i watched this last nite on the sundance channel. it deals with the disease wherein the brain does not process pain therefore the sufferer does not feel pain. they do however feel touch (and recognize textures, enjoy caressing, react to tickleing) and it is beleived pressure.

the documentary focused on 3 families each with a child varying from 4 1/2-9 years old and how this disease impacts the child and the family. showing how the children have damaged their vision by repeatedly as infants and toddlers poking themselves in the eyes (healthy baby learns it hurts and stops-these kids feel no pain so they dont), gnawing their fingers to the bone during teething (and chewing up the insides of their mouths during teething), dealing with bathroom issues (the older kids once actualy potty trained use wristwatches with alarms to remind them to use the bathroom)-tons of situations you just normaly don't associate as "pain" being a necessary physical indicator to your well being (the child who shows no sign of fever until it spikes and they have a seizure, the child who does'nt feel the pain associated with their shoe rubbing on a toe until the mom sees an open sore).

not depressing to watch-very encouraging to see how the families have adapted to addressing a disease that is very hard to diagnose and little research/treatment is available for.
