Matt's 40th Birthday Disneyland Trip. Club 33, Napa Rose, and Adventureland Suite!!!

I really enjoy your posts. It's like being there, but with someone to make me slow down and appreciate all the little details. :)

Its refreshing to just take a step back and appreciate things. Everybody is rush here, rush there. When I'm at Disneyland I prefer to take it all in. The immersive environment is like nowhere else.

I also love Toon Town (especially if I have little kids with me) and all its details, and will be really sad if they ever decide to get rid of it. I liked a Bug's Land too (for the awesome theming) but would probably miss Toon Town more.

Agree. It's kind of sad that TDA is losing site of these areas in the name of promoting the latest IP.

Our second courses arrived not too much later. Amy would have Asparagus and Wild Mushrooms paired with a Burgundy. Perhaps not the most memorable of dishes, the green garbanzo hummus was a bright compliment to the meatiness of the mushroom and the asparagus was perfectly cooked. The cashews provided a nice crunch factor. A well-balanced dish, even if it wasn't a show-stopper.

IMG_8365%20(Large).jpg

I had Tempura-fried Lobster with spicy fillet, Asian Greens, and Coconut-Lime Vinaigrette paired with a Chianti Classico by Nozzole. This is essentially the Smiling Tiger Salad. It's amazing regardless of being not entirely original. That wonderful tempura-coated lobster is crispy and sweet. The Vinaigrette providing some acid which helps to temper the slightly bitter greens with the crunch of sliced jicama. Lying in wait for you underneath the salad, a delightfully tender and flavorful cut of well-spiced beef. It's an amazing dish I would order off the menu at any time.

IMG_8363%20(Large).jpg

For our third course, we had some even more amazing treats headed our way. Amy was presented with Veal Sweetbreads over Lobster Orecchiette paired with a Cabernet Sauvignon by Faust. This dish is the very reason we go in with an open mind and a willingness to enjoy whatever is placed in front of us. Never would Amy have chosen sweetbreads off a menu, but they were delicious. Add in a delicate lobster sauce and this dish was a win. I being a fan of sweetbreads thoroughly enjoyed the single spoonful I was offered... yum! The creamy and savoriness of the dish was astounding. I wish it was on the menu.

IMG_8369%20(Large).JPG

DSC_0226%20(Large).jpg

I was presented with what I have to say may just have been the best single dish I've ever eaten...King Crab over Uni and Mushroom Risotto topped with Black Truffle. Talk about SAVORY and SWEET and DELICOUSNESS..... The King Crab was massive, tender, and sweet while possessing a substantial meatiness to the leg portion. The Uni Risotto had a briny creaminess which was simply amazing and the wild Mushrooms and shaved Black Truffle just set it off with an amazing OOMPH and some earthiness which complimented the dish and surprisingly didn't overwhelm. I cannot remember what it was paired with other than it was Red, and Italian... Maybe... I was simply in too much ecstasy to compose myself to jot it down.

IMG_8370%20(Large).JPG

Between each course it was fun to just observe the operations of the kitchen.

DSC_0227%20(Large).jpg

Amy enjoying that delicious Faust Cab..

DSC_0232%20(Large).jpg

Much debate was had over this pan. At first I thought it bacon. Then maybe dried fruit. We neglected to ask and may never know...

DSC_0240%20(Large).jpg

I spy some duck... I'm hoping said dish finds me later in the dining experience..

DSC_0247%20(Large).jpg

DSC_0251%20(Large).jpg

Admiring the rose motifs which make their way into every part of the decorating of the restaurant. The flower arraignment, the ceiling sconces, the inlay in the mosaic tile, everything.

DSC_0254%20(Large).jpg

Such a beautiful and elegant place to have a meal..

DSC_0267%20(Large).jpg

Amy was having a great time.

DSC_0257%20(Large).jpg

Who wouldn't be after that much wine?

DSC_0262%20(Large).jpg

Life hadn't been particularly great for me for a long time. This was a night I truly felt happy and the weight of the world lifted. It might have been the wine, it might have been the food, it might have been the company, but I was truly happy for once.

Our main courses were to be presented shortly, however while we waited, some fun action was happening in the kitchen..

Al little flambé action going on.

DSC_0276%20(Large).jpg

I regret to say I did NOT ask what this cut what. It has a nice fat cap and the cut was rolled and tied to give it a nice round shape for even cooking and fat rendering. Whatever it was, it looks AMAZING!!!

