We never do park hoppers, just the base. This year we are going Dec 16-23 and I think the park hoppers might come in handy (plus with free dining they are required). Please share why you like them and the best tips on getting the most advantage from them.

We like them because... PARK HOPPING!!! :)

You can plan your first half of the day and be a little more spontaneous the second half... feel like leaving MK to go to Epcot?! Sure! Why not? :)

Gotta be multiple threads about this. My opinion is that getting full value is staying at a resort within walking distance or even monorail relationship to a park.
I use hoppers to take advantage of am emh, and then bug out if the park gets crowded from ppl who have to stay there. We rope drop park a, and then hop to park b after a swim break. We'd stay at an epcot area place so we could then walk or boat to Epcot or Hollywood which doesn't eat up a lot of travel time for park b. It's so nice to know your max travel time to your room is 15 minutes, sometimes even with a stop for ice cream at Ample Hills. I also like to be able to go to World Showcase for snacks, dinner, concerts, or street shows essentially anytime on any day. It's also nice to be able to hop to any park b for the nighttime show at any time it fits into your plan of attack.

Primarily, however, we rope drop park a, (especially for am emh,) then hop to park b for a relaxed evening tour.

I thought about this, myself. I bought base tickets for Jan 18, and now i'm thinking, what if I want to hop?

I noticed that on Jan 2, 2017, MK was still open until midnight. Now there's no guarantee that it'll be the same in 2018, but I had planned that as my HS day. HS closed at 7 on the same night. What if I'm still awake and want to do something? Without hoppers, I'm resort hopping or heading to DS (which are still very magical options, I may add) (ugh, I'm sounding like a CM). With hoppers, I can, instead, head to Epcot which closes at 9, then hop to MK which closes at 11, or just head to MK, watch Wishes Happily Ever After, ride a few rides for a couple hours, then go back to the hotel room.

Basically, hoppers open up options to do more at Disney.

People have already hit the highlights I think. For us, we rope drop a park and then head back to the resort around 11-12 when it gets crowded. Grab lunch and hang out at the pool (or nap), then grab dinner wherever and head to another park in the evening. This allows us to relax, not fight crowds during the busiest parts of the park day, eat wherever sounds good, and then go to a different park in the evening if we want. Hoppers are much more enjoyable though if you can walk/monorail to a park (so staying at a deluxe) because excessive use of Disney buses can really make for a ton of travel time.

My biggest advice is don't try to find places to hop, it does take time to hop but you have a lot of flexibility when the day isn't going your way and doing different parks in the day and night on the same day with your resort break in the middle can be a nice way to do certain things you love a lot without having to spend most of your time at a specific park kind of bored and waiting for that something special..

In the past they have come in handy for the following:
- we just weren't into the park and kind of bored so we switched parks.
- the crowd was annoying and just too crowded at a park so we took a chance and switched (almost always pays off).
- that park was miserable for what turned into an all day rain instead of 20 minute rain so we got to one that was more friendly to rain with larger selection of indoor queues and rides.
- we were going to a park to find the longest bus line we've ever seen and nobody in line for another park so we switched parks to find a very empty park.
- my daughter with her anxiety can't always handle a full day so we generally do a half day strategy where the park we are before the mid after noon break may not be the same one we end of after the break..
- sometimes another park is still opened when 1 closes and we're not ready to call it a night...
- we just want to eat in specific places and it didn't fit where we were in the mood for so we'll go in for a lunch or breakfast somewhere and hop to another park the rest of the day... or we just couldn't get an adr at another time..
- in the mood for specific rides 1 last time the last day and running into all the different parks just for that 1 ride in each park we wanted.
- jumping in just for a specific night show that you couldn't fit into your schedule any other way.

Where it can very quickly be a waste of time
- ignoring the time it takes to hop to jump around between all different parks and resorts for food. you can easily spend the entire evening just getting to dinner and back for example.
- blindly changing parks hoping for better crowds without looking at wait times or anything before you change and walking into a worse crowd.
- finding places to hop for no reason except that your discount required you to buy hoppers... always have another reason other than you have the tickets you want to use them.

