Canadian Buffoon's Back to Front Vacation - Update! 05/18 - Falling Down

Port Land

It's one of those updates.
I have no idea where to begin
I'm no expert, but I think the start is a good place most times.

or what to say.
Wait...if that were true, we'd have nothing to reply to, so obviously....liar!

I did a grand total of two things.
All day.
I saw one thing.
I ate at one place.
You sit on a throne of lies!

And both of those statements
aren't even accurate.
See??

I had some breakfast at the hotel,
I presume.
I am positive I ate at two other
places... but only took a photo from one.
I also drove, so that's something,
although not as much as the last couple days.
I presume you woke up, brushed your teeth, shaved, packed, avoided road objects, passed someone on the right and any other number of things.

I still don't know where to begin, though.
You keep using that phrase....I do not think it means what you think it means.

Except it looks like I already did.
So that's a relief at least.
See??

I got up at some point.
I know this. Because I'm awake
right now. Ergo, I woke.
Told you.

I really only had two things on
the agenda for today.
One tourist spot in Portland to hit
before making my way up to
Seattle for the PNWMM.
(Pacific Northwest Mouse Meet)
Okay, maybe you're finally starting to tell the truth, but given the track record thus far, I'm not conviced yet.

First... time for a random picture.

wombat_zpshoq6myzz.jpg

I don't know much about
this baby rabbit.
But two things are obvious.
This baby rabbit must be
filled with wisdom...
And obviously a Kung Fu expert.
How could it not be?
Confucius bunny say Marvin who fart in church sit in own pew. Does he have symbols burned onto his wrists? Maybe grasshopper bunny?

I went to Portland's
Japanese Garden.
No way!!!! I'm flabbergasted! Wait, is that the same not at all surprised?

I know! I know!
"Oh come on Ponzie!
Not another one!"
Come on Ponzie, not another one! Oh wait, I've heard that before. Sounds familiar too. And maybe deja vu. Redundancy is good?

Yeah, Yeah... I know.
Last one.
I promise, okay?
We know how much you lie, so pardon me if I don't believe you.

Along the way I saw these...
Flowery type things.
(Actually, no. I'm not a botanist.
But I could play one in a movie.)
Did you stay at a Holiday Inn express last night?

Love this picture with the bees.

I got to the ticket kiosk
and paid for my two tickets.
Wow, you really porked out at the buffet, eh?

Two? You ask.
Yes. I needed one for moi.
And one for my camera tripod.
Oh, never mind.

I kid you not.
They gave me a tag
to affix to the tripod.
Okay, that's bizarre.

After some thought,
I actually didn't mind that much.
It prevents the park from being
cluttered with people using them
I suppose.
If you really want to use one...
then you're willing to pay for
the privilege?
Let's go with that.
Okay, we'll go with that.

So...photoshopped? Say it isn't so. Good picture. There have been times where I wish people weren't in the picture. Might need to remember this idea.

There was a path that zigzagged
up from that point to the building
that you can just make out
through the trees at the top of
the hill, in the above photo.
While I confess, I'm not a Japanese garden aficionado, I think of all of them you showed us, this one would be great...the variety of scenery and foliage makes it better (at least to me).

Those look dangerous. I vote lawsuit.

And the colours of some of the
trees were stunning.

DSC06412_zpsfi16obke.jpg
Really like the fall colors!!!

It's just the cold that causes it I don't care for.

I sashayed along the path
to the back of the tea house.
Did Marvin Sashay also...looks like he's just standing there.

I give you... the view:

DSC06414_zpsatmp86cj.jpg

(Yes... marred by the tall buildings,
but still pretty remarkable, nevertheless.)
Surprised there wasn't more photoshop magic.

But did you listen?
Noooooo!!!
Huh? Did you say something?

It was about this time,
that I noticed I'd lost
my tripod tag.
Ruh roh George.

I was assured that if they found it,
they'd return it to me, but in the meantime
my description had been passed to the others.

I never did get my tag back,
but I wasn't bothered again either.
Please leave the constipated looking Canadian guy alone??
Almost as bizarre as needing the tag to begin with. I guess if it's really busy, they don't want a ton of tripods taking up space and preventing people from moving about.

Nice! Not that the others weren't great, but I really like this one.