DSC_0288%20(Large).jpg

Finally, our Main courses had arrived. Amy was to have a grilled Prime-grade New York strip from Creekstone Farms served over Fava Beans, Onion Fondue, and a Mustard Crème and paired with a Bone Marrow Fritter. The steak perfectly cooked medium rare as every steak should be was tender, and flavorful as only a strip cut can be. A lot of beef flavor present compared to the fatty lusciousness of a Ribeye that is. The Onion Fondue paired well with the beef as onions tend to do and the Mustard Crème supplied a bit of a kick if so desired. The Bone Marrow Fritter I personally felt was a little bit of a let-down. We are huge bone marrow fans and was expecting something a little more unctuous. It was light and tasted of essence of beef, but when you say BONE MARROW Fritter, I expect more bone marrow. Just my personal opinion. Amy liked it, and there was very little for me to sample. As far as drinks go....I can't recall what either of us had. Red and delicious I would assume...

DSC_0289%20(Large).jpg

I was to have Roasted Duck with Pheasant Sausage over Baby Carrots, Peas, and Green Garbanzo Hummus. I had been watching serving after serving of duck come out of the kitchen that evening longing to have it as one of my courses and here I was with it. The Duck, perfect. I am a huge Goose and Duck fan. The meat has a hint of gaminess, is pretty much all dark and fatty, and the fat layer and skin crispiness when cooked properly makes it to DIE FOR. I may have discarded my utensils at the end and went caveman on it. OOOPS. The Pheasant sausage was only just OK. I expected more out of it honestly, and while I knew it was the dark meat of a avian, it could have well just have been spiced chicken thigh. That didn't do it for me. The root veggies accompanied roasted poultry perfectly as they always do and the bean puree and peas did as well. All in all, a VERY well executed dish. Favorite part... the skin as always. YUM!!!

DSC_0292%20(Large).jpg

This is the face that Amy makes when she realizes we are 80% of the way through our meal at such a fine restaurant.. I echo that sentiment.

DSC_0295%20(Large).jpg

Hidden grin for when the wine kicks in.

DSC_0304%20(Large).jpg

This was my FB selfie of the night. It looks it.

IMG_8374%20(Large).jpg

All of the food looks very unique and tasty! Since I'm not overly adventurous, the strip steak looked like it might be my favorite. What a fun experience. I'm sorry life hasn't been very pleasant for you lately, but I'm glad that wonderful meal could bring some happiness!

We took a little pause after the main course. It was quite a bit to take in and we were still savoring it even after it was eaten. We had accumulated some excess wine glasses as well which needed drinking. When we were finally ready, we signaled and our two desserts. We were promptly presented with two delicious dishes..

Amy would get a Creamy Chocolate Donut Cake with Caramelized Bananas and a Lemon Reduction garnished with a Lemon peel. Hers was paired with a Madeira. I must say we appreciate Madeiras and Marsalas and cook with them often but seldom drink them. I must admit a Madeira might have not been the best accompaniment for that dish. I honestly would have gone a tawny port instead.

IMG_8381%20(Large).jpg

I would have a round of Pistachio-Crusted French Toast over Syruped Strawberries and topped with Strawberry Sorbet with dehydrated slices of Strawberry on top. They even piped on Happy Birthday in Chocolate.. Mine was paired with a Sauternes of unknown origin or vintner. I must say both Amy and I really like Sauternes for celebratory dessert wines. They have an oily, almost kerosene-like mouth-feel finish (for those who have ever felt kerosene which is a dying breed in this day and age, you'll know what I'm talking about). It was sweet, decadent greatness...

IMG_8384%20(Large).jpg

While we were working on dessert, Rodney offered to take a few pics for us. These situations and pictures of me don't happen very often.

DSC_0307%20(Large).jpg

DSC_0312%20(Large).jpg

A pic like this has not ever been posted online, and doesn't even exist outside of our wedding photos. You are in select company to even be seeing these..

DSC_0314%20(Large).jpg

DSC_0315%20(Large).jpg

Yeah, we had a laugh after. We don't really do PDAs.

DSC_0323%20(Large).jpg

The face Amy makes when Rodney tells us they'll be closing soon.

DSC_0336%20(Large).jpg

Kitchen is done!!

DSC_0340%20(Large).jpg

So I noticed this. A stack of well-separated copper pans and bunch of high-end cooking oils... Sutton's private stash? We may never know.

DSC_0341%20(Large).jpg

Pastry Chef's night is never done...

