50 Hours in Orlando; a 2020 Marathon Weekend trip report- COMPLETE

When it's below zero at home, who doesn't want to take a whirlwind trip to the Magic Kingdom? When my sister suggested joining her at the last minute as her cheering section for a few days of her Dopey Challenge, I couldn't resist. Come along for a report that might take longer to write than the trip took to experience, as I chronicle 50 or so hours in Orlando.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

It's been a while since I did a report, so here's a little about me:

Favorite Disney Movie: Mary Poppins
Favorite WDW ride: Mad Tea Party (although that's changed after this trip)
Favorite WDW show: Tie between Muppetvision 3D and the Enchanted Tiki Room
Favorite WDW snack: Dole Whip!

I'm not a runner. I've done 3 half-marathons, and that's probably all I'll ever do. This photo that's been making the rounds of social media sums up my approach to running:

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

But I am apparently masochistic enough to not mind the ridiculously early wake-up calls to be "cheer squad". The 4 am Friday wake-up call for the 7:30 am flight was the latest I slept over those 3 days.

Because things were so last minute, I booked a flight where I would have to pay for a carry-on bag or a piece of checked luggage. Although it is NOT my style, I swore to myself that for 3 days, I could make due with a backpack stuffed with packing cubes:

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

No souvenirs for me! :(

Leaving my winter coat locked in the car, I sprinted to the terminal for an on-time departure. Which turned into a 30 minute delay upon arrival. I don't know how we ended up that late- the mysteries of air currents or something. But my excitement was building as I came to the monorail to spy this:

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

I know all the arguments about why staying onsite is more expensive for less space, but after standing in line behind about 40 people for my rental car, and then having to trudge back to the other side of the airport to pick up the car I requested, I was really missing the Magical Express! But hey, free (to me) hotel room, so I couldn't complain too much. ;)

Much texting with my sister M while I waited in line for the car- she hadn't eaten lunch yet and neither had I. She was at Magic Kingdom, so we agreed to meet at Captain Cook's at the Poly for a late lunch.

I was a tiny bit worried when I pulled up at the Poly, with signs stating that parking was only available for guests with reservations or ADRs, but I just cheerfully advised the guard I was there to meet my sister for lunch and she let me through to park, no problem. It probably helped that it was 2:30 pm already. I managed to beat M there, which meant I had a detour to have dessert first. Hello Pineapple Lanai and my beautiful, beautiful Dole Whip!

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

After not having one for 2 years(!!), I savored every bite.

We then headed to Captain Cooks and decided to split:

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

Pulled Pork Nachos and wings with Tamarind sauce (Hawaiian style)

These were both amazing! I can see why the nachos have such a cult following, and the wings were spicy (but not too spicy) and sweet. Every bite seemed more delicious than the last and I was thrilled to be back in DisneyWorld after a 2 year absence.

Oooh those are some early days! Can't wait to read more!

Dawn

Yes, being part of the cheer squad or one of the runners means you sleep when others are awake, and are awake when others are asleep. :) Alternate trip report title: We'll sleep when we're dead.

Welcome!

Following along. Looking forward to reading more

Welcome, and thank you!

Friday, part 2

Sister M had managed to grab a back-up boarding pass for ROTR after the 10K that morning (not nearly as cool as the guys that took a detour during the race to get one) so after picking up my park ticket, and some messing around with rental cars so we only needed to pay for parking once, we headed over to Hollywood Studios to hang out, in case her number came up.

We were both taking the weekend at a whim- no ADRs booked 6 months out, no FP+ reserved before the day of- very different than our normal touring style. (Alternate trip report title: Plan, who needs a plan?) As we entered the park, I was able to grab a T1 FP+ for Alien Swirling Saucers for an hour from then, and then we looked for something else to do.

Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular was just about to start, so we grabbed some seats. While we were waiting for the show to start, I booked us an ADR for Oga's Cantina at 7:20 pm. The show was still pretty fun, but not as stunt-filled in past years. Like Indy didn't come dropping out of the ceiling- he just kinda rolled over the track where the big rock ends up rolling. And Marion didn't get put into the back of the truck in the Cairo street scene. Still plenty of explosions at the end, though.

Her boarding group got called just at the end of the show, so we walked down to Galaxy's Edge together, and promised to meet up at Oga's if not before.

I headed through GE to Toy Story Land for my Swirling Saucers FP.

To Infinity & Beyond!