All in all...
This garden was amazing.
I definitely need to come
back again some time.
I can see why.

A chance to meet DIS-royalty?! Count me in!! :)

Yay!
Ariana mentioned that you'd
be there too and I thought
that was just great! :goodvibes

@pkondz I keep trying to follow along here and the DIS never gives me notifications when you've posted, so I was pages behind...again!!

Well, that just won't do.
I strongly suggest you
check back here at least
once an hour for the rest
of your life.

This seems reasonable to me.

I'm LOVING your beautiful photography along the way!!

Thank you!! :goodvibes

I'll try to keep up, and look forward to a chance to mee you in May perhaps! :)

Okay!
I'll be PMing everyone
who's responded soon.

Not sure if you're talking about @Pluto0809 or @pkondz that's royalty.

I had the exact same thought.
I was even going to say that,
but you beat me to it!

If the latter, I never realized the jester was considered royalty.
:duck:

:snooty:
I prefer court fool, thankyouverymuch.

:rotfl:Well, I've already met @Pluto0809 so... :joker:

:lmao:

Such beautiful pictures of a impressive garden.

Thanks, Vanessa! :)

Everything is so lush and pleasing to the eye. How old is this garden? All the vegetation is mature.

It was officially opened
in 1967.
I found this blurb on Wiki:

In a study conducted in 2013 by the Journal of Japanese Gardening, it was deemed the finest public Japanese garden in North America out of more than 300 such gardens surveyed by Japanese garden experts. The former Japanese ambassador to the U.S., Nobuo Matsunaga, said in 1988 that the garden was “the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside Japan.”

And the view towards Mt. Hood is amazing.

::yes::

I'm sorry you lost your bag, good thing it wasn't your phone.

No, no! Not Bag... TAG!
They gave me a little paper
tag on a string to put on my
tripod to show that I'd paid
for the use of it.
That's what I lost. No big deal. :)

Your TR is starting to remind me of Groundhog Day. :rotfl2:

I'm okay with that.
It's one of my favourite movies.

Seriously though, I do love seeing all of your pictures.

Thanks! :goodvibes

I'm okay with that.
It's one of my favourite movies.

No that's about the emptiest promise I think I've ever seen.

:rolleyes1

Well, it's the last one
in this TR...

... in this part of the TR...

... in that update.

I'm okay with that.
It's one of my favourite movies.

I use that secret all the time in my TRs. I have lots of "behind the scene" pictures that I never post but help me describe stuff or just remember what we did in what order.

Like this? ;)

DSC06394_zpsem9ywtjm.jpg

I see a little alien!

I believe the PC term is
"Visitor from another country".

:rolleyes1

Beautiful, all of them!

Thanks, Ariana! :)

;)

I'm okay with that.
It's one of my favourite movies.

Well, that just won't do.
I strongly suggest you
check back here at least
once an hour for the rest
of your life.

This seems reasonable to me.
Totally reasonable. Those Kindergarten students can teach themselves; they don't need me! :)

Also, I actually got THIS notification, so yay! Back on track.

It's one of those updates.
I have no idea where to begin
or what to say.
I did a grand total of two things.
All day.
I saw one thing.
I ate at one place.

Riveting. Truly.

I don't know much about
this baby rabbit.
But two things are obvious.
This baby rabbit must be
filled with wisdom...
And obviously a Kung Fu expert.
How could it not be?

I can't argue with you in the least. I feel like the little guy would be at home with a lightsaber.

I went to Portland's
Japanese Garden.

I am shocked. Good thing I was sitting down.

I kid you not.
They gave me a tag
to affix to the tripod.

After some thought,
I actually didn't mind that much.
It prevents the park from being
cluttered with people using them
I suppose.
If you really want to use one...
then you're willing to pay for
the privilege?
Let's go with that.

I guess this must have become a real problem. Trying to imagine how many tripods constitutes a problem.

There were a lot of people
coming and going and
that particular photo
is actually an amalgamation
of four separate photos.
Each taken to reveal an area
not cluttered up with people.

Totally worth the effort, then.

I love bonsai. I find them fascinating.

Me too.

I still haven't quite decided if
these stairs are really cool...
Or a law-suit waiting to happen...

Looks to me like there are both adult and children's sides to the stairway.

