Enjoying Cabana Bay First Impressions

This is my first stay at a Universal hotel and my first trip to Universal Studios Orlando. I am a dedicated Disney fan and well just found myself out of the Disney prices for this 14 day trip. So after looking around and finding the "stay more, save more" rate for Cabana Bay Beach Resort decided to give it a go. I also enjoy Harry Potter so thought a Universal annual pass would be a good idea since I am here for 14 days.

First impressions - I love the hotel. For the price (something like $85/night) absolutely cannot be beat IMO- anywhere in Orlando that I am aware - and I have lived in Orlando for almost a year back in 2011 and stayed in several different hotels in the area. One of the things I was annoyed about in choosing a Universal hotel was the charge for parking. However, upon check in, they gave me a discount of half price parking since I was staying for so long. This made me really grateful as it was a sore point for me. Good job on that one Universal! Excellent customer service! After checking in, I went to the Attractions ticket desk at the hotel and picked up my preferred annual pass which I had paid for online - easy breezy. Another customer service plus. I also went to the gift shop and put some money on a Universal gift card to use for dining and shopping. It has worked very well and I will definitely do this again - really helps to manage money when I didn't want to put the $1,400 hold on my credit card for room charging.

Room quality - The room quality is a great value. It feels even better in person than the photos. The bed is super comfortable and I have slept great from day one. Way more comfortable than other budget priced hotels I have stayed at - including Disney ones. The room size is good value - queen beds and the bathroom has a little bit more space than some. The sheets are also comfy - not at all scratchy. Plus the aircon/heating is super quiet - hardly noticeable when it comes on. Universal did a nice job on this hotel! Well done! I will definitely book again.

Amenities - So far I have used the lazy river and pool including the pool side movies. The weather is a bit chilly but the pools are warm and I have enjoyed taking an afternoon/evening swim since arriving. There are plenty of towels, which was really helpful last night when it was so cold - definitely needed a pile to get warm. It was really nice to have what we needed - a lot of us wrapped up like mummies waiting for the Harry Potter pool side movie to start. I purchased a tube for about $10 which I thought was well worth it as it is huge and a nice souvenir saying "Cabana Beach Resort". I haven't eaten at the food court yet.

In relation to the other Universal hotels - since I haven't stayed at them - don't know but as far as convenience goes, the bus transportation is good from Cabana Bay. In the future I may choose Sapphire Falls for the water taxi - it does make a difference IMO - and it is a bit of a walk from Cabana Bay to Sapphire falls along the garden path and when my feet are hurting I don't often choose it so take the bus which requires one to go through the Universal garage area - not a deal breaker but noticeable.

All in all - I would stay here again in a heartbeat. In fact it could easily become my go to resort in Orlando. First I need to try Sapphire Falls - I suppose - or at least some of the other Universal hotels. Highly recommend for good value the "stay more, save more" rate.

Thank you for sharing your experience at Cbay

I'm sure many will enjoy your impressions of the hotel

I do have a simple question for you....

Another homie posted a couple of weeks ago and asked if anyone at Cbay could measure the dimensions of the counter/table in the room

She plans to bring a large puzzle for her family to work on during down time in the room
And she needs to buy a puzzle that would fit

I know this is asking a lot but if you have any free time, could you help out?

Sure - my guesstimate - estimate with a piece of 8 1/2" by 11" paper is 28 inches diameter for the round table - could be thirty but not really sure. The dresser seems to be about 6 ft by 2 ft plus there is a tv flat screen and coffee maker - single cup - on the dresser. Hope that helps!

Hi @ExpatDisneyLover - I stayed at both Cabana Bay (Family Suite) and Sapphire Falls on a solo trip about a month ago. Your experience is similar to mine. I did not like the bus service from Cabana Bay and having to go through security in the parking garage area. Much preferred taking the water taxi during the SF part of my stay.

That being said, I LOVED everything else about Cabana Bay. It's such a FUN vibe, great price (I think I paid $109 for a Courtyard Poolside Family Suite), absolutely loved the Family Suite and the separate living room area. When I was at Sapphire Falls, I was wishing my entire stay had been at Cabana Bay!

Oh and by the way, I'm the one @macraven was trying to help with the dimensions of the island in the kitchenette. Based on your description, it sounds like you aren't in a Family Suite, though!

Enjoy the rest of your stay!

Are you still there? I took the SF water taxi back several times - just follow everyone into SF, walk up the stairs to the lobby, exit out the front and cross the street to CBBR. There is no crosswalk at the light, but I managed to cross the street OK. Shorter than the garden path!

Hi - yeah I am still here. Thanks for the tip! I find that I often take the bus one way and the water taxi the other way - seems to help the feet!

Nice to hear about your trip! :) I was kind of wishing I had done a split stay between the two. Yeah I do like the vibe at Cabana Bay - and the room is soooo comfortable IMO! I keep saying to myself - "I love this hotel!" I don't say that about many hotels - maybe Animal Kingdom Lodge but other than that can't think of any. About the dimensions - sorry yeah I am in a standard tower room - only a round table and dresser here. But hope you can find out what you need. Enjoy your future trips!

Just to let people know they have signs posted between SF and CB telling you to use the garden path and not the street. Remember, that is a direct road to and from the highway. There can be some people not paying attention, taking photos, and run you over.

Yes, you are right, there are signs instructing people to take the garden path rather than crossing at the intersection. I don't find the garden path too bothersome - just use the water taxi once in awhile. But I may just stay at Sapphire Falls next time - just for the water taxi!

how far would you say the walk in on the garden path. only reference know is portion to the city walk or portafino to hard rock hotel. or ????

Hmmm - well for me - almost 50 year old lady - ehem - 10 minutes to Sapphire Falls. Since I am in Americana at Cabana Bay - (almost at Volcano Bay) - the walk to the other side of the resort takes 5 minutes. From there the path to Sapphire Falls is about 5 minutes - so 10 total - not a biggie but if you have feet that need TLC - noticeable. If you were going all the way to City Walk - I'd say 20-30 minutes - for me definitely 30 minutes.

It took me (54 year old lady) 16 minutes to walk from the IOA gate to the corner of CBBR by the garden path. I was also in Americana, it took another 4 minutes to get there, so 20 for me total.

We tried to clock all three travel options and came to the following conclusion. Times vary slightly depending on the wait for transportation to arrive and possible loading of wheel chairs, but only by a few minutes. The overall average for measuring CB lobby to park entrance was 30 minutes for walking, shuttle bus, walking to SF and taking water taxi. We just took whatever way fancied our moods after a while instead of trying to be economical about it.

Yeah - it is nice there is more than one option to choose from. I was at Animal Kingdom yesterday and Magic Kingdom the day before - yikes the crowds - I loved it but whoa the people. I came home to the restful quiet of Cabana Bay - no bus ride, walk or water taxi will ever seem too long when I compare it to navigating huge seas of people as I did yesterday.
