Just discovered a quirky state rule, tell me about yours (region or country)

Interesting. I saw that it's illegal to bring a French poodle to the opera in Chicago. No culture for animals, I guess.

Don't you feel iffy when people put letters after their name?

I work with physicians, so any degree helps. I use my MA, CAE (certified association executive) somewhat to help level it out. I'm working on my PhD now. When I finish it (gah--2027 I think), I will absolutely use the PhD, but not the MA.

Just discovered a quirky state rule, tell me about yours (region or country)

Apparently, according to Illinois state law, it is illegal to speak English. The officially recognized language is"American". Also, it is illegal for anyone to give lighted cigars to dogs, cats, and other domesticated animals kept as pets. There’s an Illinois law that reportedly mandates all...

Giving a birthday gift of $80 in singles

I've done origami for money gifts. Google Dollar Bill Origami. I did a poem for DMIL giving money for a trip, and each page of the poem had a different origami piece, like a shirt/pants/suitcase, etc. I also did a bouquet for her for Mother's Day one year:

    slo’s WEDNESDAY 3/27 poll - Weighted Blanket

My daughter uses one -- says it helps with anxiety. I chose Other as well. I tried one. Maybe I got one too heavy (I chose based on my weight), but I wasn't able to roll over in bed (I'm a restless sleeper) and it gave me a bit of claustrophobia (even though I LOVE lots of quilts on me -- go...

slo’s TUESDAY 3/26 poll - Sour Patch Kids

Needed multiple options today! I don't like ANY sour candies. I've never tried sour patch kids, though. Because, sour.

Do you agree with Occam's razor?

Yes. One of my favorite books is Obvious Adams by Robert Updegraff -- it was written in 1914, but still resonates in that the best answers are usually the most obvious ones.

    Easter Dinner

It's just DH and me this year -- he's a trumpet player and has a number of church jobs -- he won't be home until about 1:00 p.m. Sometimes, our son and his family come over -- not sure of their plans this year. Normally, we have ham and trimmings, but I'm actually thinking (since we only have...

    Zeno's Paradox

Nope. I learned about this years ago from Firesign Theater's Everything You Know is Wrong (1974).

    slo’s FRIDAY 3/22 poll - Seafood Tacos 🌮

Where's the I LOVE seafood tacos choice? I do make shrimp tacos at home. I recently bought some crunchy codfish bites, and they're really good in tacos. I like controlling the toppings and tortilla options. I like them in restaurants as well -- a lot of time whether I order them is the...

    Internet Browser

I use Chrome for everything except my college library -- something with my work firewall doesn't let me do EBSCO and other searches for some odd reason on Chrome. So for the college literature searches I use Edge.

How many times during your working career did you think about slapping a co-worker across the face?

A previous boss of mine had a "no slapping" rule in the office. Whenever someone irked us, we often said it was a good thing we had that rule. I now keep a Slinky on my desk to remind me that some people serve no useful purpose, but they sure are fun to push down the stairs. Given to me by...

Name of door to door sales?

My husband's used his Fuller brush for the past 60 years (even though he doesn't really need a brush any more!). DD's hair is super curly and super think -- he bought one for her while she was in high school (they still have a website). She found something she liked better, so I've been using...

    slo’s MONDAY 3/18 poll - Eye Color 👀

Welcome back! I'm the lone "amber" response. I've got brown and green (looks light brown unless I'm wearing certain colors), so hazel without blue. My son has blue-grey and my daughter true hazel. DH has blue. My grandmother's eyes were really cool. They were dark brown, but the circle...

Who is your favorite James Bond Actor?

I love Sean Connery, but my first "bonding" experience was with Roger Moore -- he'll always be #1 with me. David Niven played in a bit of a parody of Bond in Casino Royale in 1967. I don't believe it's actually recognized as a Bond film, though, even though it's somewhat based on a Fleming novel.

    King's Quest PC Game series

I only played one -- Perils of Rosella, so IV? -- a bit of a play on fairy tales. I bought that together with Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards. I'm so old.

Mom lives alone and doesn't answer her phone. Ideas?

I set up some Echo devices in Mom's house and set them up to make and answer phone calls by voice. Would something like that help? When Dad was sick, I set up a camera so that Mom would be able to log in and see him from another room so that she'd know if he were in distress.

    Have you got a degree?

Masters in organizational leadership (done while DH was deployed and kids were little, so pretty challenging). Currently (at 56) in my second quarter of classes toward a PhD in business management. Currently wondering WHY I would do that to myself, because it's been a while, and it's been hard.