It was only then, when I looked at
the map enclosed in the pamphlet
that I realized that I hadn't even
seen the garden yet.
The entrance was just around the
corner from the café I was sitting at.

:rotfl2::rotfl2: Well, it's a good thing you looked at the map!

Wow, that looks so unique! Love the color.

Awesome view!

But did you listen?
Noooooo!!!

Listen to what? Huh?

I explained that I had purchased one
(and even remembered the tag number.)
The young man quickly got on his
radio and announced that a guest had
lost a tripod tag and to be on the lookout.

I wasn't quite sure whether to be
shocked that the tripod rule was
enforced or amused by it.

This is serious business. They probably let a dozen people with guns into the gardens, but those tripods are tightly controlled.

The grounds were huge.
Easily the largest Japanese
garden I'd ever seen.
It covers an astonishing
twelve acres.

Holy cow. That's really worth the price of admission.

I'll just stop there. That's my favorite spot.

Thanks for the garden tour, though. It looks amazing.

About two and a half hours
later, I stopped in Olympia, WA.
I'd done a quick Google search
for someplace to eat between
Portland and Seattle and the
Iron Rabbit Restaurant and Bar
came up.

Looks like your link is broken there.

Did you see it in this chapter?

::yes:: Is that a popular spot for giving speeches to the masses?

I'm no expert, but I think the start is a good place most times.

What do you know?
You're no expert!

Wait...if that were true, we'd have nothing to reply to, so obviously....liar!

Starting to understand
how this TR works?

You sit on a throne of lies!

Well, I did sit on a throne
this morning. So... sure.

Yeah, yeah.
Rub it in.

I presume you woke up, brushed your teeth, shaved, packed, avoided road objects, passed someone on the right and any other number of things.

Ha!
That day I slept walked,
flossed and rinsed with mouthwash,
skipped the shave, was already packed...

But the rest is accurate.

You keep using that phrase....I do not think it means what you think it means.

Sorry, Inigo.

Nope. I was looking
the other way.

Told you.

Sorry, what?
Wasn't listening.

Okay, maybe you're finally starting to tell the truth, but given the track record thus far, I'm not conviced yet.

You're learning! Good for you!

Confucius bunny say Marvin who fart in church sit in own pew.

:lmao:

Does he have symbols burned onto his wrists? Maybe grasshopper bunny?

Such a good show.
He passed away under
very... uh... different circumstances.
Don't know if you knew that.

No way!!!! I'm flabbergasted! Wait, is that the same not at all surprised?

Almost exactly.

Come on Ponzie, not another one! Oh wait, I've heard that before. Sounds familiar too. And maybe deja vu. Redundancy is good?

Absolutely!

Come on Ponzie, not another one! Oh wait, I've heard that before. Sounds familiar too. And maybe deja vu. Redundancy is good?

Absolutely!

We know how much you lie, so pardon me if I don't believe you.

:rolleyes2 Who. Me???

Did you stay at a Holiday Inn express last night?

Well, not according to
the map I posted.

Love this picture with the bees.

Thanks! :)

Wow, you really porked out at the buffet, eh?

But they had free waffles!

Okay, that's bizarre.

I'd never seen it before,
or since.

So...photoshopped? Say it isn't so. Good picture. There have been times where I wish people weren't in the picture. Might need to remember this idea.

Yep. I've done that on occasion.
Usually I don't mind people in
photos. Ads perspective and/or
interest.
But here I wanted a blank canvas.
You can pretty much only do it
with a tripod, though.

While I confess, I'm not a Japanese garden aficionado, I think of all of them you showed us, this one would be great...the variety of scenery and foliage makes it better (at least to me).

It was pretty impressive.

Those look dangerous. I vote lawsuit.

All right! I'll push you down
the "stairs" and we'll split
the money 50/50!

Really like the fall colors!!!

It's just the cold that causes it I don't care for.

I wondered if anyone would
say that.

That photo was taken on July 12th.

Apparently in fall it really turns red.

Did Marvin Sashay also...looks like he's just standing there.

He's holding court.
Or trying to.

Surprised there wasn't more photoshop magic.

I considered it, but...
That's too much of a... lie?
It wouldn't be really accurate,
I guess.

