Food and Wine Tequila Lunch

Okay guys, let me just tell you, that I was hands down super impressed by this lunch and I would totally do it again! I went into it with low expectations, as I am not a big Mexican food person, although my husband is, and I was uncertain how I felt about tequila, since it sometimes tastes like cigarettes to me. I booked it because I wanted to learn about tequila, it fit into our schedule, and I wanted to do a special Food and Wine event. Oh. My. Word. The food was SO damn good. And let me tell you, it was not the tequila talking that made me feel that way!

We started off with a classic margarita, which was REALLY good and smooth.

That little shot glass was vodka, which we drank to clear our palette. We learned how to properly test tequila, which involved taking a deep breath, then taking a small sip of the tequila, swishing around in your mouth and then swallowing it. This keeps it from giving a burning feeling. We also smelled the items on the platter when we tasted certain tequilas. This was so we could pick up on flavor profiles of each tequila as we tasted them.

Our host was oh-so-easy on the eyes! I snuck one picture, which does not do him justice. From online reports I had read, I was expecting Hilda, a female host, so I was surprised to see a gentleman. This was Humberto Soto, who is a tequila master. If you look closely, you can see that he is wearing a tequila horn around his neck. He was very informative.

I am not a big seafood person, but it is something I have been working on developing. This Swordfish Ceviche was my husband and my favorite dish.

This next dish, Huarache de Hongos, was also great. It had crispy prosciutto, micro gtreens, red masa, oyster mushrooms, and truffle oil. It all went together so perfectly. The bottom of the masa was cripsed and the top was warm and soft.

This meal was amazing. Every dish spoke to me and was so damn good! I know this might sound crazy to some, but it ranks up there with my Victoria and Albert’s meal. *hears jaws drop* For real. I have never eaten at this restaurant before La Hacienda de San Angel, so I have to know… is the regular day-to-day food at all like this special event? I was so pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it so much. This is a total recommendation, especially at $85 per person.
that all looks amazing - your photos are fantastic! so glad you enjoyed it!!!

Thank you for reading! I realized that my tequila lunch photos turned out so awesome because I was seated right next to the window and had a lot of beautiful natural light that day :-)

I am trying to wrap up this Dining Report because we are about to embark on another Disney adventure soon.

Victoria and Albert's: Part 1

I had a touring plan alert for V&A for my birthday. And what do you know, it came through! But it came through on the night we had our first Disney After Hours planned. Having been to V&A once before, I knew the meal would take about 3-3.5 hours. The meal was scheduled at 5:30 PM. So I figured eat from about 5:30-9:00, pop over to our hotel room next door and change and head to the parks, maybe being a little bit late. I was okay with that, because I knew this was the only time that my husband and I would be able to share this experience for a very very long time (we always travel with our kids).

So off we went! My husband does not have to dress up for work, and is not very keen on doing the suit and tie deal, but he did it for me….and to follow the V&A dress code. ;) I wore a long black dress, a shawl, and a gorgeous necklace that I borrowed from my MIL, as she crafts jewelry. We were seated towards the back of the main room. Our servers were an older woman and gentleman, both who were very nice. However, as the evening wore on, their attentiveness was delayed by other tables and eventually it was mostly the woman serving us. And the time gaps between dishes towards the end began to take a very very long time. The last (and first) time I was there, my friend and my dishes came out perfectly, just enough wait in between that it was satisfactory and allowed for digestion, without it seeming like a long wait. Our waiters were great. This time, it was 9 PM and we were just starting our dessert courses and coffee/tea, and my husband had to ask them to pick up the pace, which still took them forever to do and bring us the bill. I had previously read an article where a V&A chef had said that they did not want to do a 4 hour meal. My faded memory thinks it might have been because he said it was too long for a person to sit? Anyway, we had broached the 4 hour time frame. I enjoy food, I enjoy fine food, I don’t mind sitting and dining for a few hours, but this was looooong and I believe is what impacted what happened to me after dinner *cue anticipatory horror music dun dun DUN!*

