Do you know people who completely buy into conspiracy theories? Like 9/11 was an inside job, the moon landing was faked, earth is flat, jet contrails release chemicals meant to control us, vaccines are an excuse to insert microchips that will control us, covid-19 is a manufactured "plandemic" meant to control us and curtail our freedom, 5G is responsible for coronavirus, there are shape shifting lizards on earth that pose as humans and have taken places high up in our government, etc. What other conspiracies have you heard from people you know?

I don't understand that level of paranoia. Where does that come from? Do you think the amount of people buying into these theories is greater right now than at other times in history, or has this kind of thing always been with us in similar amounts?

I think I'm willing to get on board with the shape shifting lizard thing...

I am sure the poor men in Tuskegee also didn't think their gov't would lie to them and intentionally cause harm either.

I answer the phone in a TV newsroom, so I talk to those folks frequently.

You left out the drinking disinfectants. I had a man call claiming he has been drinking an ounce of bleach a month for 30 years. Hasn't had the flu, a cold or had a cut or scrape get infected since he started doing that, according to him.

Yes, I guess I can see there is some history of our government not doing the right thing which could add to the suspicion. Forced sterilization, Native American displacement, taking children away from Native Americans to be adopted by white families, poor decision making and subsequent cover-ups of environmental and health crisis like the Flint Michigan water supply, making unsubstantiated claims about weapons of mass destruction used to justify a war, etc.

I do know a 9/11denier and that makes me boil, lose the ability to speak. On the other hand we all witnesses the whole smoking is good for you thing 50's-80's right? I remember them being in vending machines and picking up packs that said they MAY be bad for pregnant woman. Now we know it was known all along, sort of tough to rebound complete trust from the commerce -v- you, guess who loses experience.
I am a healthy skeptic when money can be gained by the person speaking.

My mom's husband sent me a conspiracy theory video just last night. I didn't even make it half way through. I really don't understand that way of thinking, but I will say that the few people I have known over the years who tend to believe those things all have very similar personality traits.

Aliens. Little green men, little grey men, men in black. Youtube clic bait. I'll admit I've spent hours watching alien videos. Altough I believe we are not the only life out there I do get a kick watching the videos I have more fun reading the comments

Duh, the moon landing was real - we no longer go to the moon because the aliens that live in its core told us not to. http://proofofalien.com/top-10-proof-of-aliens-on-the-dark-side-of-the-moon/

My favorite covid one was that it was an attempt to keep us inside and distracted while the worlds governments rounded up Epsteins clients (let's see, Obama, Tom Hanks, Hillary Clinton, there was a whole slew of famous names on the list). I can't find a link for it but it was circulating on facebook about a month ago. Poor guy that wrote it was obviously off his meds.

Oh, and Polaroid is controlling the sun. https://www.slaveplanet.net/index.php/space/317-the-sun-simulator-theory-examined-final-report

Our educational system teaches us what to think, not how to think for ourselves. Critical thinkers are far less likely to fall for conspiracy theories. They are trained to seek out the truth, not accepting a point of view without evidence from a variety of sources.

The thing is that all of that stuff got found out. It's actually very hard to perpertrate a lie on that scale. Those who buy into conspiracy theories assume that it's easy because "the government" or whoever has so much power. The fact is they're just people and the more people that are involved then the harder it is to keep anything under wraps. That's not to say that our government doesn't lie to us, it's just that it usually becomes pretty obvious in short order when they do - at least if it's something important. I'm sure they have a few secrets of course.

So, what kind of situation are you skeptical of where money can be gained by the person speaking? Do you mean something like you have vaccine skepticism because the doctor that suggests it and people who made the vaccine make money off of it? I mean in theory almost any product we buy/consume could be secretly harmful since someone makes money off of it, right?

But how long did it take to be found out, and how much damage was done? FIL has lung cancer from the "smoking is cool" era so that tab is still running I think

Good one. Gotta wonder how, since vaccines predate microchips by a couple of hundred years.

I missed the vaccine one, I always heard it was President Obama ordering that everyone in the country be microchipped by the end of the week (conveniently never said which week).

I forgot to add ... conspiracies about JFK, UFOs/Area 51, and the secret group - The Illuminati - who apparently control everything in the world.

Yes I do and I worry about their mental health.

I had someone tell me the numbers we see on TV are lies meant to keep us scared. I told him to go on believing his conspiracy theories.