The earlier 'shopped photo is
accurate. It shows exactly what
you'd see if no one was there.
But you couldn't see Mt. Hood
without the buildings in the way.

Please leave the constipated looking Canadian guy alone??

:rotfl:

Almost as bizarre as needing the tag to begin with. I guess if it's really busy, they don't want a ton of tripods taking up space and preventing people from moving about.

There were two reasons, I believe.
1. It prevents too many tripods
from interfering with the Zen
relaxation of the park... which is
supposedly the whole point. And;

2. Revenue.

Nice! Not that the others weren't great, but I really like this one.

It's my favourite, actually. :)

Riveting. Truly.

No.
This is riveting.

I saw one thing.
I ate one thing.
And that thing was...
A PB&J sandwich.

I can't argue with you in the least. I feel like the little guy would be at home with a lightsaber.

Hard to defend against
a light saber with Kung Fu.
Tend to keep losing arms.

I am shocked. Good thing I was sitting down.

Sorry. I should've
telegraphed that a
bit more.

I guess this must have become a real problem. Trying to imagine how many tripods constitutes a problem.

Easy answer.
Any more than mine.

Totally worth the effort, then.

Yup.

Looks to me like there are both adult and children's sides to the stairway.

I prefer to think of it
as ankle breaking and
non-ankle breaking.

:rotfl2::rotfl2: Well, it's a good thing you looked at the map!

I kid you not!
I was all set to leave
after I'd finished eating.
No lie! I really was!

Wow, that looks so unique! Love the color.

Apparently in Fall it's
absolutely stunning.

Awesome view!

::yes::

Listen to what? Huh?

When?

This is serious business. They probably let a dozen people with guns into the gardens, but those tripods are tightly controlled.

As long as you don't attach
a camera to a gun, I'd be
okay with that.

Holy cow. That's really worth the price of admission.

::yes::

I'll just stop there. That's my favorite spot.

And my favourite photo. :)

Thanks for the garden tour, though. It looks amazing.

Glad you enjoyed it! :goodvibes

Looks like your link is broken there.

Thanks. Fixed!
Also
No one else obviously
clicked on it.

Gives me an idea
for a future chapter...

::yes:: Is that a popular spot for giving speeches to the masses?

Define... "masses".

No brain space to figure out quotes today. My 15 month old decided she was too good for her usual 7pm bedtime. Instead, she preferred 9pm. :faint:

That Japanese garden looked beautiful! If I ever end up in that area of the States again I'm going to check it out. Which leads me too...

I've been to Seattle. This past February...during the that nice winter storm they had...with said 15 month old...stuck in the airport for 6 hours... (our original itinerary was 13 hours door to door. It took us 58 hours. And our bags didn't show up for another 24 hrs.) So not planning on heading that way for a while lol. I mean it really wasn't Seattle's fault, but I still need a bit more time to get over that trip. I'm hoping some of your nice pictures and stories might help me change my mind!

No brain space to figure out quotes today. My 15 month old decided she was too good for her usual 7pm bedtime. Instead, she preferred 9pm. :faint:

Ahhhh… yes.

The only thing I know
for sure about little ones...

Is that as soon as you figure
anything out about them...

It changes.

That Japanese garden looked beautiful!

It really was!

If I ever end up in that area of the States again I'm going to check it out. Which leads me too...

Yes you should. :)

I've been to Seattle. This past February...during the that nice winter storm they had...with said 15 month old...stuck in the airport for 6 hours... (our original itinerary was 13 hours door to door. It took us 58 hours.

OMG. :faint:

And our bags didn't show up for another 24 hrs.)

Talk about adding insult to injury.

So not planning on heading that way for a while lol. I mean it really wasn't Seattle's fault, but I still need a bit more time to get over that trip.

Totally get that.

I'm hoping some of your nice pictures and stories might help me change my mind!

:)
I hope they help. :)

It's one of those updates.
I have no idea where to begin
or what to say.
I did a grand total of two things.
All day.
I saw one thing.
I ate at one place.

Oh, it's going to be one of those....

I still don't know where to begin, though.
Except it looks like I already did.
So that's a relief at least.

I'm hanging on the edge of my seat....trying not to fall asleep....

I don't know much about
this baby rabbit.

That's a rabbit?

And obviously a Kung Fu expert.
How could it not be?

