Disney is filling in pools and such at River Country to prevent mosquitoes from spreading Zika in the area."

@TheRustyScupper

Heard anything about this? Seems a little silly given most of the state is a big swamp, but if they feel RC is a little more "stagnant" than the rest of the state :-))), I guess it makes sense.

Can't see how filling in the pools will help. As you said, the whole state is basically standing water.

It could be that there are mosquitos in that immediate area that carry Zika. Not all types of mosquitos will spread the virus, and the ones that do some are more likely to feed on people whereas some feed on people and animals making it less likely that they will spread the virus to people. So for example if they have found that the area around River Country is a breeding ground for the Aedes aegypti mosquito then they would want to fill those pools in regardless if all of FL is standing water or not, as those are the most dangerous mosquitos when it comes to Zika (and other viruses)

It was a joke, but good answer though and point taken. However there are lots of places on the whole of Fort Wilderness that can be havens for the Aedes aegypti including lots of canals that wind through the campsites all across the campground.

Still haven't heard from anybody on site if this is actually happening. Disney would have to sink a lot more than just some dumptrucks to pull this off. They would have to clear a way to the pools through the old slides and rock facades to get to the pools. Sounds like a big undertaking to only fill in a small area when there are lots of other areas within stones throw of it that are just as prone.

The story made the DIS News: http://www.wdwinfo.com/news-stories...untry-water-park-being-drained-and-filled-in/

"Disney said this project has been in the works for awhile, but that there are no other plans to tear down the rest of the water park. They also said the work is not related to the ongoing Zika virus threat, though standing water is generally known to attract mosquitoes, some of which carry the virus."

Sure. I believe them.

:sad2:

Okay, from the articles information I can see filling it in for safety purposes such as a child drowning or something along those lines, but not for mosquitoes. I mean the lower pool (the larger one) would be a much greater threat if it was done worrying about mosquitoes.

Disney has guest safety as their highest priority. That's why they reacted with such speed and responsiveness 15 years after River Country closed.

Tiggerdad, you are too cynical...

I don't really like the sound of this. I get a little anxious every time the Disney suits give River Country even a cursory glance. It's a line of defense against development in my mind.

Brother, you are too RIGHT for your own good.

Your old pix of your wanderings back into River Country will become photo gold - can you link in that thread or repost those? Now that it's gonna be a dirt pile we should capture for history what it USED to look like.

My kids always wanted to go back there but I was too follow-the-rules. Finding the remaining Fort Wilderness Railroad steel rails were one thing - tramping around RC was another.

Please post a link or those pix.

Aight Ed, here ya go,

I never actually broke any rules to get these pictures, just utilized the available terrain outside the fence to get a view over it.

Some of these are from November 2014 and others from October 2015

I love the button!!!!!!
I have watched the Fort's pest control CM's doing mosquito control many times when we were there, not just at the Fort. They use a natural form of larvae control. They look like hockey pucks. They chunk them in standing water pools. It does the job. But with all the water standing on the property, it's an impossible job. "Hey it's Florida". The mosquito could be our state bird...... RC will be developed into something. I just hope it's no time soon.

42 days till the Fort......

Disney just announced that they will be giving out free repellent in order to be abundantly cautious as zika creeps closer to Orlando. It was on WDW news I believe.

The last thing Disney wants is a news story about a pregnant woman coming down with Zika at WDW. Handing out free repellent is a smart CYA move.

Has anyone else besides me noticed that one of the posters here seems to be very familiar with the overall present condition of, locations from which the facility can be observed, while he has limited sharing his photographic documentation They do reveal in some detail the status of the place. It just leads me to question, when coupled with his his objections to altering it Have we been shown hiding in plain view the Double Secret Covert Headquarters and Training Camp of THE NSS.

It's on the backside of the rock facade. If you like, I can get you admittance when next you visit.

Fill it with cement? Seems a bit much when dirt is so much cheaper and easier to work with to fill in a hole. Oh well, thanks for the link. It has some good pics on it.

The Orlando Sentinel article doesn't actually say concrete, at least that I saw when I skimmed it. Concrete would make no sense because it would just add a huge cost upstream when you were trying to develop the land.