Last time, I did the wine pairing. This time, I opted to do the non-alcoholic beverage pairing. I thought they would have interesting drinks and it was cheaper to try. While I enjoyed most of the drinks, I did not realize they would be full-size drinks with every meal. The wine pairing is smaller pours. In an effort to pace myself and save room for food, I did not drink all of the drinks. I sampled them and drank various amounts. I think this annoyed the female server. I saw a look of annoyance flit across her face when she removed an almost full glass of what she had previously said was her favorite drink. I simply did not like the drink as it was too sour/tart and was irritating my mouth (there had been A LOT of tart drinks at Harambe nights, so my mouth was a little sensitive to too much acid). She quickly masked her face, but it made me feel a little bad and wasteful. I had not said anything negative about any of the drinks to warrant a look. At one point, I had multiple glasses of liquid all of the table, instead of them being removed at each course, like they do with the wine pairing. Though, to be fair, I drank all of the wines, and this time, I simply could not drink all of the liquid. While I think the amount of drinks was a good deal, I would not get it again. I instead would order two of the drinks I like best or do the wine pairing.

The food, of course was amazing. But if I am being completely transparent here, I liked the previous meal I had at V&A better. I think it suited my tastes a bit more. I reordered the fish add on this time and it was better back in January. It was a little saltier this time and the sauce was just a little different- maybe less or maybe not as creamy? I am nitpicking here, but when you pay for an extremely expensive meal, you might be a little more critical. Don’t get me wrong, still delicious and wonderful! That said, my bug to eat here has been fulfilled and I don’t forsee going any time in the near future. Maybe as a graduation gift for my foodie daughter, who is currently 11, as this is right up her alley.

Now onto the food porn pictures!

This blood orange drink was one of my favorites. I did drink all of this.

The following photos are caviar. We had never had caviar before and decided to splurge, with my reasoning that if we are going to try it, we might as well try it the right way with all of the best accompaniments. You could spread these toppings any combination that you wanted. It was very good! And those crackers, oh my word. Buttery crunchy goodness.

International Caviar Tasting- This was an add on.

Those thin crackers were my favorite. The caviar is the dark stuff in the middle plate. Those little round disks were like little pancakes.

This has over 100 year old balsamic vinegar on it that was from the chef’s personal collection They put it on your plate with a special dropper. I love balsamic vinegar, so this was great! I cannot even explain the fancy molecular gastronomy they have going on here, because I suck and didn’t take notes. But see those blobs? Those were made from juicy homegrown tomatoes and when you bit into it, it burst in your mouth into a wonderful symphony of flavors. This was a great dish.

You are not allowed to take flash photos, which is a bummer when you are seated in a dim room, as you cannot do food pictures justice!

And that concludes our lovely birthday meal. Onward we went to DAH, where my husband asked to do Mine Train first. We did and it triggered my motion sickness, which manifests as a kind of dizziness/off kiltered feeling in my head. Because you could walk off the ride and immediately get right back on, he asked to go again. I was not sure about that, but agreed, because really, when can you do that on Mine Train? Well, that really messed with my head. Bad. Like so bad, that I could not go on a fun ride again. It was so bad, I thought about going to a park desk to get a refund. My husband was nice and we tried to ease me back into by going on Jingle Cruise, Winnie the Pooh, etc. Even Peter Pan messed with my head! I tried to drink some carbonation and eating a little salty popcorn to settle myself. Still couldn’t go on a ride. I send him off to ride Space Mountain while I rode by myself on the People Mover…. Multiple times, nursing a diet coke and having some salt. At one point, I was the only person riding ha ha. I will say, the night was lovely and all the lights were so pretty as I rode around on the People Mover. Now certain things trigger my motion sickness, like Star Tours, swing sets. But I had never ever had anything like this before. I believe that because I sat for 4 hours straight before going on that wild ride that is Mine Train (ha), all of that remaining stationary without enough movement from walking is what caused it to be so bad. I was fine by the next day, which was good because we were going on our first cruise! Which for the record, yes, I did get motion sick on that cruise, as did my husband, as we hit some tropical storm waves so much that we were rocking and rolling and almost falling over when we stood and when we were in bed!

