Canadian Buffoon's DISmeet vacation - 09/14 - Bowled Over

Stay safe, dude.

Still alive, been very safe. Have 3 days of training right now which means short days but full 12 hour pay. Which is nice.

Cash is king.

That's why I am where I am.

First Toronto,
then south as far as Atlanta
before heading home.

Sounds like a nice trip.

How about a goodbye, too?

That would be good! It's only proper manners.

I'd have been there for at
least five hours.
Kinda had to keep going.
But...

Could've gone slower.

And/or taken breaks.

I gotcha, slower is better.

Because of weather?
Or because of your height?

mostly my height. This fellow today was awfully awkward about it asking questions and then when I tried to walk away he shook my hand and just smiled in a weird manner.

It really took me by surprise.
Someone mentioned it to me
and I decided to give it a look-see.
Glad I did. :)

Me as well!

Time to catch up on the most recent post. I am starting to get more of a routine going so I should be active again. I am also home in 8 sleeps. Ally thinks I am coming home the Saturday but she has brain surgery on the Thursday and I want to be there so I am surprising her by coming home early.

pimple faced tad

Was tad intentional as in tadpole or did you mean lad. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

So.... you get to pick one of the above.
Which do you pick?
Man... that is a tough call.

I am not a fan of newer corvettes but the classics I want them all.

Liesa made a lasagne

Top 3 dish, where was my invite :rotfl:

John Magda fought in
the battle of Midway in WWII
and was shot down, and ditched
in the Pacific.
He floated in a life raft
for five days before being rescued.

5 times the man I will ever be, at least.

They all flew this plane.

This is a really cool fact, I wish I could hop in it.

Wait what, that is the end. I am not ready. I don't have any other TR's that I read...maybe I need to read some. Oh I know what you are doing, you just want us to chant pkondz pkondz pkondz pkondz pkondz pkondz...theres supposed to be an encore now.

loud and shiny.

That works. :)

This one is my favorite! I love the retro feel and color.

Isn't that colour great???

I had a sinking feeling about this.

rimshot_zpsxgbdywf5.gif

But a guess a blessing since it improved attendance. Because everyone wants to see a sinkhole swallow up corvettes!

I'm not sure if they would
have wrecked those cars
on purpose even if they knew
their attendance would
increase so dramatically.

Wow you met the family! That's so nice!!
The DIS is all one big family, and how you've met the extended family!

Yes!
And they were super nice!
Which is no surprise
since Liesa is super nice, too. :)

Woah, that's super cool. :worship::worship::worship:

::yes::

Thank you for sharing pkonz!! Can't wait for the next one!

Thanks for reading Su-Lynne! :goodvibes

A craving of Corvettes?

Better than a "crash".

That is fantastic!

It really was!
So nice to be welcomed
into their home
and have a home cooked meal. :)

Wow! How lucky and amazing that this was right around the corner from where you were and even more surprising that it wasn't on your radar.

I know!
I was completely taken
by surprise.
Pleasantly so!

Thanks for taking us along on your road trip. I'm looking forward to the next one!

Thanks for reading, Dee! :goodvibes

Wishing you safe travels!

:car:

Thanks! :)

Well, had you been smacked in the face by a passel of Ford pick up trucks, that building would have been poorly named.

Sooooo….
Chevy trucks would've
been okay, then?

I appreciate the look of cars. But to be honest, I've just never been a car guy. I definitely like the older models as opposed to the newer ones (something that cannot be said for everything).

I like the older ones
by a wide margin.

I'm not really a car guy, either.
I can change a tire, but
don't ask me to do much else.
And when guys start talking
car talk... I'm usually lost.

Wow, that's incredible. Too bad they aren't able to repair all them.

I guess there just comes a point
where you're not restoring...
You're building from scratch.

Very cool. I'm fascinated by the space race and the early astronaut program. Or the present one, for that matter.

::yes::

Always entertaining. When and if you do another, I'll be sure to tag along.

Thanks Jeff! :)

Still alive, been very safe. Have 3 days of training right now which means short days but full 12 hour pay. Which is nice.

Nice!!

That's why I am where I am.

::yes:: That'll do it.

Sounds like a nice trip.

I'm just hoping I didn't
take on more than I can take.
Some days involve 13 or more
hours of driving.

I gotcha, slower is better.

mostly my height. This fellow today was awfully awkward about it asking questions and then when I tried to walk away he shook my hand and just smiled in a weird manner.