DSC_0344%20(Large).jpg

The Restaurant was all but deserted by now and we got to appreciate it in all its glory. I love this as a dining destination. It is hands down the best meal on property food-wise (Even better than C33 surprisingly). I love the big three, (Napa, C33, SH55... sorry Carthay, you don't make the cut) and would dine at each this trip and had a REMARKABLE meal at each.

DSC_0351%20(Large).jpg

DSC_0363%20(Large).jpg

I even got a birthday button!!

DSC_0366%20(Large).jpg

Amy got some after-dinner coffee... can't recall if I had any.

DSC_0372%20(Large).jpg

That's some pretty epic side-eye

DSC_0392%20(Large).jpg

And our little treats to go (would give them to the kids for treats).

DSC_0379%20(Large).jpg

Napa was done with us... we didn't have to go home, but we couldn't stay there.

DSC_0398%20(Large).jpg

Finally, we paid the check ($420 after tip for anybody interested in what Chef's counter plus wine pairings costs for a couple..... OUCH!!! But what a meal… maybe the best meal of my life) and started to make our way back to the hotel... but not before we snagged the roses to go!)

DSC_0404%20(Large).jpg

I just LOVE the Grand late at night or early in the morning. It's my favorite of any Disney hotel I've ever been in and really feels like home.

DSC_0418%20(Large).jpg

We made the roses a home on our bathroom counter. They would last till we moved rooms to the Adventureland suite on Friday morning.

03/21/2018. Morning started out EARLY. EMH was at 07:00 which meant an early rise and shine especially as Amy and I didn't get back into the room until 11ish the night before. We got everybody up and going after a bit and were cruising through the security checkpoint at 06:32.

It was DARK

DSC_0427%20(Large).jpg

We put Katherine to work pushing her sisters. She was rocking that Grand Californian Hoodie she love so much.

DSC_0428%20(Large).jpg

Esplanade was pretty empty which we were glad to see.

DSC_0438%20(Large).jpg

Trying to pull the family together and get them excited. Victoria wasn't having at first...

DSC_0449%20(Large).jpg

Then she started to warm up..

DSC_0450%20(Large).jpg

I have to say, there's just something extremely magical about Disneyland very early or very late when there are little to no people around. Feels like you have the whole park to yourselves.

DSC_0452%20(Large).jpg

DSC_0454%20(Large).jpg

We had done well with our early rising and were the first in line at our particular turnstile.

DSC_0456%20(Large).jpg

By 06:55, it was finally starting to lighten up and the kids were starting to actually get some excitement going. (except for surly 11-year old going on 16 Katherine)

DSC_0458%20(Large).jpg

Char was getting her groove on.

DSC_0461%20(Large).jpg

And instead of Hulk-Smash Victoria we had pleasant Banner-Toria.

DSC_0471%20(Large).jpg

Rope drop happened in an instant, and we high-tailed it down Buena Vista Street, hung a left onto Hollywood Blvd, a quick right onto Sunset, and rolled up to Guardians as our first attraction of the day.

These guys were a recent addition to Tivan's collection.

DSC_0474%20(Large).jpg

Victoria always makes sure her paw... I mean hand scans.

DSC_0483%20(Large).jpg

Most of those look like they would really hurt to get hit with.

I just loved the narrow Depth of Field on this shot.. and the beetle's little robotic leg.

We ended up riding it twice in a row.

And then this happened....

IMG_8405%20(Large).jpg

Getting onto the attraction, both my phone and camera were functional immediately before entering the elevator car. Now.. the screen on my camera was fried, and the screen on my phone was as well. The phone was functional as in I could hear notifications coming in, but the screen was TOAST. Same with the camera, would take pics, but the screen was TOAST. NOT GOOD. What would I do? I had Club 33 reservations for later in the day, the Adventureland Suite and SH55 booked for Friday, and now I was down to just my work iPhone and no DSLR camera. I felt faint as if the ground had been ripped out from under me.

Whoever, Did you find out what caused your camera screen and phone screen to get fried ?

WOW. Way to leave us hanging. What would cause them both to go out at the same time? Did anyone else have any issues??

Can't believe how early you arrived! I can't get anyone to get to the park before 8:30. :rotfl:

Hope your phone and camera are OK! My DSLR took a hit at Disney World when we got caught in a down pour and I didn't get it put away fast enough. It flaked out most of the night until it dried out and was OK the next day. Still had me nervous thinking I ruined it!