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

It was fun, but it was no Mad Tea Party. Needed more spinning. :)

I thought about waiting for TSM, but then decided if I was going to wait for a ride, I'd rather wait for a ride I hadn't been on: Smugglers Run.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

I agreed to the single rider line with the understanding that I couldn't request a role- fine with me. As expected, I ended up as an engineer.
Waited my turn for this beauty:
Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

And then had to go hunt down the girl who was one of our pilots who'd decided she didn't need to stay with the group, because she'd ridden it so many times before. 🙄

I don't know how to feel about this ride- I feel like I missed a bunch of what was happening while doing my "engineer duty". I like the idea of it, but not so much the execution, although I can't really tell you how I think I could make it better. More rides will be needed...

I backtracked out of Galaxy's Edge and went to ride StarTours with the FP I had picked up while in line at Swirling Saucers. I needn't have bothered- the standby line was a walk-on also. I enjoyed the Rise of Skywalker scenes, but was glad I had already seen the movie!

I dropped by MuppetVision3D but had just missed the start of a show and didn't want to wait for the entire pre-show, so headed back to Galaxy's Edge to find some dinner before we got our drink on. I was sad to miss "a salute to all nations, but mostly America", but with only about 4 hours of park time on this day, it just didn't happen.

While I was waiting for my sister to finish ROTR, I thought I should get some actual food before we went to Oga's for drinks. So I stopped by Docking Bay 7 and tried the Smoked Kaadu pork ribs, because I was on a smoked pork food kick (alternate trip report title: How much pork can one person eat in a weekend?)

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

These were very good. The slaw that comes with them had a strong vinegar taste which cut through the spices of the sauce. The blueberry muffin was a blueberry muffin? I always enjoy when Disney tries something beyond burgers/chicken nuggets/pizza and this was very satisfying.

I also ordered the Oi-Oi puff (raspberry cream puff with passion fruit mousse).

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

The green stuff that was on the top, and also on the side, was some type of spongy cake, that had no flavor. I guess it provided character?? The actual cream puff and passion fruit topping were pretty delicious. But Disney, it's not great to give your guests food that make you think that they're covered in mold.

By then, M had found me and had some dinner, so we were off to Oga's. There was a decent line of probably 20 or so people waiting to get inside when we checked in. We waited maybe 10 minutes, so we had time to listen to the rules:
45 minute time limit
Do not go wandering around taking pictures until the end, because they might think you've left your spot and they'll bring someone else in.
DJ Droid doesn't take requests

I think that was about it.

We were escorted to a standing-table near the DJ Droid
Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

and perused the menu:

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

After much discussion with our tablemates about what they had tried and liked, we ordered:

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

On the left, the Bespin Fizz (Bacardi superior rum, yuzu purée, pomegranate juice, white cranberry juice, and cloud swirl)

On the right, the Fuzzy Tauntaun (peach vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice with tangerine, pure cane sugar, and “buzz button tingling” foam )

The tingling foam on the Fuzzy Tauntaun was like nothing I've ever had before- I was glad that was M's drink, because 1 sip was enough. It took a while before the tingling went away. I really liked the Bespin Fizz- just a hint of sweet, and a little sour, and the cloud swirl was delightful.

Since M was running a half-marathon in the morning, she decided to stop at 1 drink, but I had to try another one:

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

The Yub Nub (Malibu pineapple rum, Sailor Jerry spiced rum, citrus juices, and passion fruit, served in a souvenir Endor mug)

This was sweeter, and very delicious! I had asked our server if I could order it without the mug, and she said that she wouldn't charge for the mug, just the drink. But when the mug came, I wanted it! It was so beautifully crafted, and quite heavy. Still, no room in the backpack for it, so I left Oga's behind without it.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

Bye Oga's! I'll be back.

We headed out around 8:20 and went back to the hotel to crash, since we had a 3 am wake-up call!

Those ribs look delicious! And yeah.. if you hadn't specifically said the green on top was sponge cake, I would have never known. Actually at first glance I thought, wasabi foam? LOL!
3 am huh? Ugh, I would be a zombie!

They were delicious!

I honestly thought they had given me the wrong dessert. There was quite a bit of trepidation trying the green stuff- so glad it wasn't wasabi foam!

At least I didn't have to run- I got in a quick cat-nap on the monorail up to the TTC.

Thanks for cheering your sister on! I did Dopey, as well, and kept saying how much I would have loved a cheerleader.

Can't wait to read the rest!

Saturday January 11th

3am wake-up, 3:40 hotel departure. Arrival at EPCOT parking lot @ 4:25 am. According to Google maps, it is 4.2 miles from the hotel to EPCOT. Thank goodness we had found an 80s station on the radio to rock out to.