:sad2:
Maybe it's his first day
out of the institution.

Wait! What???
Stop!
What????
Ally is having brain surgery??????

Details, mister!

(unless you'd rather not share,
and that's okay too.)

Was tad intentional as in tadpole or did you mean lad. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Intentional.

Tad: late 19th century (denoting a small child): origin uncertain, perhaps from tadpole. The current usage dates from the 1940s.

I am not a fan of newer corvettes but the classics I want them all.

::yes::

Top 3 dish, where was my invite :rotfl:

It was there!
It's why I went.
She posted on her PTR/TR
(don't remember which)
that she was visiting her folks
and if anyone wanted to stop by...

I wasn't in the area, but...
well, what's a few more hundred miles.

5 times the man I will ever be, at least.

I think I can say that about
almost anyone from that generation.

This is a really cool fact, I wish I could hop in it.

Not me.
I don't think I'd feel.... worthy.

Wait what, that is the end. I am not ready. I don't have any other TR's that I read...maybe I need to read some. Oh I know what you are doing, you just want us to chant pkondz pkondz pkondz pkondz pkondz pkondz...theres supposed to be an encore now.

Well, Alison wants me to
write about my last Disney trip.

Yes, finished my last day of classes(elevated work platform). Ledcor paid for 3 classes worth about 800 or so in total plus my wage and I am only working for them for another 2 weeks and wont need then but hey I'm not complaining.

::yes:: That'll do it.

It did, it makes it all seem worthwhile.

I'm just hoping I didn't
take on more than I can take.
Some days involve 13 or more
hours of driving.

Those are long days but I have faith you will have a great time.

:cool1::cool1:

:sad2:
Maybe it's his first day
out of the institution.

Apparently he is the owner. He didn't say anything to me today except that I was a specimen and shook my hand again. I asked if this was the lab but he didn't laugh. It was awkward.

Wait! What???
Stop!
What????
Ally is having brain surgery??????

Details, mister!

Oh yes, she has some twisted blood vessel in her brain. It caused some stroke like symptoms(nothing lasting more than a few hours). Apparently it would probably not cause anything major but it is better safe than sorry so they are going to fix it. I don't know the details of that but I know she will not be completly under for the surgery and I want to be there for her.

Intentional.

Tad: late 19th century (denoting a small child): origin uncertain, perhaps from tadpole. The current usage dates from the 1940s.

The more you know.

It was there!
It's why I went.
She posted on her PTR/TR

and if anyone wanted to stop by...

I wasn't in the area, but...

I will need to go read it. I am always looking for more TR's

I think I can say that about
almost anyone from that generation.

So true.

Not me.
I don't think I'd feel.... worthy.

Maybe I still have a teenagers arrogance. I am worthy! Maybe...kind of...sort of...of course I am...I think.

Well, Alison wants me to
write about my last Disney trip.

Add me to that list. Your writing is something I look forward too.

But it sure won't hurt
on a future resume. :)

Those are long days but I have faith you will have a great time.

That's the plan, man!

Apparently he is the owner. He didn't say anything to me today except that I was a specimen and shook my hand again. I asked if this was the lab but he didn't laugh. It was awkward.

Shoot.
As the owner, you can't
really have too much
fun with him then.

Still.... odd.

And... your comeback
was pretty good!

I will need to go read it. I am always looking for more TR's

Hers are pretty good.
She's got a funny sense
of humour. :)

Maybe I still have a teenagers arrogance. I am worthy! Maybe...kind of...sort of...of course I am...I think.

:sad2:

Kids these days.
And stay off my lawn!

Add me to that list. Your writing is something I look forward too.

Well....

I was thinking...
It was my first MVMCP.

Oh, geez!
She doesn't know me from Adam,
but tell her I'm thinking of her, okay?

And you too.

I can say that because
it says so on the building
that I photographed.
So, just a quick trip to a Fast-Signs location and I can have you relating all kinds of false info…
You’d make an excellent plant for my grand plans of espionage.

Either that, or it was an
elaborate prank.
Shhhhhhhhhh!

I walked in and was
immediately smacked
in the face with a passel
of corvettes.
That’s goin’a leave a mark…

Hmmm... murder of crows...
parliament of owls...
smack of jellyfish...
prickle of porcupines...
(a personal favourite of mine)
I’ve always been partial to the collective for crows myself.

