AT&T Outage

Interesting timing here in California as A-T & T is trying to shutdown landline service. I checked my Verizon phone, no issue. Oh, and my landline is fine too! Given what happened during the wildfires in the Santa Rosa area, where cell towers burned down and went off line, but buried landlines were unaffected, not sure how we can safely eliminate landlines.

I’m still getting text messages but have not received any phone calls, not really unusual as I had a talking marathon yesterday. Calling a friend now. She answered and says she’s been having intermittent problems connecting calls.

I may have spoken too soon about having no issues on my phone. It just lost service and says "emergency calls only." My wife has an iPhone, and has been without service all morning. I have an Android and just lost service.
Curious as to where you are? Luckily, DH Android phone is still fine.

We held on to our landline for years, but it kept going out. Would take 2 weeks to repair, only to go out again. The phone companies have no interest in repairing, short sighted if you ask me.

We're all down around Chicago. Does this make anyone else want to get a landline back? I hate not being able to reach my elderly mom (also gave up her land line) or DH and DD. Reminds me how fragile things really are! I'm not saying land lines are infallible, but if you had both, you'd most likely be able to use one.
One reason why we still have our POTS line (plain old telephonic service) as ATT calls it. 53 years in our house never an interruption of service. For cell, Verizon here, no issues currently.

Alabama here.

How can the phone companies afford to maintain the land lines when very few people have them?

Offering landline phone service is a money losing proposition.

I think a lot of services are dependent on those copper landlines. I have "fiber" internet but it uses copper phonelines from my house to the fiber hub.
Oh, in their proposal to eliminate landlines, ATT admits, they still make money on the service. So they can afford it.

I can go online and text while at home on WiFi (haven’t tried any phone calls). I went out for breakfast and couldn’t get on the internet, and I’m assuming wouldn’t have been able to text but didn’t try. It did say sos while I was out.

Oddly one person I went out with also has AT&T and an iPhone (like me). She could get on the internet and got a phone call while we were there. I’m not big into technology but that was very strange to me. We live about 5 miles apart and were in the same spot. Why would hers work but not mine?

Yeah probably in a large urban area where they have plenty of customers they are still making money. In the more rural areas. No way they are making money. They will play games and not repair their equipment in a timely manner o push people away from landlines.

Their filing says they still make money on landlines, but yes, they wants to get out of the "must provide service" classification the law now has them under. The issue the PUC has to sort out is getting service to customers who have no other option.....places where there is no cell service.

Older sister’s phones (landline and cell, one AT&T, other Verizon) are both working in Westchester.

Imagine if this problem weren't in terms of hours, but rather days or weeks. Could our so-called modern society function? What if one of our national adversaries sees this as a way to cripple the country? People are annoyed now because it's believed this outage is only short term. How would people react if this type of problem were to be long term?

Younger sister’s cell is taking messages. Not sure if she’s in NYC or NC right now.

My iphone on AT&T was out all morning but started working a couple minutes ago.

My work iphone on Verizon had no issues today.

In Maryland, no issues w/ either iphone or Android.
My folks, in southern FL ironically just got new phones and switched from AT & T to Verizon and switched over their phones this morning. No issues there either.

Just imagine if cell phone and wifi service were down in the parks? How could we function? We couldn't get food as Disney can't handle everyone ordering at the counter in 2024.
