Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

We went to the San Diego Wild Animal Park this last weekend and mask compliance was not enforced. We heard no announcements, saw lots of exposed noses, saw some people flat out bear faced, and saw no one corrected. Maybe 90% compliance overall, but it still made us uncomfortable.

Regarding Disneyland reopening, what's the consensus at this point? I have an early September trip scheduled that I'm HIGHLY tempted to reschedule for WDW this week if things don't look promising. I'm also looking at the long lines in DTD to get into stores, midweek, without any hotel guests...makes me wonder about how bad DTD will be once hotels and/or parks reopen.
I've also been to DTD in the evening. I went 2 weeks ago on a Wednesday at 5:30 and the lines weren't bad at all. The line for WOD only took a few minutes. Same with Marcelines, Dress Shop, and the Home store. Once inside the stores, they are low capacity, and have plenty of space to social distance.

The cases are beginning to plateau so there are some good signs.
We've been watching it quite closely - at first to decide what to do about our September trip, and now it's more of a morbid curiosity "did we make the right choice" situation. The numbers are still well above the thresholds, and I've heard OC has been having issues with people not wearing masks, which might explain why it isn't really coming down. I don't see how Newsom can possibly allow them to open when the schools aren't allowed to open unless they hit all the thresholds - even though I agree that you're likely safer at a Disney park than at school, the optics would be terrible, and I've worked in education long enough to know that it's all about public perception. For that reason, I don't see Disney parks opening before they hit the thresholds. Am I remembering correctly that things won't be allowed to open until the cases are below the thresholds for 14 days? In that case, the earliest we could expect DLR to open would be mid-August, and that's assuming OC can drop their positive rate by a lot in the next week.

Yep, perception is everything. Almost any time I hear a news organization talk about the Florida surge in cases they bring up the fact that WDW opened up. :confused3 Doesn't matter that the Orlando area is no where near the hot spot in FL or that no outbreaks have been linked to Disney's opening. I can only imagine the reporting if DLR opened right now with California leading the county in case numbers. Disney is in a no win situation and so are we.

Correct. 14day trend needs to be < 100 per 100,000 to get considered off the watch list. Orange county: 0 Days under that metric. Trend line is improving, but given rate, won't get below 100 per 100,000 for probably another 2 weeks. then 2weeks to stay below that -- we're pushing an end Aug/labor day opening .

edit : opening end Aug pushing -- an announcement MAY happen as soon as coming off the watch list, but the politics of that can be very dicey.

I'm currently holding a reservation at the VGC for Labor Day. I'm really on the fence about keeping this reservation. I know there is no holding right now, so that's good, I just can't decide if I should throw in the towel. It's so frustrating and hard to navigate traveling with Covid-19 :(

Oh man. I was actually debating on driving down to the zoo this weekend too. Maybe I'll rethink that....

We went to the zoo two weeks ago and didn’t see a single person without a mask. The zoo is huge. Tons of wide open spaces. We go to the beach and no one is masked on the beach and we stay away from people. The zoo felt way less busy and way safer.

I had a little trip down to San Diego in my mind for September since I cancelled my WDW trip. Just a way to get away for a few days to enjoy the zoo and the area down there. But if masks are not 100% required, that will not work for me. Sigh.

Sorry mods, I know this is off topic, but I’m addressing the comments about people being being hesitant about coming to San Diego because it’s not safe, and that’s just NOT true. I won’t say another word!

Omg San Diego is safe. We live here. I personally would avoid places like Mission and Pacific Beach. We’ve been to the zoo. Didn’t see a single person without a mask. The only places people don’t wear masks are on the beach, so if that makes you uncomfortable, don’t go to the beach...

For folks quoting percentages in your posts, Id love if you could include links to your sources so those of us out of state can follow along!

Thanks for the extra perspective. Sounds similar to how the beaches are in LA County that I have been to.

So does the county think there is protection under ADA? Hopefully OC knows better so that when DL opens people will be wearing masks. Also, please let that be soon! ºOº

I don’t know!!!! Maybe @disneychrista or @theluckyrabbit know.... I’m assuming the county either doesn’t know or doesn’t want to test it???? Disneyland is a private business.... can they refuse entry to people who refuse to wear masks allegedly under the ADA?

I understand how you're feeling!! Same boat. I think I will jusy wait it out and let them release the points. Sad I won't have that experience. :(

This is Orange County's specific. Each county has similar tracking:

Yep 250>220>200 -- 150!

It is worth pointing out that OC Health Agency posted yesterday and today a disclaimer on FB that there is a significant lag in reporting at the state level which will result in artificially low numbers for yesterday and today and they expect them to increase dramatically in the coming days.

They wrote:
"The California department of public health is experiencing an issue processing electronic reports from some labs. As a result, there are reduced tests and cases reported due to the delay with receiving these reports."

In other words, don't get too excited by these numbers.

True. If you look at the website and go to the PCR tab; the #s tested over the past two weeks have dramatically declined. Orange typically tests 1.5-2x our county rate. They've been matching ours lately which is weird.

Well that’s a bummer. I was excited the numbers were tracking down and then read your post and mehhhhhhhhhhh.

Something I just though of today as I made a visit to DTD, when the parks are open I wonder how they’ll set capacity (parks and dtd) as most of us have to go through dtd to get to the esplanade. I wonder if they’ll make a second checkpoint where the old dtd security used to be for park goers to visit dtd.

LA County has had a lag in data as well for the past few days for both cases and hospitalizations,
