Cases rising or dropping by you?

Forgive me for derailing the thread a bit. I tried to find new info, but I didn’t find it. Has there been a spike from the 2 Covid positive hairstylists?

Nope. The last update from the county where it happened was a week ago and at that time, there were no positives among those with known exposure to the two positive hairstylists. They've been talking it up as an example of the value of masks.

Whether masks helped or not the media would never admit that maybe it just doesn't spread as bad a thought.

Texas has been reporting spikes the last few days. More testing or did they open too soon? Or something else? It's hard to quantify.

Not that I’ve seen

It's encouraging having an identifiable group to "study" and find that maybe transmission through casual contact isn't as easy as it could be.

Some other possible takeaways:
1. No update doesn’t necessarily mean no cases.
2. No info on how thorough the contact tracing was conducted.
3. Wearing masks is absolutely effective.
4. Maybe some new asymptomatic cases as a result.

I think it’s still hard to know- only 45 out of the 140 exposed customers decided to get tested. So 2/3s of those could be positive and exposing others in the community. The total case count for that County was 123 when the exposure started and cases are now at 174- while 51 new cases seems small when compared to big metros, for this county 30% of their total cases have come in the last 3 weeks so they are definitely moving in the wrong direction.

Ah, so people who didn't lose income or health insurance are back to berating those who did and need their businesses opened up so they can earn those things for their families. And trying to claim a moral high ground. Lovely.
I hope you were fighting for all Americans to have insurance, before Covid-19. If not, you definitely shouldn't be talking about people standing on a moral high ground. Many people have started worrying about Americans having insurance in the past 3 months. Unfortunately, they didn't care about the 27+ million who didn't pre-Covid-19. They started caring, when it affected them or the people they care about. I hope all of the people who are now worried about Americans having insurance realize what it's like to not have it & fight for all Americans to have the same privilege. If not, they need to stop the hypocrisy & quit complaining about some people going a few months without insurance, when they support millions going years without it.

A big chunk of it is a lag from private labs reporting results, plus we are testing more and more and our precent positive still is dropping.
That makes sense, but 5311 positive new cases over the last four days seems like a lot to me even with increased testing. It still means cases are rising unlike other places where they are declining with more testing. (CT, MA, RI) for example.

Someone just posted on my Facebook page that Florida cases are spiking. Article in Newsweek I guess. Over the last three days cases rising quickly and Friday saw the largest single day increase. Hate to hear this.
That Newsweek article was written in a very sensational way IMO. They completely skipped the fact that Florida is doing more testing. A better write up can be found in the June 6 Miami Herald:

While the state has seen its biggest daily gain in six weeks the past few days, the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests out of those reported in a single day has declined over the same time period, as the state provides testing to more people.

Having insurance isn't the same as having insurance that works for them. People losing their plans should be eligible for an ACA plan. But it doesn't mean it will actually cover anything for them.

Many people have been out of work for 3 months. People had carefully constructed lives they had worked very hard to put in place. In some cases they chose jobs that had insurance plans that worked for them. They invested their life savings into businesses. Many are on the verge of losing it all. Not everyone just picked up a computer and started working from home.

So how long do we do this? Another 3 months? Until we get a vaccine? We were asked to stay at home until we could flatten the curve and not overwhelm our hospitals. Hospitals have now had to lay off staff because of it.

I'm just saying it's easy to say "let's just keep this going" if your life is mostly unchanged. We know a lot more about this virus now than when this started. Nobody is asking to just throw caution to the wind. They want to find ways to safely get back to their livelihoods.

If you want to keep everything shut down, then for how long?

Raising my hand as someone who lives in a hot spot, it does spread quickly. We had over 17,000 in our county, under 800,000 residents, over 1,600 deaths, and we were one of the first ones shut down with the strictest restrictions.

This is a question no one answers. Not the officials actually making the decisions or those in casual conversations like here on the DIS. Government and health authorities have long since stopped talking about flattening curves and hospitals being overwhelmed. :sad2:

Pointing out that once the bars open and young people are let loose things are going to absolutely explode. There better be a concerted effort to get masks mainstream and "COOL" before Gen Z turns up or the second wave will be here by July & there will be no putting that genie back in the bottle. THIS is what I fear, they hook up and move around without worry. They were born into 9/11, lived through trainings for activeshooters in elementary school, they had phones since kindergarten to call 911, been through all sorts of destabilizing educational initiatives that failed, grew up without housing & financial stability due to the 2008 crisis, then have been forced to worry about medical benefits and student loans - NOW these kids lost time over a health crisis that they were told wasn't a "them" problem it's a "boomer problem" which has made them resentful and now there is another "us v them" (justified) social movement that is encouraging mass groupings. How exactly does anyone think this is going to work out when no-one is on the same page about best practices?

Our bars opened here in Athens, GA on Monday. Of course, there was also a curfew because of the protests but it didn't seem to stop anyone. I stay clear of the downtown area just on principle but have seen pictures. Not a single person had a mask on and they were shoulder to shoulder. I told hubby just this morning they were simply doing a social experiment to see if there was herd immunity (snort sure). It will be interesting to see if there is a bigger rise then we were already having here in town. On another note, what the heck were all those students doing still in town? UGA has been shut down since March and not opening up again until fall. I get that some had leases through the end of term but why didn't they go home then?

Your article also says that there is concern because the test results aren't accurate and the state is making plans on their on re-opening based on inaccurate results.

Health experts have previously told the Miami Herald that they were concerned the number of pending COVID-19 tests listed by the state is an undercount because Florida reports only the number of Floridians waiting to get test results from state labs, not private ones — and private labs are completing more than 90% of state tests.

Previously, it has taken as long as two weeks for the results of pending tests from private labs to be added into the state’s official count, making it difficult for officials to project the size and scale of the pandemic in the state. It’s unclear how quickly results are currently being sent to the state from private labs.

Rentals at my kids’ universities generally start June 1st. Ds22 just moved into his new apartment on Thursday, dd19‘s roommates are moving in next week. She is planning on waiting until August.

What?

The gen z in my life are very different than this description.

Yep, but these kids never left. I worked in property management here for years and our leases actually ran with the school calendar for certain places but not all. UGA is on a quarter system, sorta. There is a short summer term that is not happening this year, they plan on opening in the fall so leases for then don't start until mid-August.

What is your description because I remember 9/11 on week 1 of preschool & I also remember that in March their semesters and spring break ended and it was all over the news that Covid wasn't a threat to them and they needed to stay home to protect their grandparents generation.

What the heck are you talking about? The kids you described are not the ones I know. Are you just looking for a way to pin any kind of surge on young people?
