Indiana Jones set to be released soon

Well, they're not just successes - they are widely acclaimed. Certainly being at Lucasfilm pigeonholes her into a certian kind of movie. Despite commercial success, they have been creatively strong. A lot of the streaming woes shouldn't be laid at her feet (and she likely has nothing to due itwh the Starcruiser).

You seem to insinuate that Indy and The Acolyte are already failures - we can't possibly know that.
So the head of a studio company who's IP is being developed into an exclusive park experience, and the said studio has nothing to do with it. Yeah, I will call BS on that one.

It really fell under the Parks and WDI though. I'm sure there was consultation, but Parks & Experiences paid for it and Imagineering developed it. It's all Disney though.

Now do the last Jedi. Sometimes the stars align like in Top Gun, where it's just a great movie that ticks all the boxes for everyone.

The Last Jedi
Critics 91% (people that think like Brian)
Audience 42% (people that think like Me)

Award recognition absolutely matters in the industry whether you agree or not.
Didn't say it didn't matter, I said it doesn't make a hill of beans to the fans anymore. Give me all the awards for Andor or give me 100 million dollars of profit from the show, as a Disney investor I know what I would rather have.

Most people didn't even watch Andor, because the last few things Disney made for streaming were not good. Star Wars audiences have kind of tuned out, until you give them a reason to come back. The fan base is fractured and that fracture started with TLJ. Until you prove to the legacy fans that you respect them again, I just think most people are happy rewatching their Blue Rays of the OT.

Disney came really close to bringing them back together in Mando season two, but then went right back off the rails.

But it does make a difference on what type of content gets made going forward and where studios are willing to invest money and take chances when they see shows like that being well received universally and not just by a certain targeted demographic.

I agree with you on this. However, if Bob Iger doesn't figure out a way to get Lucasfilms to make money again, nothing else will matter. Lucasfilm needs a financial win a big way, and they need it yesterday.

But, you see, there is no "People who think like Brian." They're just people. I may agree with them on certain things and not others. Critics are not a monolith. They liked Top Gun, and I'm sure a lot of the reviewers are the same people. And, me, I didn't care for it - so it didn't check all of my boxes at all.

In this case you agree with the critics and love TLJ. In this case I agree with the fans, and think TLJ is a steaming pile of poo.

Of course this is a case by case basis film to film exercise.

For the most part on most films if the fans love it, I will love it. Not so with the critics. I align much more consistently with what the fans think.

Okay. Sometimes I do agree, sometimes I don't. That's really all I can say about it.

I’m going in with no expectations at all, except hopefully an entertaining way to wrap up the franchise. After the Star Wars movies, Raiders is my next favorite. Temple of doom was awful. I can’t stand that movie, majority of the reason being Kate Capshaw’s incessant whining through the whole thing . Ruined it. Last Crusade I like as much as the first one. I find myself rewatching it any time it’s on. Crystal Skull was pretty bad, but not as bad as 2. So maybe since this is an odd numbered film, it’ll be good. I liked the main actress on Fleabag, so hoping she’ll be a great addition. I’ll be seeing this one at the movies.

Man, Temple of Doom is my favorite one! Yeah, Willie is sort of annoying, but you know, when you're hooking-up with the director.... 🤣 The opening scene with the Anything Goes musical number is one of the best movie scenes of all time!

I actually think Last Crusade is overrated - it's too long. I think I like Crystal Skull more actually. :duck:

I really liked the first 3 but the last crusade the least of that bunch. Didn't care the crystal skull much at all. I hope this one is good, but am concerned based on the early info online about it. Maybe it will be a wonderful surprise!

She has made Star Wars more profitable with the sequels than George Lucas did with the prequels. But as noted, keeping any old IP alive is a monumental task... keeping nostalgic for fans of the original while making it accessible for new generations.
Somewhat true, but not exactly. Based on the amount of investment made on the Lucas based films the prequels were the better return on investment. Based on total dollars you are correct, Disney wins.

Disney:

Sequels
- #7 The Forces Awakens made 8.44 times its budget at the box office
- #8 The Last Jedi made 4.20 times its budget at the box office
- #9 The Rise of Skywalker made 3.92 times its budget at the box office

- Rogue One made 5.28 times its budget at the box office
- Solo made only 1.43 times its budget at the box office (likely lost a ton of money)

Lucas:

Original Trilogy
- #4 A New Hope made 70.49 times its budget at the box office
- #5 The Empire Strikes Back made 29.91 times its budget at the box office
- #6 Return of the Jedi made 14.62 times its budge at the box office

Prequels
- #1 The Phantom Menace made 8.93 times its budget
- #2 Attack of the clones made 5.65 times its budget
- #3 Revenge of the Sith made 7.51 times its budget

Keep in mind that the box office isn't the only way a film makes money - in fact it is the smallest percentage. It's just a good indicator of a films overall earning potential. You wouldn't think it, but television rights make the most - Disney makes a boat-load off showings on TNT!

Also, the box-office landscape back during the OT was very different. Theatrical windows were much longer.

Your going to need to teach me how the box office haul is the "smallest percentage" of how a film makes money. Especially now that they just dump it all on Disney+, which is losing money. Not sure I have ever heard anyone say that.

Merchandising is huge for Star Wars no doubt, as it remember every kid when I was young yearning for a Tie Fighter, or X-wing, or my rich cousin had the Falcon! Don't see the same demand for the Disney ST merchandise, but there are also way more people now than then, so maybe so.

Are those just the original release numbers? Or do they include re-releases?

It has changed over the years, and I couldn't find anything for the streaming era, but in 2014 TV rights made up the largest percentage of a film's revenue. Prior to that it had been physical sales when the DVD market was super-hot. The fact is though that the TV rights still make up a significatn portion of total revenue and stations like TNT & USA pay a lot of money for these rights.