M heads to the starting corrals, while I head the opposite way to the monorail. The early wake-up is no fun, but I do love seeing the place all lit up with almost no one around.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

On the Half-Marathon day, there are 2 places I go to cheer for M- the TTC (mile 4) and the road between the Poly and Shades of green (mile 7). I've got my light-up ears to make it easy for M to find me in the crowd

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

And then I find my spot, and wait. I've got this fabulous view for an hour or so before the wheelers and the first runners come through:

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

Clearly Disney doesn't trust the runners to be awake this early either. LOL

Disney offers runner-tracking, so you can keep up with your runner and figure out where they are, but it's not perfect, and M's running slower than her normal pace. I finally see her, and figure that based on her pace I might have time to catch a quick breakfast at Captain Cook's.

I look for the most portable breakfast offering- aha! a croissant breakfast sandwich- and ask for it to go. (spoiler- mistake!). To my surprise, I get handed a giant bag, but I take it and head out towards Shades of Green.

On my way, I see a trash can, and decide I better eat this giant container of food Food-and-Wine style, so open it up:

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020[/url, on Flickr

What a mess! This is impossible to eat as a sandwich, I've got scrambled eggs falling out and going everywhere... the only thing I did right was grab a huge handful of napkins.

Belly full, I head out for more cheering. My sister is in there somewhere:

She's got 6 miles or so to go, and I've got to get to Hollywood Studios to try for a ROTR boarding group and back to the car parked in front of EPCOT before she gets there.

Do I make it? No.

I did get a back-up ROTR boarding group (117) at about 8:10 am. Made it over to EPCOT IG where they started letting people into the park around 8:30, and it still took me til 9 am to make it back to the car, where she was waiting. We take our tired selves back to the hotel for some pool/hot tub/nap by the pool time.

Congratulations on your Dopey! I've done 3 half-marathons and they almost killed me, so I can't even imagine doing Goofy or Dopey.

Thanks for joining!

Saturday continued...

Since we usually stay on property and depend on Disney Transportation, when it was time for lunch, we thought we'd head to a resort that normally would be challenging to get to on Disney Transport...

Wilderness Lodge

I had never been here before, and WOW! It was stunning. I absolutely love the Log Cabin-esque vibe. While we waited for the restaurant to transition from breakfast to lunch, I wandered around to get some photos.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

I was surprised to see people hanging out in front of the roaring fire when it was 85 degrees outside, but I guess it takes all kinds. :)

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

I just loved this water feature! So calming and relaxing.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

After a 10-15 minute wait, we were buzzed in for lunch at Whispering Canyon Cafe.

This was my first time here, although I've read about it on the boards many times, and my sister's second time. I had read at one point they had cards for the table to say how much you wanted to participate in the "antics" but those were not visible on our trip- not sure if they're gone permanently??

I'm apparently a sucker for this (I also love 50s Prime Time for the same reason) and I would have loved even more antics, but we did have the pleasure of watching several times when someone asked for ketchup.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020], on Flickr

We ordered the skillet, and started with some delicious cornbread! (I may have wrapped a couple of pieces in a napkin to eat while waiting for the marathoners to come through the next morning.)

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

Then came the skillet, which arrived while M was in the ladies room, so I was encouraged to eat the whole thing before she got back, so we could pretend our food hadn't arrived yet. :)

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

Yes, once again I had ended up with roasted pork in my meal! (Alternate trip report title: Pork with every meal) The ribs were good, and the pulled pork had really great flavor but was a bit dry. The roasted chicken was quite good, and the mashed potatoes were amazing. The rest of the veggies were just OK. The CM told us that the corn would be really good cause it's drenched in butter (which it was), but there is no corn like fresh-picked Midwestern sweet corn, straight out of the field. Nothing else compares.

We cleaned our plates, but had no hope for having room for dessert, so we paid and tried to figure out where to go next.

After looking at what had FP+ availability and debating the amount of walking vs. sitting to go to Animal Kingdom for FOTLK and the Nemo Show, we settled on the place with the smallest footprint and the most FP+ options:

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

Yes, sitting outside on the boat from Wilderness Lodge did nothing for my hair. LOL.

We were able to grab FP+ for Space Mountain, so after catching the Dapper Dan set that was starting just as we were starting down Main Street, we headed into Tomorrowland.

M loves Space Mountain, and roller coasters in any form. I hate this version and much prefer Disneyland's version, but we rode it. Because I don't ride it very often, I had forgotten just how much walking there is, both to get to the part where you board the car, and after you get out. So much walking!

I was already feeling hot and crabby at the weather, so I insisted we stop for frozen beverages at the Lunching Pad. This was my first time trying out mobile ordering since they started it, and it worked great! It was also nice that the CM hadn't made our drinks yet because I was able to customize mine in person, when that hadn't been an option on the app. What did we get?

