California Grill Solo

I'm going to be in Orlando the end of May for a convention. Looks like I will have a free night on a Tuesday and would love to try getting a seat at the bar to have dinner and maybe try some sushi too. Do you need to check in at the reception desk if you're just going to the bar? Is it tough for a solo guest to get a seat if it's an hour or so before fireworks?

I would suggest geting an ADR and then when you get there ask if you can sit at the bar. If it's busy they might not let you up.
I did this a couple years ago and it worked out great, met some people at the bar and shared some sushi.

Yes, that would make sure you could go up. Once you get there you can request a seat at the bar instead. Get there as early as you can to better the odds for what you want.
That was what I did and they were very nice.

Thanks!!!

So make an ADR for a regular table?

I did it. I had a stressful year of teaching and qualified to be hired as a continuing contract teacher so I was celebrating that. I wasn't seated near the window (which I was thankful for because it was lightning something awful and they opened all the blinds to the restaurant). I didn't feel awkward at all. I just wanted to make sure I got a spot in this restaurant. I'm not a bar person.

When I ate solo at CG, I pointed out to the check-in desk that I was solo, and would appreciate a table with "a nice view of something to help me pass the time". They gave me a seat at the window, where I could watch the monorail, etc. throughout the meal. Just another suggestion.

I should do that next time I was there. Where I was sitting could be awkward for a solo traveler, as I was arms length to a young couple who may or may not have been celebrating an engagement or something. I was too caught up in my own solo celebration to feel uncomfortable.

I have an ADR to California Grill (among others) for my solo trip upcoming. I am really looking forward to it. DW and I took our niece there several years ago. It was a wonderful, though expensive, experience. I expect no more and no less going solo.

IF you go early, you can eat at the CG bar w/o a reservation. As long as there is room, no problem letting you up. IT's a great place for a meal for a solo traveler.

There are 18 seats at the bar--meaning an hour before the fireworks they will all be full and if you show up w/o a reservation, they won't let you in.

And if all the bar seats are taken, you won't get to sit there even WITH a reservation.

We've eaten at the bar at 5:00 or so the last 4 trips--always gotten in with no problem. Keep in mind we have no desire to see the fireworks from the restaurant, so going early is not a problem--for us.
