Mike,
... and will ride behind Steam on the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad (this one is understandable since steam only runs on certain days of the week. Don't want to show up and ride it to find it's a diesel day. )

Well we gotta start somewhere, or i can make enough for a meal in itself.Appetizer?
bama_ed, We are doing the train also ... will be leaving Pigeon Forge on the 12th, going around the mountain and checking in at a campground in Bryson City. Staying 5 days there which includes doing the steam train/ site seeing/visiting friends that have a "permanent campsite near Bryson City".
Cool. We're doing it Thursday the 10th (apparently the Steam loco only runs Thursday-Sundays) and then heading towards home on Friday (but going to ride another steam train in Chattanooga on the way - cheaper and shorter ride). But I can provide you with a full GSMRR report if you wish when we return.
In my case, tripleb, I had to sign up for the Crown Class of seating. It was the only enclosed seating type available/left over. The open air (gondola) class cars are fine with me if I am buying the tickets day-of-the-trip (when I know the trip weather outlook) but don't want to chance it with DW riding with me.
Wish I had more time to spend "over the mountain" in that part of NC but maybe some other time. You'll have to tell me any interesting things (besides the train) you do over there once you get home.

DW has been disappointed the last 2 trips. We have been through Cades Cove a number of times and never seen a bear. We saw one on the main road not far from the Sugarlands Visitor Center a LONG time ago on our honeymoon.

Well the bear either has a brown patch or it has the start of mange. And boy is it tiny.
I have spent countless hours in that park. Only few bear sightings. The bears keep away from roads and crowded areas. That park is huge, they have too many less crowded places to be. I spent 4 days at Shenandoah NP and saw more bears than all my years at GSMNP.DW has been disappointed the last 2 trips. We have been through Cades Cove a number of times and never seen a bear. It looked a little undernourished. Maybe just came out of hibernation?