What do you call a group
of corvettes?
A roar of corvettes?
A blur?
A zip?
Well…
If I wanted to pay homage to the vehicles’ namesake I’d call them either:
a Fleet, a Squadron, or a Division…

If considering it from either a design or purpose aspect, then possibly:
a Curve or a Serpentine

If I were to choose a word based on the typical owner of one of these beauties…
Then it would be a Vanity.

.
Nevertheless, my curiosity
got the better of me
and my money
leapt out of my wallet
Well, mine would be leaping too…
‘Cause I ‘am’ one of those folk who would like to own one of these.
Specific versions of course, but I’m still in the category.

I passed the next few hours
drooling over fast cars.
It happens…
That’s why they have to clean and polish them pretty much daily.

So.... you get to pick one of the above.
Which do you pick?
A 62; last of the C1 Cove-Sides.
(But if you twisted my arm, I’d settle for that mist-green 1960 version that you saw back there.)

Guess I'm more into the classics.
Guilty as charged…
I’d also consider having one of the Rays, but after that, I’m not so much into them.

I then entered a large
domed area filled
with nothing but
wonder.
So, a Dome of Wonders rather than a Cave of Wonders?

Touch nothing but the Lamp.

Back in 2014,
a sinkhole opened
up in this room
and swallowed
eight corvettes.
I remember that…
All the Mustang Owner’s Clubs threw a big party in celebration.

All the Jag owners, just smirked, and went back to their pints.

If memory serves,
they won't fix all of them.
Too much damage…
Possibly examples that aren’t all that rare…
Maybe a decision to leave a couple as commemoration of the event.

I could be wrong.

I frequently am.
That’s why we all like you so much.
It lift’s our ego’s a smidge…

Well, not mine. I’m wrong far more often that you’d dream of being and worse yet…
I’m aware of the fact.

The sinkhole was a curse
and a blessing.
While it did destroy some
valuable cars,
the attendance shot up
from 150,000 to 250,000.
Oddly, this doesn’t surprise me.
It’s not the ideal way of getting your name into the public consciousness, but free national publicity can be a good thing.

She had put out
an invitation to one
and all for dinner
at her parents' house and...

How could I say no to that?
That was very kind of her and especially of her Folks.

Liesa made a lasagne and
a caprese salad.
Mmmmmm…
I’d have had to force myself to fight the instinct of sliding the whole casserole onto my placemat and defending the prize with the silverware from everyone else’s advances.

I was a guest in someone's home
and it just doesn't feel right
to start snapping photos of the food.
Yep…
Likely couldn’t do it either.

Right in Bowling Green, down an
unassuming road, lies a very small
aviation park.
As a fan of such things, I’ll mark that down in my possible road-trip notes.

John Magda fought in
the battle of Midway in WWII
and was shot down, and ditched
in the Pacific.
He floated in a life raft
for five days before being rescued.
After the war, he flew with and
was the commander of the Blue Angels.
(Navy demonstration flight team.)
He was flying a similar aircraft
to the one on display here,
when he was hit by ground fire
during the Korean war
and crashed into the sea
and was killed.
Among his decorations:
The Navy Cross, the Purple Heart
and the Air Medal with two Gold stars.
A fellow who deserves to have his story recounted.
Thanks for that.

The above plane, that exact plane,
has been flown by every single
Gemini, Mercury and Apollo astronaut.
Now that is very cool…
Nice examples of some interesting airframes, but I’d pretty much like to put a hand on that last one as well.

That's history right there folks.
And frankly, it gave me goosebumps
just being in its presence.
I’d be tickled to see it. Most NASA artifacts have a tendency to get my blood pressure up a mite.
But the two aircraft that gave me chills when I actually encountered them were a couple of particular B-29s. And it was more of a shuddering kind of chill than an exhilarating one.

On a side note…

Being as you’re in the industry and an aficionado of unique aircraft...
I’d offer while you’re in Charlotte to take you over to see the A320 that Sullenberger had to put down in the Hudson. Problem is the facility is only open between 10am and 4pm so it likely won’t fit into your current travel schedule.

(A group of campers set up
their tents on the beach.
Every day, when the cook would
ring his bell, people would eat and throw
food to the dolphins that would occasionally
swim just off-shore.
The cook began to call out:
"Dinner! For all in tents and porpoises."
Long way to go for a pun…

And I for one am proud of you for it.

