Is this a normal price drop?

We booked a place holder (first time doing so) on our last cruise to get the discount and perks and are using it for the 7 night cruise out of New York for November 3rd for a GTY - 11c. Was just checking Disney’s site for our cruise and the price for our category room is going for cheaper then we paid. I wouldn’t have thought that be the case since we booked on board and should have gotten the discount for booking onboard. The same GTY room we booked is currently going for $83 cheaper that’s with all taxes and fees included. Shouldn’t that discount kept us at a better price for our category over those booking not on the ship? Do you believe the ship is so empty they dropped the prices this much they are offering prices better then having prebooked on our last cruise? I need some education on this. :goodvibes

Are you sure it isn't a GT rate, instead? That's a last-minute discounted rate with restrictions, different from GTY, and it is often cheaper than booking on opening day, even with discounts.

I just checked and it isn't a *GT.

OP, did you book a placeholder onboard, that you move to a sail date later, or did you book that specific cruise onboard? If you are able to cancel without penalty still, you can, and then rebook at the cheaper price. However, don't forget to factor in the OBB credits you will lose.

ETA: I am thinking you are already inside the cancellation penalty deadline. :(

I am on the Nov 10th out of NYC. The cost of our cruise dropped a few weeks ago, after we paid in full. It was a drop in the port fees. I believe the port fees are a fixed amount. So if they drop, the overall cost of the cruise drops.

It might be worth a phone call to see if you can get a rebate for the price difference. The worst they can say is no. But DON'T USE THE WORD "CANCEL". Just say price adjustment.

Update: Talked to DH this morning and I found where the difference in the numbers are. I silly forgot to add in the prepaid gratuities and the vacation insurance we had added to our trip. Those add ons really do add up don't they? This must be the pretrip anxieties in effect. The nightmares about things going wrong on the trip are next huh? :goodvibes

We booked a placeholder and when we got home had our travel agent we listed book the cruise for us.

In the future, if you know the cruise you want to book (which it sounds like from the way you worded TA booking the cruise when you got home), you can do that and your TA should be assigned to it since s/he is on file as your TA. Saves the whole placeholder step which is IMHO really only good for a cruise you want to take that is not available for sale yet - if you know what cruise you want, that just adds a layer of silliness to do a placeholder and convert it as soon as you're home.

And also, you would avoid the possibility that the fare has increased between the time you booked the placeholder and the time the TA actually booked the cruise. If you know what cruise you want while onboard, book it to get best pricing and stateroom selection and have it assigned to your TA.

Good point! Even if it's not a "popular" cruise, if the room category is right on the bubble of an increase, even one cabin being booked could bump you up in price to the next level.