Thanks everyone. I like the mid afternoon break ideas. We are going in Dec and I would like to hit EMH then leave around 11-12 and go to a resort that will be decorated for Christmas and to grab lunch. Then head back to the same park afterward or do a park with EMH. I have 4 or 5 resorts on our list of "have to see for Christmas". We hardly ever go to the resorts in Oct, so I think it will be a nice change and slower pace for us.

Do you think this plan would work well at Christmas time Dec 16-23?

This is the perfect way to use Hoppers, and it will work.

IMO, Hoppers are wasted on people who sleep in every day because you have already lost park time in the morning and you lose at least an hour of park time when hopping. But they can be a huge advantage to rope droppers. You actually gain ride time by taking advantage of the least busy time in 2 different parks - the earliest and latest hours that they are open. Just remember to plan your FP around your hopping plans. It stinks to have FP for the afternoon in a park and not be able to hop away from the park if you so desire. To avoid this, save your FP for your second park of the day when you plan to hop.

Yes, I think it would work fine. We did somewhat similar things when we were there for Xmas 2015. We stay offsite, so we don't do EMH. But we had days where we hit a park in the morning, checked out a resort in early afternoon and went to another park later.

For us hoppers are all about flexibility. With very limited exceptions like 4th of July or Xmas Day, we really don't avoid any park at any time because of crowds. It just doesn't bother us. However, we love to do "freestyling". For example, we may have our FP+ plans in Epcot for a given morning. The FP+ times are 10am, 11am and noon. So we get to Epcot around 9:30am (we're not rope drop people) and ride a bunch of things, eat lunch and then we're in "freestyle" time. Spur of the moment we may decide to head back to our condo or head to another park. Park hoppers allow us to do that. Even on days we head back to the condo, sometimes after a shower and a bit of chill time, we'll look at each other and say "Let's go to HS for a few hours". So we can spontaneously pick up and go. Love it, wouldn't have it any other way.

As mentioned above, you can go to a different park bascially for its nightitme show/fireworks. this can come in handy if you get rained out the night you had first planned to go to that show, and all your other park days are already booked (FP+) for other parks.

The vast majority of our WDW visits we stay at BoardWalk or S/D during Food & Wine so our strategy is to hit a park at RD then hop to WS and Graze Around the World. In the evening we'll stroll to DHS or catch Illuminations. Couldn't do that without hoppers.

I've done it both with and without hoppers. For me it depends on who I'm with. If its just me and DH, especially if we have a shorter trip and want to see everything we want, it's great. If I have my kids with me, I don't buy hoppers. My kids do not have that much stamina. They prefer park touring, then they are ready to be done and have a resort/swim break. IF I can get them to go back, we can always find enough food/entertainment at the park we visited earlier that day. We also usually go to Disney Springs 1-2 times each trip in the evenings, no hoppers needed for that

I have two kids - will be 7 and 2 when we go again. We have always done hoppers. For many reasons.
1. I am not so into ridiculous crowds, so if a day gets too crazy - we go somewhere else
2. If I want to eat dinner at a park different from the one that I want to visit that day
3. If we are "done" at a park and want to try something else we don't feel that we have to stay because we can come back
4. My husband and kids are so done by dinner time. Most of the time I go back out by myself after they are settled into bed/relaxing, and I can hop to whatever park I want.

Lots of pluses (and some years we didn't get them so it's not like we always had them) but the biggest for YOU is with the DINING PLAN it gives you the option of eating anywhere at anytime. You could spend all your days at other parks but have dinner every night at Epcot where many good eats are.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I hadn't even given a thought to the fastpasses, yikes. I like the idea of making them for our jump to a nighttime emh park after doing the morning emh and then leaving to do a resort Christmas decorations/lunch.

For the mid day break, how long does it usually take to get back into a park? I could only get ADR for CRT for 4pm one day. I'm not sure when I have to leave my resort (CBR) to get to my dinner reservation. In general how bad are the lines around 2-3pm for park entry (not just MK)?
