Our First Trip as a Family of Four - A July 2017 PTR - Updated 6/26

Shopping & Packing Update

It’s almost Friday everyone! We are getting excited for the trip for sure!

In this update I wanted to put down some of the supplies we purchased this week from Amazon to use on our trip. It’s been a few years since we’ve been with a kid as young as DS1 so we had to re-purchase a few things.

First, DW had the great idea to purchase some stackable containers for snacks for the boys. It is obviously important to maximize space in the park bag now that we have to carry things like diapers and wipes again, so these containers she picked out are going to be really great to carry the kids snacks in.

Something else we really needed was a floaty for DS1. We went swimming the other day and he absolutely hated being held. He wanted down in the water...of course that isn’t an option. So, we searched for a floaty that we thought might allow him to kind of go on his own and came up with this option.

Hopefully it will allow him the freedom he wants in the water, while keeping him above the water! We have started swim lessons with him this summer and he loves the water, so hopefully this does the trip.

We are also traveling with a double stroller for the first time...I know, all of you with multiple kids are thinking…”suckers”! We do have the a sit ‘n stand front/back stroller that maneuvers pretty well that both boys can use. Of course those of you who travel with little kids know the hassle of gate checking your stroller when getting on a plane. We have always had a stroller gate check bag that protects the stroller a little, but mainly it makes it easy to pick out when we are getting of the plane. We just had to purchase a new one for the larger stroller.

Another thing we needed was this stroller fan for DS1.

It is obviously going to be hot in the summer so this will help keep him from getting to hot. My only problem is the dumb battery cover has a screw in it. Do they really think I can carry a screwdriver into the parks? I mean come on...I assume we can pack one in our checked luggage and we’ll just have to change the batteries at the resort from time to time.

Finally, we had to get a new stroller cover for the sit ‘n stand stroller. There were some made by popular brand names for just about $20, but we decided to get one from a company called Sasha’s for $39 on Amazon. The ones for $20 I kept reading reviews that they didn’t fit over the handles well and didn’t give any room for the kid on the back part of the stroller. This cover we did find markets itself as an alternative to those covers and it says it has extra room at the back so it is comfortable for all kids and extends a little closer to the bottom of the stroller for more cover.

We have also bought some new outfits for the kids and us, but you’ll see those in our trip pictures in a few weeks! Hopefully we have everything we need! Have a great weekend everyone!

I need to get going on figuring out what I have to buy for August!

We do have the a sit ‘n stand front/back stroller that maneuvers pretty well that both boys can use.
I had a sit n stand when the boys were younger; I actually think it was a fairly new "thing" then. Best stroller ever! Ricky was so happy to be able to stand, and I didn't have to worry about him running away from me!

DS5 likes that too. DS1 just likes riding in the stroller period, as long as you are moving. If you stop moving...it's on!

I leave in 5 days, and I haven't even put a list together...o_O

Well, I have to give credit DW. I hadn't even thought about this stuff either, but she made the list on Amazon for us to order. So she gets all the credit.

I just read your entire thread. How fun! What a beautiful family. I hope you guys have a fabulous trip!

Thanks for reading! Glad to have you here!

Day 14 Plans

Here are the plans for the last day of our trip. Also, I’m just too tired to mess with Photobucket tonight, so I’m just going to hit this quickly.

This is the day we are heading home, so we’ll have to check out of French Quarter in the morning, but we are heading to breakfast at 10:00 at one of our favorite places, Kona Cafe. I am very disappointed though that they took the big platter off the menu that included the macadamia nut pancakes. That was a great meal and now they don’t really have anything like it on the menu. I guess I’ll just have to get the Tonga Toast.

After we eat at Kona we will probably head to Disney Springs just to pick up any last minute items, and then take advantage of that boat back to French Quarter to catch our Magical Express Bus.

We don’t actually fly out until 6:00 PM, so we have until 2:30 or so before we need to be back at our resort and waiting on Magical Express.

That will do it for the plans. Coming up next I’m going to give a brief trip report of a trip to San Antonio for a conference, but I did some things other than just the conference!

