If you were a billionaire

I hear people say they were donate to charity if they suddenly came into massive amounts of money but which charity would you donate to?

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.. American Heart Association. My current and former churches. GRREAT - golden retriever rescue.

The place my dog goes to daycare/is boarded as they're also a dog rescue, non-profits that do equine (horse) therapy for special needs kids & adults, Down Syndrome Association, Special Olympics.

I make regular donations to two Morgan Horse charities - Morgan Safe Net and Forever Morgans. They rescue Morgan Horses who are in kill pens or are in danger of slaughter. Many of the horses are dumped without their registration papers. These organizations save the horses, do DNA testing to see if they are registered and get their papers, if they are. Many of these horses are used and abused by the amish and require medical care and other rehab/training so they can live productive lives. Their transformations are remarkable. These are two pictures of the same horse - what a transformation for a horse on his way to the slaughter house.

The same ones I give to now even though I'm not a billionaire. I'd also set up my own charitable foundation and spend the rest of my life giving the money away. Who needs to be a billionaire. :confused3 And of course this is a win-the-lottery type of daydream; no other way I'll ever have that kind of money.

My daughter and I were just discussing this a few days ago. We were thinking about the Make-a-Wish Foundation that grants wishes to seriously ill children and their families. I think these wishes mean as much to the surviving family, if not more, because it gives them memories they can hold on to after their loved one is gone.

With that in mind, we were thinking of a reverse Make-A-Wish Foundation that grants wishes to families with a terminally ill parent. I lost my beloved dad when I was a young adult. As awful as it was, I’m grateful I got as much time with him as I did. It would be so much harder for young children. We would start a foundation that would send terminally ill parents and their children to Disney or other fun places. The memories, photos and videos would hopefully give the surviving family members some comfort. I imagine, for very young children who would eventually have no memories of their lost parent, such photos and videos would mean a great deal. So, if we win that billion dollar lottery, that is what we would do with it.

Not sure I would give to an actual organization. I don't agree with how it seems the people who run most of these organizations make enormous salaries from them.

I would be more inclined to give away randomly to people I encounter. Think like cut in the front of the grocery store line to tell the cashiers at the line I'm in and the lines beside me to charge everyone's groceries to me. Obviously give enormous tips. Stuff like that. Pay people's medical bills and then some to help out individuals. By now, I know many people throughout my life that has medical troubles.

We talked about the lottery recently at work as most people have. I said one thing I would do is live off the interest of whatever I had where with the kind of money the lottery was, at 7% my biweekly paycheck would turn from peanuts to $1 million every 2 weeks if my excel file is correct. I can't spend that. The first thing I would do is get my pilot's license, then every month whatever I had left from what my interest made that month, go up in my plane with boxes full of cash and toss it all out the airplane overtop of various areas, LOL.

MS research, Mental Health issues, Alzheimer’s research, and I’d find the best way tax wise to donate to the day care where I’m on the board of directors. They need a new space at the very least.

Down syndrome medical research - we’re finally at a point where medicine/genetics can make great strides here. Obviously, my priority is to improve the lives of the many wonderful people I know with Down syndrome. However, with wider affect, I want folks studying a population that nearly never has solid tumor cancers (that sounds a lot like a realistic shot at a cure for cancer).

Next would be funding research for small population diseases.

We live in a wondrous time, but still need funding to enable focus. So very much can be accomplished.

#1 donation would go to St. Judes Hospital.
I would give them tons of money if I had it.

I would need to do research on other charities before giving money to them. It’s very important to me to have the money go to who needs it and not line the pockets of the upper management that runs them

We regularly donate to St Judes and organizations that help with food insecurity. We would just donate more.
