The Running Thread -- 2022

I was just telling someone last weekend London is definitely on my list! But I think I need my kids to be a bit older so I can spend enough time there before the race to overcome jet lag. Their school is getting in the way of my running… Or I need to find some running buddies willing to travel 😁

Count me in! 😄 I put in for the London lottery this year. Shhhh don't tell me husband. I'll cross that bridge if I ever get chosen!

London is 100% on my list. The course goes through many of the iconic London areas. I lived in London, met my husband in London, and honeymooned there, so have a special connection. I also need to wait till my child is a little bigger. Taking a 6 month old on a transatlantic flight does not sound fun.

No worries. They'll be out of the house and on their own before your lottery application comes through!

Barkley Marathons course won again with no finisher.

For those missing the Disney talking trash can PUSH (since we are on a Disney boards), one of the runners seem to have found one…
From Canadian Running: [Sabbe] was found off-course in another town, chatting with a garbage can who he thought was a person (he’d been running for 40-plus hours at this point).

Kudos to all who attempt an Ultra, it definitely isn’t easy!

I just google that marathon, and wow, those are some interesting rules! Guess my productivity for the rest of the day is shot, since I just want to keep reading about this race.

Is the Barkley run by the same guy that does the Backyard Ultra?
Yes. Here is a wiki link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barkley_Marathons

My favorite is the registration info which includes....

"Previous racers are required to bring an additional "fee" which in the past has included things such as a white shirt, socks, or a flannel shirt, as a donation for being a non-finisher. These donations are apparently based on the current needs of Lazarus Lake at the time. Prior finishers of the marathon who return to run again must submit a pack of Camel cigarettes as part of the registration fee."

Also, here's a pretty good documentary on the race, following one of the runners.
The title sums it up well

So that's real? He really was talking to the trash can? I thought it was some kind of ironic humour

That is what was written in the article. I can easily believe that someone would be disoriented to that level after so much effort and so little sleep.

If you have been at the finish line of a large HM or a M, your probably have witnessed a number of runners not feeling 100%

Actually, word of caution to all runners: Hydration and electrolytes are very important, not to be neglected for any distance.

NY lottery is open, but the drawing is after W&D registration. The races are the same weekend. Granted my chances of getting into NY are 0.001% given my track record with that race, I don't want to throw money away with multiple registrations for races on the same weekend. Decisions decisions. I need these race organizers to coordinate to benefit ME. :rotfl2:

Orthopedic doctor cleared me to start running at 20% of my pre-injury capacity, so I am taking it very slowly... It's been killing me sitting around since Princess, but really taking a week+ off after a hard race probably has some benefit to the body. Keeping my fingers crossed I don't have any recurring issues. It would give me a lot more confidence to register for Dopey next month.

Dempsey Dash 5K, Gainesville, GA. Extrapolated time: 27.23*. First place old guy! It gets easier as you get older because eventually you're the only guy left in your age group. The award was a bow-tie.

*Unfortunately, there was confusion on the course and we didn't run a full 5K. I've never run a race where NONE of the turns were marked. My actual time: 23:27 for 2.65 miles.

A 'great' day for racing: low 30s, spitting sleet and snow (feels extra good when driven by 40 mph winds)!