Neat trip overview! I'm going to need to go back and read everything. Is that a Haunted Mansion Dooney that she has? I have the same one! I didn't know that there was a restaurant like that inside the Grand Californian! Looks a little "fancy shmancy" for me though haha

Every part of the meal was superb and while I'm not normally a dessert guy, I LOVE pistachio so this was an awesome pairing and dessert.

I'll expound upon it in my next installment. I feel like it was something on the attraction. Disney took a report and did nothing however.

Amy's phone was acting up after but a reboot solved her issues. I have my suspicions but nothing I can definitively prove.

Oh yeah if we are paying to stay at a DLR hotel, we are doing EMH. It's amazing to get to do attractions with minimal crowds.

Both were replaced after I got back to Phoenix (I lease my phone vs. having to re-buy hardware all the time, so it was covered under the insurance program, and my camera was still under warranty so it was shipped back to Nikon and the screen repaired/replaced). I rock pro-gear, and the D750 and all my glass is weather resistant. I shoot in the rain in fact with no issues.

Love everything so far.
Thanks!! We are just getting started and the best is yet to come.

Please do! I comment and go into backstory/detail on a great many things in nearly all of my trip reports. Yes, Amy has 4 or 5 of the HM Dooney print. She has two letter carriers (yes, two of the same purse), the original red-interior Smith (used as a diaper bag for a long time), the purse pictured, the wallet, and the clutch I think. Woman has Disney Dooneys coming out of her ears including a bunch of C33 ones.

After I recovered from my shock, I realized there was NOTHING I could do. We still had the opportunity to ride Guardians a few more times... which we did...

I must admit, while I put on a good face for the camera, I was in VERY deep thought. HOW would I rectify this situation? I started looking at Amazon. How much was another camera body and could I get it same-day primed or even sooner at extra cost? Yeah.. .that was going to be over $1800 and wouldn't arrive until TOMORROW, which meant I'd miss Club 33 without a DSLR. While Amy, Katherine, and I had been many times, it was Lindsey's first trip, and as she is defacto family now, I wasn't going to let that happen. A quick text to Joe, and he was ready to offer up his old Canon body and his lenses. He could deliver it in the afternoon. I filed that away after extending extreme gratitude. I was reeling... thinking... a call to the closest Best Buy.. nope, we don't have that. Every googled retail store, intent upon buying a new body.. finally, I found Fullerton Camera.. they rent bodies and lens, and had one.. only problem.. they didn't open for another hour plus. Resigned to making a decision later in the day, I started to accept my fate and just start living Disneyland without photo-documenting it. I must say, I'm sure it was fun, but without the pics, I might have forgotten those parts even happened. That's part of why I photo-document. It makes the memories POP and it takes me RIGHT BACK to that place in time. I can hear the kid's voices in my ear. The wind rushing by.. The smells. That's my biggest motivation for trip-reporting. I can relive it the same way, with precision, year, after year, after year. It doesn’t ever fade.

After a LOT of up, down, up, down, up, down, up, down, it was time for breakfast. The family headed for Flo’s but I was headed up to the Chamber of Commerce to see what they could do. I filled out a report, showed them the devices, was handed a piece of paper and basically told "Call us later". I stopped at the camera shop across the street on the way back and inquired about renting or flat-out buying a body... NOPE. Defeated, I made my way back and caught up with the family on the Pier.

Anybody who's close enough to me to be FB friends knows that Victoria is basically Ron Swanson. She'll KILL and entire pound of bacon saving one, maybe two pieces for me. We are truly kindred in this regard. I just hope she has the same mistrust for government and realization that Taxation IS THEFT that I do. Her appetite would NOT be stymied this trip, and she basically just wanted to shovel bacon into her face. I commend her.

After sufficient cured and smoked pork refueling, it was time for some RACERS!! I'm not sure if we won or not, but gosh, darn it. WE WON!!!! The car full of this much ambition, grit, and raw RESOLVE HAS TO WIN!!!

DCA_RACERA_20180321_410262665742%20(Large).jpg

We normally make our way down to Paradise Pier... only most everything was DOWN. Screamin' DOWN, Toy Story, DOWN, Mickey's Fun Wheel of DEATH, DOWN... the Swings were going, but for whatever reason, we ended up at the Zeppelin.

Vic was loving the wind!!

IMG_8433%20(Large).jpg

But finally, we hit Goofy's... It was a grand time!!