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

The Space Ranger Slush- a mix of green apple and grape flavored icee served with a candy straw.

I got mine with all green apple because something tart and cold on a hot day is so refreshing. M got hers with no modifications.

These really hit the spot. the candy straw was super annoying, but otherwise, they were a hit.

We then decided to hit up a classic while waiting for our Buzz Lightyear FP+ that we had gotten- The Carousel of Progress.

Both M & I are HUGE fans of the Sherman Brothers and always sing-along to the song, which was really bugging the person next to us. Get into the Disney Spirit, guy next to us. What made it even worse was that we got stuck in the 3rd scene. The seats just didn't rotate, so we had to sit through it a second time. (Alternate trip report title: Trapped in a Beautiful Tomorrow). Boy was the guy next to us mad, which just gave us the giggles.

I had been obsessively checking MDE to see if I had a chance at my back-up boarding group being called for ROTR and when we realized they were like 5 or 6 groups away from mine, I made the decision to start heading over to HS, since you only have 2 hours once your group is called to check-into the line. Which was a good decision, because while I was waiting for the boat back to Wilderness Lodge to pick up the car, my group got called.

I also started texting my friend A, who works for Disney, and who was getting a group of friends together to meet up at MK at 6, telling her I didn't know what time I would be able to join them, because of the ROTR situation.

Between retrieving the car, driving to HS, parking at the farthest end of the parking lot, and walking to the queue, it took over an hour. I ended up in line with people 10+ boarding groups behind mine, just cause it took so long to get there.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

No spoilers for ROTR- I promise! The ride went down twice while we were waiting in line- I got in the line around 4 pm and made it to the pre-show about 5:20 pm. I messaged A that the ride was done and I was heading back to MK at 5:56 pm, and met up with the girls around 7pm.

ROTR was amazing- as a pooh-sized fan who can't fit on FOP and so has no comparison, for me it's easily the best ride Disney's ever done. However, I estimated it took about 6 hours of time total to be able to ride it that could have been spent doing other things, between needing to grab a boarding group and needing to get back to the park to ride later in the day. When you only have 50 hours in Disney, that's a LOT of time. So I ultimately have mixed feelings about it.

Anyway, back to MK! Sister M had headed out for dinner and an early night before the marathon (thanks Uber!) so she didn't get to meet up with A and the gang. By the time I got to MK, the nightly fireworks show was happening (I know it's not Wishes anymore, but I don't know the name). Main Street was packed with people, so we ended up doing some shopping and just chatting. Then we ended up back in Tomorrowland for Monster's Inc Laugh Floor. I got picked as one of the people to talk about where they were from, so that was fun. Minneapolis's state bird is Mary Tyler Moore and it's famous for the Eiffel Tower. LOL

We went on Buzz, and I did horribly as expected- the other girls trounced me. And then we enjoyed a leisurely ride on the People Mover to close out the night, followed by some photos in the hub and on Main Street as the park was closing.

There were still thousands of people leaving, so we waited a bit to try to let the lines die down and chatted some more, until we couldn't put off saying goodbye any longer. By the time I made it back to the TTC and then to the car, and then to the hotel, it was 11:30 pm. And guess who had a 2:45 am wake up call?

I agree- there is something about Disney at Christmas that is just extra magical.

No caffeine for me- I gave it up 11 years ago. But days like Sunday are the ones where I wish I hadn't. :) After the marathon was over, I settled in for a nap while M went to the pool for her usual hot tub/pool post-race session, and I couldn't fall asleep!

Sunday January 12

I wondered for a moment if I would have been better off just staying up all night, but with 3 hours of sleep, we got in the car at 3:15 am to head to EPCOT for a 5 am race. And almost didn't make it.

Because the marathon course was changed this year, part of the course had people running through the EPCOT parking area. Which meant they couldn't get as many people in to park as the morning before, even though there were fewer runners. People got so nervous they were going to miss the race that they started leaving their cars and running alongside the road, where there were no shoulders, which made me as a very sleepy driver very nervous! It was with a huge amount of relief that we pulled into a parking spot at 4:35 am. (1 hr 20 minutes to go less than 5 miles)

I wished M luck and shoo-ed her off towards the start, while I headed to the monorail for a repeat of the previous day- we had decided on TTC (mile 9), Poly/Shades of Green (mile 12 1/2ish), and outside Hollywood Studios (approx mile 22) as my cheer spots.

The race was yellow-flagged due to weather conditions, and as I was waiting with others at the TTC, we learned that the start was delayed around 15-20 minutes. M had messaged that she had made it to corral C at 4:58- 2 minutes before the scheduled race start- so I let her know that she had some time to refocus and concentrate on her race plan. She knew she was going to take it slow and walk whatever she needed to.

