Armed man arrest at Disney Springs garage on NYE

The only thing that made this newsworthy was the fact that he was carrying it concealed with out a permit from FL or a state with reciprocity.

He was entering the garage, which is legal, FL law allows a concealed carry holder to be allowed to secure a firearm in a locked container in your car when entering a place where you are forbidden to carry a firearm.

That could have been any lawful permit holder and it wouldn't have been illegal to enter the garage, secure the firearm and then head over to DS. If he actually had a permit, there would not have been anything to publish. He didn't and that's why you heard about it.

Because he was carrying concealed illegally, I fully support the OCSD and their actions.

Going to this story there was another man arrested for having a loaded pistol trying to get into animal kingdom about three weeks ago.

Why was there ? Terrorist?
He had a small handgun and 14 "bullets." I highly doubt that. As @cranbiz pointed out, probably not newsworthy, really. All he has been charged with is carrying a concealed firearm, and he has already bonded out. I'm sure he would have been charged with more if there was any reason to believe he was intent on committing a crime using the firearm.

And that is a horse of a different color. Weapons of any kind are prohibited inside a Disney park. Mistake or not, getting caught by security with a firearm trying to enter the park is a no no.

A couple of times, back when I was a CM, I completely forgot I was carrying my knife. I had to return to my car with it before entering the park.

Haven't seen this posted yet. Seems like guy was busted by a police gun detection K9. I know Disney run their K9s but are police K9s usually patrolling Disney Springs? Or was it just a special thing for NYE? Either way, kuddos to the doggy.

County Sheriffs and dogs have patroled Disney Springs for many years. What amazes me is that dogs can be trained to sniff out guns! That's a very good doggo.

They cant actually sniff out guns, they are trained to sniff out gun powder and gun oil. You could be at home legally shooting your own gun and if u dont wash ur hands with soap afterwards then u could get hit by a k9 from the gun powder on ur hands. I work at a place where no weapons are allowed whatsoever, not even an arrow from a bow. It just so happen that we got a surprise visit from the k9 unit looking for drugs and weapons in vehicles in the lot and one of the K9s hit my truck. I got escorted to my truck where I had to unlock the doors and stand back and watch em go through everything. Long story short, this happen in the fall during deer hunting season and the dogs were smelling the gun powder from where I shot my gun and then had my gun in my truck,. Talk about unbelievable, besides being confused at first why they hit my truck, I was amazed at how they could smell something like that, these dogs are definitely amazing.

They have K9's at the exits of the orange and lime garage escalators. I don't know if they are there every minute of every day, but they are always there when I go, which is usually weekends.

Worth noting though? Disney Springs is not a WDW Park. No Security barriers.

Disney is very firearms unfriendly but the issue here is while, if stopped, they will tell you firearms are not allowed at Disney Springs, it's not posted on property nor is it anywhere (except at the AMC theater which is AMC's policy) in any documentation that a guest has access to.

They are very upfront about it if asked about the parks and resorts, but seem to side step that question when asked about DS.

At DS, what they can do is ask that you return to your vehicle and secure the firearm before being allowed to return to DS proper or ask you to leave if you refuse. At that point, you would be informed that refusal to comply will result in being trespassed. FL law allows for a permitted person to be allowed to secure their firearm in a vehicle if they are at a place where concealed carry is not allowed by the property owner.

If a dog hits on you and you did secure your firearm properly, all they can say is thank you, have a magical day.

When I was having my bag checked at the TTC last week, the security guard looked around to make sure no kids were listening, and said that they had just confiscated a taser and handcuffs from someone. I guess he was trying to justify the security measures slowing everybody down, but it was so weird that he just told a bunch of guests that on our way into the park.

The issue however is that DS is technically speaking an open-air shopping mall, and Disney rules notwithstanding, it is a grey area in the eyes of Florida state law. Because FL is a concealed-carry state, and due to DS being open access (ie no security checkpoints), Disney rules and state law seem to conflict, and because of a lack of signage, it's easy to violate the rule, while with the right permit, simultaneously complying with state law regarding concealed-carry.

I don't disagree with you. If they wish for DS to be a gun free zone (and we know that criminals all obey the law), they really need to post it accordingly. That's bad for business though as they don't want to offend anyone who may spend money there.

I said exactly this to a cast member back in October. That I did not feel safe in Disney Springs, it was the evening after the marathons had finished and there were soooo many people, and obviously no check points or metal detectors in Disney Springs. If anyone wanted to do anything it would have been easily achieved. Also people without bags are not searched, someone could easily concealed a weapon and get unnoticed.

I want to feel safe and carefree when I'm in DW, I don't understand why they don't implement these basic upgrades.

What open mall do you go into that has check points and metal detectors? Disney Springs is a shopping and dining plaza with many entrances and exits. It's not a theme park with one or maybe 2 ways in and out.

Well to be honest I'm not American so i6 don't know, but if I were I would probably want them even in general Malls! Anyway this is still within DW the ammount of people visiting everyday is huge, certainly nothing like my local mall. In my opinion doesn't make sense to have the metal detectors in the parks and not at DS, if someone wanted to do something would just do it at DS.

Fair enough I suppose. Though it's just not going to happen. First off, a terrorist attacking Disney World is going to be much more impactful in news and terror than one attacking a shopping mall, even one with Disney's name on it. Though obviously at least one terrorist has been documented having thought about it. Second, putting metal detectors at all the entrances and exits, and people to man them, would be prohibitively expensive. Third, it would be a hassle to shoppers. There are lots of places to shop and eat in Orlando that don't require entrance lines and metal detectors and the hassle. There aren't any amusement parks that work the same way. So there are different expectations and, therefore, different barriers to entry. I promise putting metal detectors and security on Disney Springs would dramatically lower traffic, lower traffic lessens the appeal to stores and restaurants, fewer stores and restaurants means less to draw the remaining people... and what you have is a death spiral.