Thanks everyone for reading along
on this long, but fun trip.
Thanks for writing about it; and for then sharing it with the rest of us poor shlubs.
Your yarns add some needed color on dreary days.

Did you see it in this chapter?
Oh, you probably did.
Did you see two of them?
Yeah, you might have.
But something tells me you
didn't see all three of them.
Well, I don’t know what aviation has to do with a 427-C2 Vette, but that’s the first thing I noticed.
Marvin had a nice second story view of the trio of 54’s as well.
And who’d have thunk that he was a veteran F9F pilot.

If there were more than three….
Then I missed ‘em.

The morning found me
in Bowling Green

Tuesday morning finds me there. :)

immediately smacked
in the face with a passel
of corvettes.

DSC04808_zpsne7wom5p.jpg

I am not sure if you know this or not.... or any of your readers.. .but this area is very special.

It is called (I am dead serious) The Nursery. It is where people who have bought a "Vette" and want a "factory pick up" come to claim their car. They drive it the mile or so from the factory and park it here and with great pomp and circumstance the driver gets a countdown and starts his engine there for the first time, revs his car, and is led out with company officials. I was lucky enough to get to see a pick up last visit. I was green with envy. Someday....

What do you call a group
of corvettes?

A hell of a lot of money.

Even nicer than the '59 on my thread I saw last weekend.

But this is my favorite of the lot. Front end is nicer.

If memory serves,
they won't fix all of them.

That is correct. Some weren't able to be and one or two weren't worth it.

an invitation to one
and all for dinner
at her parents' house and...

The offer still stands. :)

Her folks turned out to be
really nice people

They are. Very nice. Some of my lady friends will get to meet mom during the May trip.

Boy that was good!

 I can do a few things well. Lasagna is one of them... because Mommy taught me.

Liesa, it was really nice seeing you again
and meeting your delightful folks.

:goodvibes You as well!

has been flown by every single
Gemini, Mercury and Apollo astronaut.
You may recognize the names
Gus Grissom, or Alan Shepard.
John Glenn or Neil Armstrong.
They all flew this plane.

That was my favorite one too, if only for the story it has. ::yes::

So, just a quick trip to a Fast-Signs location and I can have you relating all kinds of false info…

Nah. I don't think that's possible.

Shhhhhhhhhh!

Whoops!

That’s goin’a leave a mark…

It's still there.

I’ve always been partial to the collective for crows myself.

Me too. Just so.....
sinister.

Don't let my Vette owners
or wannabe owners hear you!

‘Cause I ‘am’ one of those folk who would like to own one of these.
Specific versions of course, but I’m still in the category.

::yes::

That’s why they have to clean and polish them pretty much daily.

Sorry about that,
museum staff!

A 62; last of the C1 Cove-Sides.

Good choice(s).

Guilty as charged…
I’d also consider having one of the Rays, but after that, I’m not so much into them.

Pretty much.
Nothing past 67 for me.
But would take a brand new one.

So, a Dome of Wonders rather than a Cave of Wonders?

Touch nothing but the Lamp.

:lmao:

I remember that…
All the Mustang Owner’s Clubs threw a big party in celebration.

Okay... you serious Clark?

All the Jag owners, just smirked, and went back to their pints.

Let 'em.
I don't like Jags...
at all.

Too much damage…
Possibly examples that aren’t all that rare…

I think we'll get along
just fine when we meet up. :)

Oddly, this doesn’t surprise me.
It’s not the ideal way of getting your name into the public consciousness, but free national publicity can be a good thing.

Any press is good press.

That was very kind of her and especially of her Folks.

Very much so!
It was nice to just
sit and have a home cooked
meal in the middle of my trip.

Mmmmmm…
I’d have had to force myself to fight the instinct of sliding the whole casserole onto my placemat and defending the prize with the silverware from everyone else’s advances.

 Get in line!

As a fan of such things, I’ll mark that down in my possible road-trip notes.

Do that!

A fellow who deserves to have his story recounted.
Thanks for that.

I know!
And I knew of him... sorta.
I didn't know his name,
but I'm sure (well, pretty sure)
they showed that in the 1976
movie, Midway.

Now that is very cool…

1. Story on the Fortresses? (got one of my own)
2. Too bad. The Gimli Glider was scrapped in
2014. Tragic.

Long way to go for a pun…