The benefit of having the TTC at mile 9 instead of mile 4 like the half marathon, and M slowing her normal race pace, is that I got to take a picture of her in the daylight. Unfortunately, half-asleep me timed it badly, so enjoy this picture of M's arm waiving at me from behind another runner.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

After Saturday's breakfast on the go debacle, I decided to grab something at Captain Cook's and just sit and eat it quickly. (Alternate Trip report title: How many meals can I eat at the Polynesian?) I settled on the Tonga Toast- almost as delicious as what is served at Kona Cafe, but for $6.00 cheaper. All that's missing is the strawberry compote they serve at Kona.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

After seeing M at mile 12.5, I decided to try a different route to Hollywood Studios than I had the day before. I grabbed the monorail from the Poly all the way around the loop to the TTC. Then grabbed another monorail back to EPCOT. I LOVED having security scan me at the Poly and not have to go through it again when entering EPCOT. So great! EPCOT had opened at 9 and it was about 9:15 or so when I entered, thinking I'd try to catch a ride on my way to HS. First up- Spaceship Earth. Which was down. Then I thought I'd try Journey into Imagination, since that almost never has a line. Which was down. So I gave up- walked over to the International Gateway, grabbed the Skyliner and made it to Hollywood Studios.

The lines for all the rides were crazy, so I decided to grab my favorite Hollywood Studios snack and find a spot in the shade to cool off and rest for a little bit.

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

This was my first time getting the Carrot Cake Cookie from Starbucks. I didn't like it as much as I remembered. The carrot cake part was very soft and mushy and the cream cheese icing didn't have very much flavor. I ate half of it, and threw the other half in my bag for M when she was finished running.

I saw her outside the entrance to Hollywood Studios and yelled- I'll race you to the International Gateway! With the few places to cross the marathon course, I lost quite a bit of time waiting to cross the street to get back to the Skyliner, and she made it to the IG while I was between the Riviera Resort station and the EPCOT station. I messaged that I would meet her back at the car, and I hurried through EPCOT, stopping only to grab a cold bottle of Powerade. She had her worst official marathon time ever (6 hours, 9 minutes), but she finished her 6th Dopey challenge and I was so proud of her!

We headed back to the resort for pool/hot tub time for M and a nap for me- except I couldn't settle down and fall asleep. I finally gave up and went to the pool and catnapped on a lounger for a while. Then it was time for me to pack up and head for the airport for the worst ride line ever!

Disney Marathon Weekend 2020, on Flickr

Does anyone like MCO? Is there ever a good time to fly out of there? I made it to the gate and they were boarding all rows, but we waited for a long time before finally everyone was onboard. I catnapped some more on the plane and landed around 10pm to a snowstorm. It was a chilly dash out to the car where I had left my winter coat/gloves and a long slow drive home, where I crashed into bed so I could be ready for work the next day.

Closing thoughts

To go into a Disney Trip with no FP+ reservations and no ADRs felt so weird- not how I'm used to doing Disney. I didn't really like it, but I might be able to get used to it, if I had to.

It was interesting to see what we could get for FP as a group of 2 with minimal notice- Alien Swirling Saucers was probably the least exciting Tier 1 FP choice, but the fact we could get any Tier 1 choices was cool.

ROTR consumed the weekend. The 2 hour return window is nice, but we spent so much time constantly checking on how the boarding groups were going and adjusting plans to fit that 1 ride in.

Sunday was a complete waste of a park day for me. Very frustrating to have multiple rides down in the first half-hour of park opening. Even if I had chosen to take the bus to Hollywood studios from the Poly, there is not a great way to get back to the front of EPCOT from there, especially with so many roads closed due to the race, so I don't regret using a park day to make things more efficient and keep my sister from having to wait at the car for me, but I cringe about the cost.

This was our first Disney race in Orlando where we didn't stay on property. I don't know about my sister, but from my perspective- never again. I love being able to sleep in a little because I can just catch a separate bus. Or on Sunday, I would have let my sister catch the bus back to the resort and I would have stayed at the park and ridden some rides or seen some shows.

While it was frantic and exhausting, it was worth every moment. M told me that it meant so much to her to have me there and kept her going, especially during the marathon when the heat & humidity were climbing. It is always fun to spend time with her at a place that means so much to us.

My hat is off to all of the runners! Congratulations to you all. Let's do it again next year. :)

Loved your report! A friend of mine ran the marathon (her first & last) and it's so neat to get your perspective.
Sounds like a crazy, rewarding and frustrating 50 hours. Thank you for sharing!