Well he's not a Sumo Wrestler, that's for sure!

I know you're going
to be completely
flabbergasted by this.
And only because
"flabbergasted" is also
a fun word to say.

I went to Portland's
Japanese Garden.

I think in the future when you give us a "why did I come here?" Question, the standard answer should be, Japanese Garden.

Along the way I saw these...
Flowery type things.
(Actually, no. I'm not a botanist.
But I could play one in a movie.)

Sounds legit.

Two? You ask.
Yes. I needed one for moi.
And one for my camera tripod.

I kid you not.
They gave me a tag
to affix to the tripod.

I can't even imagine what sort of situation caused this policy to be enacted!

Could I have taken that shot
without the tripod?
Actually... no.
There were a lot of people
coming and going and
that particular photo
is actually an amalgamation
of four separate photos.
Each taken to reveal an area
not cluttered up with people.

I'm going to be seeing if I can do this with a shot from my last trip. I couldn't get people to leave the shot. Whether or not I kept the same camera angle for all the shots remains to be seen!

It was not like any Japanese garden
that I had ever seen.
They really incorporated the natural
flora into it!

Interesting!

I ordered something, no idea what.
(This is crack TR reporting folks!

I can tell! I am riveted in my seat, waiting on baited breath for the next facts!

It was only then, when I looked at
the map enclosed in the pamphlet
that I realized that I hadn't even
seen the garden yet.

Doh!

And the colours of some of the
trees were stunning.

Are those Japanese Maple? Mr. Plays a botanist on TV?

The large area in front
was to accommodate the
groups of people that would
stop to admire the view.

Or a wedding or some other large gathering....

I told you that Mt. Hood
would make another
appearance in this TR.

And j believed you!!!!!!

Of course, no Japanese garden would
be complete without the requisite
Zen rock garden.
This one was over the top pretty with
the perfectly sculpted trees/bushes
surrounding it.

Definitely pretty!

The grounds were huge.
Easily the largest Japanese
garden I'd ever seen.
It covers an astonishing
twelve acres.

That is a large one! Don't know how large the one near me is since you've visited twice and not asked me to go n I'll r asked the overall size.

I ordered the Drunken Sailor
(blackened spiced tiger shrimp,
Alaskan true cod; rum cream sauce,
pepper jack cheese, 03/12 Orlando trip (RCSFZM): Get prepared to fly! mashed
potatoes, house-made focaccia
)
with a side of Dungeness crab bisque.

Rum? And you ate it?

Did you see it in this chapter?

Yes I did, he was wating for the drum reception.

He's going to have a veritable
stampede of DISers coming down
if he keeps offering cheesecake!
::yes::

Ergo, I woke.
(Not that you'd guess that from
the quality of the writing thus far.)
:rotfl2:

I arrived in the morning and
had a bit of a surprise finding
parking.
I just assumed it would be
easy, I guess.
Maybe it's a setup. They figure that your transformation into a perfect zen-like state (from parking related stress) is more impactful :scratchin

Absolutely GORGEOUS photos! I had to laugh at their enforcement of the tripod ticket... radioing it in might have had me suppressing a giggle or two. But I'm glad you persevered... your photos made it quite worth it :thumbsup2 :goodvibes

Oh, it's going to be one of those....

'Fraid so.
Sorry!

I'm hanging on the edge of my seat....trying not to fall asleep....

I should market my TRs
as sleep aides!!!
I'd make a killing!

Which would enable me
to travel more...
and write more TRs!...
Er… Sleep Aides.

That's a rabbit?

That's what it is.
Can't you see the resemblance?

Well he's not a Sumo Wrestler, that's for sure!

Well, geez!
He's just little!
Give him a few years.

I think in the future when you give us a "why did I come here?" Question, the standard answer should be, Japanese Garden.

You'd be right more often
than you'd be wrong.

I can't even imagine what sort of situation caused this policy to be enacted!

I can.
The place is huge
and visually beautiful.
I wouldn't be surprised
if on weekends it was
overrun with weddings
and other celebrations.
That would seriously detract
from the serenity of the garden.

I'm going to be seeing if I can do this with a shot from my last trip. I couldn't get people to leave the shot. Whether or not I kept the same camera angle for all the shots remains to be seen!

