saturdays repairs on the shower that wouldn't turn off (new cartridge) we relaxed most of the day and made our easter Dinner on saturday. Ham, green bean casserole, baked potatoes, sweet roles and cranberry sauce. Not a big meal, but perfect for us 4. We wrapped up the day watching Hop together.

Eastern morning the bunny came hiding eggs through the yard so they girls could find them and solve a puzzle unlock a gift EB left for them.

After breakfast was a Easter day Zoom with family. Once that was done we started our oldests girls birthday celebrations with a Hunter Street (tv show) style treasure hunt that lead Lauren to our RV where we had it all decorated with her cards and presents. When that was done I got the news of today's high winds and storms so I took some time to hunker things down and close up the RV. Birthday girls dinner request was Papa Johns (which is why we had easter dinner a day early) and finished off watching the Live Action Aladdin. I enjoyed it, but it was not anything mind blowing or taking away from robin williams. I am glad that they did not try to make Will Smith deliver the same punch lines, he would not have been able IMHO.

Today is a chilly start, we have creamy ranch chicken cooking in the crockpot and leftover pizza for lunch.
It's a nicer than the storms a tornado warning in eastern part of the county. Sadly the kids did not feel motivated to get out there and pull weeks like @Teamubr lucked out. But we will get to that later this week, maybe when its a bit warmer in the afternoon. I still have 30 bags of mulch to lay down.....next year I am definitely going with a bulk delivery and using the mower and trailer/cart to do most of this.

So, I have a job interview tomorrow. This being on unemployment, even if it is only 3 weeks now is driving my crazy, not use to sitting at home doing nothing. Anyways, and please don’t be judgmental, I’m stuck as what to do. I know only I can make the right decision for me but I would like some input.

For those that don’t know I do commercial concrete construction, think hospitals, retail businesses, mini storage units with the occasional residential thrown in. It is a physically demanding job and hard on the body, I will be 50 this year. Some company benefits out way each other, I’m ok with losing a little pay it’s the 6 weeks vacation that is really making me think.

While my interview isn’t until tomorrow all I know for now is the health benefits are better and it has some sort of pension plan. The new job won’t be to hard on the body, and I won’t be working in extreme weather conditions like at my present job.

Just wondering what all you great Disers think.
Thanks

That's a tough call. As we get older (I'm 57), the thought of less physically demanding work is very appealing. That being said, better health care is also very appealing.
What kinda vacation time are they offering/can you work up to?

That part I’m not sure of right now. Is at 2 tomorrow. I know my main questions will be pay, I’m ok with losing a couple dollars, health and vacation. Not sure if it is set vacation or PTO.

Well since you asked, Vince.....

the pension angle and health options (not just for you but DW and Lil Medic) are certainly something you have to consider. There are usually trade-offs involved in this kind of decision but you have to think about the fact that you're not living now for the LAST 30 years but instead living now for the NEXT 30 years.

Good luck and God Bless!

Bama Ed

PS - I am only a few years older than you so I certainly understand where you're coming from.

PPS - DS#1 was still on my insurance at age 23 when he had a serious medical issue. The insurance and Health Savings Account took care of the immediate problem and then he remained on my insurance long enough for a second procedure to keep it from re-occuring. He's 27 now and very healthy (and off my insurance but on his own).

Vince, first of all I have a ton of respect.

Medical benefits is huge, not only for you but family as well.

3 years ago I took a pay cut to leave the emergency department and go to neurology primarily for a better schedule and less stress. It was worth every dime of pay cut without a doubt. I hated to return to the ED because of the grind, but it really made me realize how much better a less taxing job can be.

Better working conditions and health benefits is a go as far as my opinion.

Thanks @bama_ed,@tiggerdad, and @tigger92662. This has been keeping me up at night thinking about it, I will see what happens in the morning. It’s a lot to give up from my current company, benefit wise, but I really haven’t been happy there since October and both my bosses know it.
I no that if your not happy somewhere, cut your losses and move on. Maybe this will be a good thing.
