what our plan is to fly from Honolulu to LA and stay over in LA and then LA to Chicago

DH needs NS and theres no direct flights Hono to CHi there was a few years ago when we went

but the flight arent that good of times--

we could get a 2pm flight out but that gets you into LA at 11pm by the time wed get to the hotel we wont even get hardly any sleep

this trip seems to hard to put together--I cant seem to get anything good to come home

any other tips would be great thanks all

Dates? If there isn't a non stop from your origin airport to HNL or vice versa, check neighboring airports

I picked a random date in June and found United has a NS leaving HNL at 3:50P and arriving in Chicago at 4:59A.

The other option is to fly HNL to LAX, stay a day or two, then continue to Chicago.

There are non-stop flights from Honolulu to Chicago. You don't want to take them, but they are available. Most of the flights from anywhere in HI to the mainland are red eyes. No way around it.

I'm confused. Are you planning to connect at LAX, or literally stay over in Los Angeles? Anyway, United has both options, and on the connecting itinerary, you'd land at LAX at 12:06 AM, then depart for Chicago at 12:52 AM. No hotel necessary.

This is for one way on July 21, ymmv https://matrix.itasoftware.com/#view-flights:research=HNLCHI;out=2020-07-21;stay=0

If you will arrive at LAX at 11pm, and plan to stay the night, why not just book an airport hotel and book a flight home to Chicago mid-late morning/early afternoon the next day? You will get some sleep if you land on time at 11pm and don't have to rush in the morning. We've thrown around this scenario a few times, and this seems to be the best option. You just need to book your flights separately.

Alternatively, you can fly nonstop from Honolulu to San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Seattle... the list goes on. If you don't like the nonstop options directly to Chicago and are willing to fly elsewhere and stay the night, you have a lot of cities to choose from.

This is what we have to do. We fly in the day before to LAX and spend the night at an airport hotel then take Hawaiian airlines to Oahu. Same thing coming back but our next trip home, we will stop at Seattle and spend an extra day there since we have never been. Where I live, there are zero NS flights to Hawaii. We are just too small.