That concludes my birthday dining report. I had so much fabulous food at Disney World, which hands down beat all of the cruise ships food, even at their Chef’s table. Despite getting the infamous Disney Rash and getting motion sick for hours which left me banished to the People Mover, I had a fantastic time! Thank you for joining along to read and peruse my pics.

Usually lurk but do comment on a few of my ' dis-friend's' reports. :)

I love to read about V&A but sounds like this wasn't their best effort. Now here's where I have a serious question....why, after you mentioned the
beautiful necklace crafted by and borrowed from your MIL, did you NOT show us a picture of it? I'm dying to see it :rotfl2:sounds like the kind of stuff I love.
(can you tell I don't get out much:rotfl:)

I wonder too, if possibly one of the non-alcoholic drinks you had triggered some kind of reaction?? Sometimes certain fruit drinks with pectin do that to me....migraines, dizziness...
pomegranate, raspberry and cranberry are the worst for me. Maybe since they were some you weren't used to, they caused some issues?

Anyway I loved your report and I'll wait until your DD graduates, to read another V&A report from you....by then I'll be so old I won't know what you're eating or where and will probably forget how to use a computer(I'm already old so I'm sure your daughter will take that into consideration and graduate in a couple of years?).

Thanks, I really enjoyed this foodie report!

The last update also made me feel a bit better about needing to cancel my V&A's res this year. It's been on the wishlist for a long time, but I just couldn't make the budget stretch enough to fit it in this time around. But you're not the first person I've seen commenting that the service has worsened incrementally recently, so perhaps it's best for me to wait and revisit V&A's in the future.

I love your comment! It made me laugh. And it made me feel that my trip report isn't talking to myself :) Very interesting idea about the pectin. I had all of those fruits in those drinks, and you are correct, I don't typically have juice. I don't have a good photograph of the necklace. I am not sure of the stone/crystal she used, but it captures the light and sparkles and looks grey, blue, greenish. it is so pretty. This picture does not do it justice and was taken in a dark room.

I definitely think you should keep it on your wish list and just hit it up when your budget allows. It definitely puts a dent in the budget that is for sure!!! I almost felt badly commenting on the service, because it wasn't "bad," but I can just say I enjoyed our servers and our meal better in January. I felt like the servers were more attentive the first time I was there and had a different vibe. They were also probably 30+ years younger....

Thanks for the details and all the awesome pics!

Harambe nights, tequila lunch, V&A, DAH then off to a cruise? WOW. Where do I get my husband onboard with a similar plan for my 40th?!

Great report and Victoria and Alberts looks absolutely amazing. Sorry you had such a hard time at MK afterwards but an evening cruising around on the People Mover does not sounds all bad to me. :D Thanks for sharing!

Circle of Flavors Harambe Nights

Hands down, this was AWESOME and is one of my most favorite things I have ever done at Disney. We had such an amazing time, when I saw it opened up for our Christmas trip, I went ahead and booked it for the entire family, price tag be damned. Even my husband loved it, and he is hard to please. I honestly expect Disney to cut back on this event, but there was SO MUCH food and options, that made the price a great deal in my opinion. I didn't even try everything because there simply was not enough room, even with taking just a bite or two of each dish. We ended up befriending a woman and her mother and frequently sat together at the different stations, even exchanging FB information.

I am just going to touch on some of the highlights and let the photos mostly speak for themselves. I will say that there were so many photos that I did not take, because I was in the element and enjoying myself. More drink and food carts, icies, virtual reality, character meets, etc. When the event ended, we were on such a happy high.

I could have drank these POG mimosas alllll night long. I had several and then they ran out and they were not at any of the next stops. They even let us take our drinks on the train to the next stop.

There was live music that made it so much fun. At the first station, the musician saw my birthday pin and serenaded me. Being an introvert who pushes herself to be extroverted, I felt awkward, but having some alcohol made it feel less awkward as the night wore on and as he continued to bring me up. LOL

Lots of unique dishes and plenty of different kinds of alcohol. I don’t like beer, but I had an African Beer Shandy that I thought was nice and refreshing.

I have videos of the live music, but I am not sure if I can get them posted here. This part was my favorite part. The music was so fun and as it turned dark, the lights came on and amongst the food and drinks the ambiance was so fun.