Good luck!
Let me know how it goes. :)

I can tell! I am riveted in my seat, waiting on baited breath for the next facts!

New! Ponzie's EZ Sleep Read!
Guaranteed to knock you out
before you've finished the first...

facepalm_zpsb4hvgtwd.gif

Are those Japanese Maple? Mr. Plays a botanist on TV?

Oh, sure. Absolutely.
Yep. No doubt about it.
You can tell by the
shape of the leaves
and the colour of the
ground surrounding it.

Or a wedding or some other large gathering....

::yes::

And j believed you!!!!!!

Well, then j was right!

Definitely pretty!

::yes::

That is a large one! Don't know how large the one near me is since you've visited twice and not asked me to go n I'll r asked the overall size.

It's 1.3 acres.

And I've not asked you
to go with me for two reasons.

1. I didn't think you'd want to.
(been there done that syndrome)
2. I haven't been yet.
It was on my agenda, but I ran
out of time.

Rum? And you ate it?

I have a feeling that either
the rum wasn't on the menu
at the time I ordered it, or...
I presumed that it wouldn't
be overly strong.
If it was there... I didn't taste it.

Yes I did, he was wating for the drum reception.

;)

Maybe it's a setup. They figure that your transformation into a perfect zen-like state (from parking related stress) is more impactful :scratchin

Ooohhh...
Clever of them!

Absolutely GORGEOUS photos!

Thanks! :goodvibes

I had to laugh at their enforcement of the tripod ticket... radioing it in might have had me suppressing a giggle or two.

"Headquarters, we've got
a situation down here..."

But I'm glad you persevered... your photos made it quite worth it :thumbsup2 :goodvibes

Thanks, Tracy. :)

Exactly! I see no problem with this...everyone is smiling and happy!

There you go.
Tape the little demons
up on the wall.

It's a win/win.
They'll be happy
and you can check
my TR every hour
and nap in between!

And I appreciate it! Nice when technology works for a change!

You're welcome.
(No guarantees that
they won't mess it up
again.)

And obviously a Kung Fu expert.
How could it not be?
I see a movie idea. Kung Fu Panda 4: Kung Fu Rabbit.

Yeah, Yeah... I know.
Last one.
I promise, okay?
Are you sure about that?

Along the way I saw these...
Flowery type things.
Your botany skills seem to be as perfectly honed as mine.

Two? You ask.
Yes. I needed one for moi.
And one for my camera tripod.

I kid you not.
They gave me a tag
to affix to the tripod.
Ummm...yeah, strange. Like Mark said, what situation could have possibly unfolded to necessitate this.

I love bonsai. I find them fascinating.
You can use native or non-native plants.
And some can be quite old.
I like them too. Although had it not been for the Karate Kid movie, I wonder if I would even know what they were.

I ordered something, no idea what.
(This is crack TR reporting folks!
You're not going to find a more thorough
TR anywhere else on your screen right now
until you gratefully tab to another one.)
It's detailed reporting like this that I come here for.

It was only then, when I looked at
the map enclosed in the pamphlet
that I realized that I hadn't even
seen the garden yet.
The entrance was just around the
corner from the café I was sitting at.
Wow, good thing you noticed the pamphlet. Imagine if you had just left.

"Excuse me. If you want
to use your tripod, you need
to pay for that at the ticket booth."

I turned around to see a young
man wearing what was obviously
an employee uniform, gazing
at me myopically.
Colour me stunned. As wacky as it is having to buy a ticket for your tripod, I would never had guessed they had tripod police.

was assured that if they found it,
they'd return it to me, but in the meantime
my description had been passed to the others.
I have a sense you may be a fugitive in Japan now. If you ever plan a trip to Tokyo Disneyland, watch out at Immigration. You have enough trouble as it is.

Yeah... it was as good
as it sounded.
I'd go back. :)
I must admit that I'm not a seafood fan. Yes that's a bit strange coming from an east coaster.

Very impressive. I can see why it was given such high regards.

No, no! Not Bag... TAG!
They gave me a little paper
tag on a string to put on my
tripod to show that I'd paid
for the use of it.
That's what I lost. No big deal.

I'm so happy it was a Tag not a Bag. I'm blaming it on my over 50 eyes.
