You have to remember airlines are not putting anything extra onboard that can:
a. Add more weight. Even as small and light as a Dustbuster or small broom and dustpan.
b. Has the potential to have maintenance issues and they need to constantly fix. $$$

Not on the plane. I was thinking at the gate or jetway, although I suppose ownership could be interesting.

However, it would seem pretty poor planning if there’s no room for contingencies like food on the carpet.

It always gets worked out, we aren't leaving with a disaster for the next passenger to walk over. Most of the time cabin service is coming to clean. But there are the occasions where it doesn't happen (not in a service stationed airport) so flight attendants do it. Obviously, accidents happen and we aren't talking about those.

Just my humble opinion, to help not create any delays, the kind thing to do would be to pick up after yourself and not make a big mess to begin with.

I guess that I am basing it off of being a mom and never in a million years would I let my 2 year old on a plane, in their own seat away from me. My kids were always right next to me. But maybe this is the one mom in a million that just doesn't give a crap about her kids.
If there’s only 2 seats to a row - how is she supposed to sit right next to them??? Seriously - putting the 2 little girls next to each other and then sitting across the aisle was her best option…showing that she DOES give a crap.

I get that, but the allegation made here is that a flight attendant demanded that a passenger with two children pick up the pieces. If true (and we only have one side) that would seem to be excessive.

Also, this was clearly one of their regional contractors. Not sure if they’re trained any differently.

You are both correct, @sam_gordon and @BrianL 100% a no go flight if you have all lavatories inoperable on large jets. You can go with some of them inop, but not all. With big boys going long haul, the typical rule of thumb is you can go with only half of them working. (but even 1 inoperable is a nightmare)

However, the small ones (with only 1 bathroom) can go with it inop. It is up to the carrier.
Unfortunately, they did, as it was a charter, we had access to all levels of the 747, and there was not one working lavatory on board. The flight also departed 3 hours late, as the plane was not prepped at all when we arrived at the airport. Two High School Bands, one from California (the one I was in) and one from Texas. As it was chartered, and late, maybe that is why they allowed it to fly? And it was 1976, so maybe rules changed since then? Rudest flight crew I have ver enountered...even asking for ice was an adventure. Asked for ice at one galley. crew said they were out. Went to another galley, told them we were sent there because the other galley was out of ice, and the flight attendent turned the air blue with colorful explicatives, saying she knew thay had ice, etc. That was my first and only experience with United until after the Continental merger.

The return flight was better, they broke the two bands into separate planes. although we were 7 hours late departing. again the plane had not been prepped, but at least the smaller plane has everything working.

I’m not sure how so many posters are so certain that the mom was “not watching her kids” and that this could never have happened to them because they would have intervened after one or two pieces were dropped. It seems like all are envisioning a messy eater dropping bits of popcorn over an extended period of time. How do we not know if the kid accidentally dropped the bag and that was the entire mess.

Of course it could have happened that way, but does it really matter? If it got to the point where it was spilling out into the aisle, as you can see it has, and the mom has not done anything, don't you think that the flight attendant has the right to ask her to pick it up? We are just getting the mom's version of the story, not the flight attendants. Do you not feel that people should clean up their big messes? We are not talking one or two pieces here.

I'm also assuming that the FA asked for them to clean the mess up as they were sitting in First I believe. Maybe she knew there was no cleaning in the turnaround and you don't want the next First class passenger boarding a flight with a messy First cabin.

I'm guessing she thought the odds of the oxygen masks dropping were pretty low (I agree with that), she was thinking she can get her mask on then get over to help her kids, or she didn't think about it.
If Mom was sitting across the aisle, is the cord on the O2 mask long enough for her to assist her kids, especially the one in the window seat? @fly girl

Why do you think they were sitting in First Class?

Being pregnant DOES NOT prevent you from doing things you know like traveling - any mother knows and does clean up after her kids daily pregnant or not so to say she’s pregnant like that matters ? If it did why is she traveling with two kids ? Reflects more on him than the airline - what are you teaching these kids ? What kind of attitude do you have ? His is saying a lot

Well in the case of an accidental drop, I would surely spring to my feet and start picking up. Then I would take the popcorn off the children until they were able to eat it under supervision.

This is just regular parenting stuff. This is how even mediocre parents behave to spills and food mishaps.

I watched a 3 year old get underneath the fence at a McDonald's playground on the outside walk the edge of a dropoff down to a 4 lane road when when I got mom's attention, she just turned back to her conversation with her friend. There are a lot out there that don't give a crap about their own kids. This mom isn't one in a million.
, I caught a stroller with baby inside. At busch gardens, we are walking at base of slope( think Kraft building). I just happen to see something behind me moving. I grabbed and try to give it to couple about five feet away. Not theirs. The parents were about 75 ft away, watching a show or game. Had no idea, baby stroller had rolled down the slope.

This was 45 years ago on our honeymoon.
