More accurately, Red River Hogs! We had four outside our latest room and loved them. They were in a temporary fenced enclosure though (illusion spoiled), due to construction in the middle distance (the animal barn photos posted elsewhere on this site). Every day in the morning and evening someone would open the gate to the enclosure, blow a whistle, and the pigs would line up and trot out of view, to be replaced by another set shortly afterward. We found out later that they were switching males and females daily.
So THAT'S what those things are. You mean for guests, or staff?
We had a private sunset savanna tour (it was true pixy dust that got it for us) in December 2004, right when they had just gotten the RED River hogs. The keepers were afraid of them and no one wanted to be the one to jump out of the truck to operate the gates because the hogs would chase them and try to bite! They were SO cute up close (even though they were mean) that they quickly became my favorite animal on the savanna.
And the "people fences" are for guests. They are at the stairwells so that if there is a fire or other emergency, guests can safely get outside but not be in contact with the animals on the savanna.
