Hi! I was raised in Las Vegas and lived there for 17 years! (I still "live" there now but am in AZ for college)

There are a lot of great places to live here, the biggest and most popular is Summerlin, a master planned community in the west part of town. Summerlin is HUGE and it is where I spent almost 13 years, so it is a big part of my life! Homes in Summerlin range from $100,000 to $1,000,000+ so there's something for everyone. Is your daughter in high school? If so, there a three private high schools in Summerlin, Bishop Gorman (Catholic), Faith Lutheran, and the Meadows School (small, very competitive). There is also a couple public high schools which I am less familiar with. Palo Verde HS is located in the middle of Summerlin. Peccole Ranch is very close to Summerlin and also a great place to live, lots of parks and libraries. These areas are about 20 ish minutes away from the Strip and Downtown LV.

There is also Henderson and Green Valley, in the south and south east areas of town. There are several similar communities there including Anthem, Rhodes Ranch, and Southern Highlands. All of these communities and beautiful and in my opinion are great places to raise a family (and retire - no income tax :cool1:) Because I spent most of my childhood in the Summerlin area, I know a lot less about Henderson.

Let me know if you have any more questions! :thumbsup2:)

We live in the Henderson area and its wonderful. We are very happy raising our kids here. Its clean, safe, great schools and a great community feel. Its close enough to the Strip to access it easy but far enough away that we don't feel like we live on the Strip! My second choice would be Summerlin. But it just seems so far away! And for whatever reason I prefer the "look" of Green Valley (part of Henderson). More trees and such. But that's just me. Summerlin is very nice and from what I know, safe.
No matter where you live there is so much to do- parks, hiking, the Strip. We love it! And the short drive to Southern California and Utah! Lots of weekend trips nearby!

I'm glad to help! It really is a great place to live. But tough to figure out alone. I love helping others and pointing them in the right direction. DH and i came out alone and with no clue about where to go and what to do! Took many years to figure out where to settle! When do you plan on moving?

These are long term plans as we are from Australia and love the USA so want the chance to live there. Our daughter is finishing high school next November so we will start putting solid plans in place next year. It is super exciting!

Can't wait to be able to visit our favourite places on a more regular basis! :)

So glad I found this thread! Thanks OP!

DH is being heavily recruited to this area, and there is a possibility that we might also move.

What's the weather like?

What is there to do that doesn't necessarily involve the Strip? We really like indoor and outdoor museums, and nature-y activities. We are also Jeep people.

I made this move from Chicago area to LV in nov 2010. Will not go back. I bought a home on the far Northside in master build of Aliante. I had a few friends in the area and one was a metro cop who help us pick out an area. We like it here My autistic step son goes to high school in a program at Legacy. Even though Clark county schools are not the greatest we are happy with the program. Weather is also great for get the humidity of AL. I know it have relatives in Redbay and Hodges area. :). this was a choice move for me and love the weather. Even summer heat. As for homes prices are on the rise again. I bought 2 yrs ago when the bottom fell out we found a 3500sq ft 5 bedroom home with a pool 185k. same home is nearing 300k now. good luck with the move. PM me if your in need for some more info.

I've lived here my whole life. We live in the Lakes, which was the first mater planned community before Summerlin. We like it here, but it's older. Mountain's Edge is nice, but the schools are more crowded because the area built up too fast. The weather is hot, hot, hot in summer. Very hot in the summer. I truly hate the summer. It is nice in the fall and winter and spring though, which makes up for the summer. We have all the things here to do that normal cities have. My family's favorite is to go up to mt. charleston in the summer to get away from the heat and Red Rock in the winter to go hiking. There is a great Children's Museum and the Springs Preserve.

LOL lovebug33 I hear this from most natives. and they laugh at the "dry heat" thing. But sorry 6 to 8 weeks of heat means pool time for me. and it beats 6 mo for crap Chicago weather.

Henderson, Henderson, Henderson.

I've lived here almost 8 years now and it's the place to be in Clark County, as far as I'm concerned.

There are many great places to live in Las Vegas, it depends on what you are looking for, how much you want to spend, and what kind of commute you are willing to put up with. Since moving here with my family from New York in 1989 I've lived in Summerlin, The Lakes, Spring Valley, Silverado Ranch, and Aliante. OF all those areas, I prefer Aliante. It is in North Las Vegas, which is it's own city, and has a very small town feel even though there is no real distance between it and Las Vegas. You can get a lot more home and land for your money. NLV has a bad reputation because of its past, but Aliante, along with other master-planned communities such as Eldorado and the soon to break ground The Villages at Tule Springs, are far from the area with the bad history. The thing I like best about my community is that everyone is so friendly and talks to their neighbors. In all the other parts of town I've lived in, people kept to themselves and would avoid contact. People in my community always wave, they've brought treats over at Christmas time, and they come to others if they have a question or notice something. I'm nestled between two parks that I walk my dogs to and there are plans to build a third that will be just two streets over. We also have our own locals casino The Aliante which has many restaurants, a spa, showrooms, and a movie theater. The locals discounts at the spa are great! The problem with my community is that it takes me 35 to 45 minutes to get to work in the middle of the city. I bought my first house here in 2011. I hated the location and the idea of living in NLV, but I loved the house and the area seemed safe. I lived there for 4 years when I sold and bought my current house, less than a mile from the last one, in 2015. It's a 2200 sq. ft. house in a gated community. We paid 250K. The exact same plan by the same builder in Providence in the northwest part of town was over 350K. With the 100K difference, I'll be putting in a pool. Also, there is a pig farm in NLV that can sometimes be smelled, but they have announced that they will be moving further out of town in the next couple years. News agencies have reported that their move will increase NLV property values as we will never have to smell the pigs again. Before building our first house, we lived in an apartment in Providence and we also really liked that area. It would be our second favorite. My third would be Southern Highlands, but that is only from visiting friends over there, I've never lived in that area.

I think they are all settled by now. This thread is from 2014. It's okay we have all done this at some point.