IMG_8438%20(Large).jpg

After which, it was time for me to leave... I high-tailed it to the exit of DCA, marched my way against the flow of people intent upon pushing me back, closer to where I was coming from... Along the way, I had hit an Uber requests for the drop off lot. I made it to the lot and had but a 4-5 minute wait before my ride showed up. We headed north on Harbor and towards Fullerton... my equipment rental store first and foremost on my mind. Five point Two miles, a hair over Sixteen minutes, and $8.36 later, I was at Fullerton Camera. I must say, they opened the store early just for me after I explained my need on the phone. I brought my bag in, explained what I was after, showed them my gear and the issue, gave the rental body a once-over, re-adjusted all the settings to how I shoot, gave it a few shutters through my lens, and was satisfied. A quick credit card swipe and contract sign, and I was back on the street waiting for an Uber to take me back.

This time, it would be a hair over six miles and almost Twenty-one minutes, but I was dropped at the Disneyland Hotel Lobby. I rushed up to the room, swapped camera straps between the bodies, clicked on my favorite lens, and was headed back to the park at a fast pace.

IMG_8441%20(Large).jpg

I gotta say, anybody who needs a camera or lens rental or even used purchase, PLEASE go check them out. They literally saved my trip experience I was spending five-figures on. So grateful!!!

That is so strange about the screens. You think it was an magnetic field, though? I wonder if it was also the force of the ride and how fast it goes... It kind of worries me about taking my camera/phone on any of the fast rides now. I would be so sad if that happened, especially to my phone! I need it for a distraction on the flight home! lol

That's awesome they have a camera rental place so close by, though. The pictures are just beautiful! It really makes me want to slow down on our next trip and take all the little details in. We're going with a first timer next month, so we'll probably have the opportunity to slow it down instead of running around the park like usual!

So here's the thing, I carry 2 phones every day. I have an iPhone for work my Moto Droid for personal. They've taken EXTREME hits, drops, etc. They were both in my left short pocket. The Iphone was fine, the Droid was fuxxored. The Camera was in my backpack. I have 5 ponchos for cushion on the bottom of the interior compartment. It wasn't a acceleration/deceleration issue as far as I could determine. Amy's phone was in her purse, and was largely non-responsive until it was rebooted. The only non-effected device was my iphone (arguably, its in a charging case, so it's got a lot of protection), but I'm at a loss for ANY other explanation.

I love my solo trips for exactly that reason. No rush, just roll with it and LOOK AROUND YOU. I love every bit of the parks.

That's really strange then. I wonder if it happened with anyone else during the same time? I think Disney should have given some kind of compensation or reimbursement for the rental or something. A fast past at least!

I never got the chance to check back while we were at the resort. I recently inquired, will chime in on whether they offer anything. It honestly was SOMETHING to do with that attraction that time. 3 devices impacted 2, rendered returned to manufacturer isn't coincidence.

I checked in with the family and we decided it was time to grab some lunch. We agreed to meet at Smokejumpers. I headed out from the hotel and made my way over. Ended up grabbing some Onion Rings, Chili-Cheese Fries for Amy and I to split, a burger for Katherine, and some Chicken and Waffle fries for the younger girls. We LOVE Smokejumpers. I feel it’s a vast improvement over Taste Pilots. Overall, Grizzly Peak Airfield is vastly superior to Condor Flats in its theming to this Disney fan. LOVE IT.

This is kind of a family tradition. Back in 2016, I happened to snap a pic of Amy right as she was about to eat an Onion Ring. Katherine still just google searches for that today to get to either my MiceChat or Disboards Trip Reports. To this day, every trip, we stop by Smoke Jumpers, get an order of Onion Rings and I grab a candid pic. It's a really weird tradition, but we think it’s hilarious.

Here is this Trip's Onion Ring Montage..

Lunch completed, it was time to meet up with Lindsey and Reese for some Guardians MaxPass action. They ended up having a pretty big queue even for the Fastpass, so we got to see the West outdoor queue.

I loved this plant. Didn't pay attention to what kind it was though.

Once in the former boiler room, this is where Overlays like the Guardians falls a little flat. That's clearly a vintage chain hoist... of Terran origin with some hideous paint slapped on it to make it "futuristic and alien". Disney, I expected much more (or you could have left it the superiorly themed attraction, the Hollywood Tower Hotel... just sayin').

A look down into the food prep area for some of the specimens in the collection. I don't often get to the second level oddly. This was a treat.

Another hoist.. I LOVE the patina on this one.

Harold of course.

And a really good shot of Country Bear Vacation Hoedown's Delores. Even more importantly, the paintings from the lobby of the Hollywood Tower Hotel hidden under a sheet behind her.

I can't quite make out her tag. Anybody have a better pic?

And another angle as we made our way to our transport..