Using this to test something. Getting fed up with Photobucket, so seeing if linking to my google photos will work. Not sure if I have to have these shared to "public" for people to see them. If you can or can't see the pic below feel free to let me know! I'd appreciate it

San Antonio Mini-Trip Report Part 1

I had a conference just a few days ago in San Antonio that I’m going to write a little mini-trip report on to help pass this last amount of time before our Disney trip, but it was certainly a crazy start to this trip. DW was supposed to go with me and we were leaving the kids at home for the first time ever with the grandmas. Well, the morning we were to fly out DW woke up and without going into any details we had to go to the Emergency Room and DW ended up having surgery. So, needless to say we didn’t fly out that day and DW wasn’t going to make the trip anyway.

Thankfully we were traveling with Southwest and they let me move my flight to another day without paying any fare different and we got a full refund, in the form of a future credit, on DW’s flight. We were going down a few days before the conference just to get away together so I was able to cut some of that out. Luckily, DW made it through surgery great and the recovery has gone well so far. So, I ended up delaying my flight and flew down the day before the conference.

In this update I am going to simply talk about my travel day as that is an entire update in itself after you see all that happened. Then I’ll do a part 2 later in the week with the rest of the trip.

So, I was up at 3:30 AM on the day I was to leave and my flight was at 6:00 AM. We boarded the plane on time and headed out to the runway. As soon as we got on the main runway the pilot came on and said they had just closed the airport at Dallas, where we were headed first. This is only about a 40 minute flight for us, so basically we weren’t leaving OKC until the Dallas airport re-opened after the storm.

Luckily, they let us off the plane and we sat back in the OKC airport until about 8:15 when we boarded again. So, this was my view for about 90 minutes until we got back on the plane:

c_G52hWt-FFc316G_OHoZUbC3SGUZ0iU_vu_O0Xdl9MHQJfzGnLihPIVeNIsmSaUeAEBvM7X8-q38PRLBT4KZfAPxSjqwxg2K5Sny5YJqhNNNHeg5aMNJfK3mIpfvH_gfs2f0pNueuhQV-7gsP9O4uIIpsIR_TpA5R6uH9Q_zLBxMXNhy5YaboPnzJWsXPWqnru8xXbV0K2t3dSgVeo6a4DkT1z81rTjD1TeBaoGtbK1wXncX2ezbmLMQ5lTcY46AEB9aFeYyLhVS5uQj2iFwhrflqq_MXKrbhxBD_nvbU2SSyKYR2RHZ7uJUQ2vYer1F95a7p_LCRa-rUSob2tlZYz0iwRJjbc7P47VDZySSr3SMvx-woHkhI2polH3ykXDUXTc7qz26ZqYYUSNeS7KxmT-BLwwhmW1J-d3wFbV9TdpLz4Nf8oxzGC78goXVg5jsSw-XrIoDEX_fj2xysqakcMQNWi-80g7fjpoB0ILlizSr-a2lEkzbOtrcyFnY4T7wlA9XtRCpRZ5DlqcqHi6oNJeZj_rx6ZDrLZzNC7xdgBICC4v27htzhOr2EdfpBSn1ss6kTAtI6jUmkew4EHMWujAGeZrsiypyMSXrtIDE0iYf7UeYT2ui1rPtDbcyGbsXzCyhoAb_rWG67ppWT1ZX0iSLNY2xQS4n5lMbO6TuOw=w470-h626-no

We finally took off about 8:40 and were in Dallas by 9:30, but it was the bumpiest flight I’ve ever been on due to the weather. Well, I just thought that delay was the start of a bad travel day, but...the delay had caused me to miss my connection by about 15 minutes. So, thus began a long day of sitting in the Dallas Love Field Airport along with a lot of other people who were in the same boat. Long story short they put me on the standby list to get to San Antonio, but the next flight was about three hours away. There were over 40 people on standby to get to San Antonio. I was 15th on the list as they have TV screens that show you the list. Well...14 standbys got on that flight to San Antonio, so I was left as number one on the standby list.

Long story short, I then waited as the first person on standby for two other flights before at 4:30 I finally got on as the only standby to San Antonio. Now, I say no standbys got on these flights, but that is not entirely true. Southwest employees automatically go to the top of the standby list, so standbys were getting on all of these flights, over 30 of them on the three flights I waited through, but me, the first person on the actual standby list never got on. I was a little bitter. I thought it was like if Disney only took people out of the fastpass line for a ride and never pulled people from the standby. But, I finally made it on!!!

