50th in 2021

What's been eerily quiet is if there will, in fact, be new monorails in time for the 50th. I haven't seen any updates across the media platforms and I would think there needs to be a good amount of in-situ testing before certifying for safe transport. 2021 is not far even with the current baseline.
There won't be new monorail vehicles by 2021. As soon as I heard that Bombardier was given the contract, I knew wdw would be looking at a decade before delivery. Do a google search of Bombardier and you'll quickly see the legal trouble they are in for not delivering on their contracts all over the world in the past decade (London, Toronto, Waterloo, Switzerland). And it's not just being months late on delivery, but years late. They are so far behind on their contracts in these cities that it will be years before they can even start on wdw. :( I'm surprised that anyone is still hiring them, but I guess when only a few companies in the world can make these vehicles, there is basically no competition.

And Bombardier did the last round of monorails for Disney.

I'm guessing at some point there will be a dedicated 50th anniversary thread (if there isn't one already). I cannot wait to head down for that - I know it'll be crowded, chaotic, and possibly a little frustrating, but I wouldn't think of missing it!!

I am not sure that Bombardier actually has a confirmed contract in-hand. The last I heard was that Gurr made a comment, but not sure it was 100% solidified.

If they are delinquent on delivery of their products, I presume there are severe financial penalties. That, to me, is a major red flag for WDW to place a purchase order with them (and really wonder if that is a precursor to bankruptcy). But, your point of a niche market for their product might make them the only possible sourcing. I would hope WDW would have an alternate supplier, fully vetted, ready to go in the event the primary supplier can't execute the contract.

There is an extra challenge with Disney in that their monorail beams are a different dimention than standard monorail so they need custom trains, further limiting their suppliers

Yep, they pigeon-holed themselves with this design. I feel confident that they are weighing the costs of a standardized design vs. custom/unique. This scenario points to me that it's not always the out-of-the-box costs, but the service costs over the life of the transport system (Gondola anyone?).

Hope what I am about to ask does not sound “stupid”....:cutie:

How crazy will the park be in late July/first week of August in 2021 comparing to the opening of Star Wars GE in 2020?? My family usually go to WDW during those time frame because we like the low crowd and the heat (yes we love the summer heat in FL!) We went last summer 2018 and are planning to return in 2021 for Tron. We are avoiding WDW this summer and 2020 because of the opening of Star Wars GE.

Galaxy's Edge opens this August 29th so by next July it will have been open almost a year. There may be other new things open (Mickey and Minnie Runaway Railroad and Rat for example)

My suspicion is the 50th celebration will have started by July 2021 so I would think next year will be a bit less crowded but I think the parks are just going to be rather crowded going forward for many years

We we're we're for the Year of a Million Dreams and I remember we were set to ride Star Tours and the doors open and CMs came in and gave everyone in the vehicle a set of the special Million Dreams Mickey Ears - so I did get those

Wish they did more things like that - really can't cost them *that* much and obviously made a big impact

We got the magic fast passes at ToT and something else I can't remember at HBD, maybe DHS was a lucky park lol

We're planning on going late Sept/Oct 2021 so we're there on the exact day so we'll be interested in any news.

Our plan it to do at least to trips during the celebration - with one being on the actual date (that might be parents only and shorter in timeframe - really just to be there on the day) and then a longer family trip ... But we shall see once more details come out

Our school district just added a random week off in October starting next year, so we're thinking of a WDW trip in October of 2021. Trying to decide between doing a summer trip and dealing with the heat or the October trip and dealing with F&W crowds!

Uh-oh, our grandkids’ district in Texas added an October break too! I wonder whether Fall Break will become common like Spring Break. At least it’s not overlapping Jersey Week.

They also added a week off in February, and my fingers are crossed that they keep it for a family trip to WDW in early 2021!

Dare i say there waiting to see how the skyliner goes. If it all goes well (and im sure it will) could be the end for the monorail. The skyliner is a much cheaper option.

I think the weather warrants a need for a constant running transport system at MK. I can definitely see them continue to run them while investigating a more off-the-shelf monorail system with new beams.

By all reports there is no way they would expand skyliner in that manner, I also don't think they can walk away from monorails, in that it is almost synonymous with WDW. I do think the goal IS to get out of bussing as much as possible, what the next version is I am not sure.

So I was thinking that our next trip was goin to be summer of 2022 and that would definitely fall in the celebration window. But now we are probably moving our trip up to summer 2021....so most likely it will fall during the beginning of the celebration but I guess we also could just miss it.

I'm already saving up for the inevitable event. I'm treating it as an early 40th birthday present to myself

Does anyone think that the 50th celebration might start "earlier" than the summer of 2021? Any chance it could run spring to spring or Jan 1st all the way to summer of 2022? As people have already mentioned, Spring and Fall are already starting to surpass summer as high season.
I have a child turning 3 in May of 2021... If the festivities run into 2022 I would make a trip as late as possible as she would be able to do more, If they start prior to her birthday, free admission is obviously a perk. :rolleyes1