By 5:45 I was in San Antonio. I picked up my Dollar rental car quickly and found my bag down by the baggage office. It had gotten to SAT way before me. I headed straight to the Embassy Suites, my hotel for this one night and got checked in.

As you can tell here, my bag sat on the tarmac while it was raining and so I had to lay out everything I had to dry.

I stopped by happy hour for a few minutes, but the snacks were the worst I’ve ever seen at an Embassy happy hour. We don’t drink so that part of the happy hour doesn’t interest me. After checking that out I decided I would head over to Six Flags Fiesta Texas since we have annual passes there. Pulling in the parking lot:

I headed into the park about 7:30 and went straight to Sangerfest Halle, the big food court in the park for dinner.

I ended up getting the Fajita Nachos. I can’t really get past that this is the Sangerfest Halle in the German part of the park and they are serving Mexican food. I know this isn’t Disney, but it still bothers me.

The nachos were ok for Six Flags food. Everything was hot, the fajita meat was seasoned ok, and the cheese was decent. After eating I headed to walk the park a little. I wasn’t planning on riding much as DW wasn’t with me and I really just wanted to watch their new nighttime fireworks show. I walked through most of the park and I may or may not have had a funnel cake, don’t tell my wife!

This is the crazy new ride at Fiesta Texas. I don’t even know how to explain it, but you couldn’t pay me to ride it!

I was getting super tired since I was getting up at 3:30 AM, but I wanted to see the new show. I had a rental car, but I was moving downtown the next day and I didn’t want to have to drive the 15 miles back out to Six Flags once I was settled in my hotel down there. So I rode a couple of rides to stay away and finally it was time for the new fireworks show, Celebrate! A Summer Spectacular. Let me say Fiesta Texas has always had a great nighttime show. The park is built in an old rock quarry so there are these big rock walls surrounding the park and they do some great projection and laser effects on the rock walls, and this new show took it to another level. Pictures won’t do it justice, but I have some.

This was a pretty cool waterfall effect and they had some World of Color type fountains, but they were hard to see from where I was.

So, by the time that was over I was finished with my travel day and it was 9:45 by the time I got out of the park and 10 before I got back to my room. Needless to say I collapsed on the bed pretty quickly. I’ll do one more post in a few days on the rest of the trip, which wasn’t quite as exciting since I was mostly at a conference.

Following along! I have 2 boys who will be about to turn 6 and 16 months on our Fall trip, so I definitely relate to your tour-break-tour procedure! We rode Astro orbiter on our last trip at DS's request and it was worth the 30 minute wait. A great view, especially at night! You have a beautiful family. Hope you have a great time!

Thanks for reading along!! We are getting excited. Let me know when your TR is up and running for your fall trip if you do one. Would love to read it!

Thanks for letting me know. I think I may not have had the photos in a public album. I've re-done all of the links and I can see them on my phone where I am not logged into my google account. Hopefully that helps. Thanks for reading & commenting!!

Pics fixed! I've been to the Dallas area 6 flags when we lived there, visited San Antonio (and seaworld there). And I worked at 6Flags in St Louis in HS. Fun parks for thrill rides.

Are you packed for your WDW trip yet?

Just caught up. All the plans sound great. I hope you enjoy trying out breakfast at Garden Grill. We had a good time with that and will be doing it again next time too.

Wow, what a rough travel day for your conference! Glad you got to see that nighttime show, though. And I hope your wife is recovering well! :goodvibes

We have Six Flags Great Adventure close to us in NJ, went last summer. The new coaster in Texas? It looks really similar to one in NJ which I rode with my nephew-yup, crazy!!! Most coasters don't bother me but I felt a tad unsettled after that :crazy2:

So are you all set for Disney?? I'd be happily doing my dance right now if I were you!!

Great to hear about Garden Grill! We are looking forward to that breakfast for sure.

It was a LONG day, but it ended up being ok. I got to see the fireworks show and DW is doing great on the recovery.

Yeah, I think Six Flags puts those new rides in several parks when they roll them out. I definitely wouldn't do that thing!

We are getting there. My trip and DW's medical procedure have us a little behind. Alright, we haven't even started packing yet, but we are going to get there. We do have all the laundry done, so just need to get stuff laid out now. Our goal is to get the kids stuff done tonight and work on our stuff tomorrow.

We are getting excited though!!! Only two days!!