I am a weird kind of introvert, who will totally chat up strangers. I chatted up a woman in the dessert line who rave about these mango Popsicles, so of course I had to get one too!
Thanks for such a great review of Circles of Flavor! We are signed up for that in May and I had began to rethink my devision, but this got me enthusiastic about it again!

We are taking the kids in March, since they have not done it. We had hoped to do it in December, but one of my kids started running a fever so Disney was cool and let us swap it day if the event. I hope y'all have fun!

Next up, Galaxy’s Edge! We got up at the crack of down to make the Extra Early Magic Hours. We went to the bus stop at Poly and waited. And waited. And when we saw another family give up, who had been there before us, we decided to order an Uber (or it may have been a Lyft, my husband did it). I think it is kind of annoying that you pay extra to be a Deluxe Resort and they cannot get the bus there.

While in Galaxy's Edge, we got a Rontu Roasters Wrap. I would get this again. The sausage had a nice snap to it and had a bit of a spicy kick to it. I don’t think my younger kids would enjoy it due to the spice. The pita bread was soft and fresh. The extra meat did not add anything for me, but extra protein is always good. The sauce, despite having peppercorn in its name, was not very peppery. It could have used more sauce than what was provided. The slaw was not overwhelming. This was 12.99, probably because all the meat. It did not come with a side, which I think is stingy. I would pad another dollar or so for a side to make it feel like a meal.

My husband picked out a drink for us to share, which meant he drank it faster than me and had most of it. Sometimes, I hate sharing with my husband because he eats/drinks faster than me and takes bigger bites. He doesn't pay attention to how much I have had. So I went for one last sip after my last bite, and it was all gone. Harumph. I cannot find my receipts right now, so I am assuming this was the Tatooine Sunset, which is Gold Peak Unsweetened Tea, Odwalla Lemonade with Melon and Blueberry. If it was this, I don’t recall it tasting very much like lemonade or even tea, but more like a light gatorade. It was 5.49. It was fine, but overpriced like most Disney drinks. It got the job done, but I would not seek it out.

Not a food, but my husband built a droid. When we brought it home, our 2 year old was scared to death of it and would jump up on the furniture to avoid it. Ha ha.

We wrapped up things in the land before our scheduled reservation for Oga’s, so we walked up and asked if they could take us well over an hour early. No problem! The atmosphere is fun to look at, but internally, I felt rushed, having to stand the entire time at the bar, knowing we had a timeframe. Now, no one told us we had a timeframe, I just knew from everything I read on the internet, plus people come and kind of crowd your space.

Fuzzy Tauntaun-16.00
Cîroc Peach Vodka, Bols Peach Schnapps, Simply® Orange with Tangerine, Pure Cane Sugar, and "Buzz Button Tingling" Foam

The foam was interesting and not long lasting. I did ask for a straw so I did not ingest it all at once.

Yub Nub-15.00
Malibu Pineapple Rum, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, Citrus Juices, and Passion Fruit

This was very sour, which was unexpected. We did not enjoy it, but drank it anyway. I liked the seeds in it, they were sour too. My drink was too sour. I think it was grapefruit.

Blue Bantha-13.00
Blue Milk served chilled with Bantha-inspired Vanilla-Butter Sugar Cookie (contains tree nuts: coconut)

This is what my husband wanted, as he was not in the mood to drink at 9 AM. The blue milk had a taste to it that I could not put my finger on… something from my childhood. I loved the cookie! But they don’t give you napkins and the cookie is large and crumbles when you try to break it.

Verdict: I know this is going to be appalling to some, but this was a once and done for us. It was SO overpriced that it was ridiculous to pay that much for 3 drinks and have to stand feeling rushed. We did not enjoy the flavor of our drinks enough to want to pay those prices. I would rather return to Trader Sams. I had made reservations for our Christmas trip, but will be canceling it. We both agreed that it would not be enjoyable with our little ones (making them stand the whole time and trying to wrangle a 2 year old in those surroundings is completely unappealing). Glad we tried it though!
I hate to see this being called "Milk" as it is not real dairy milk but a nut juice. I've heard so many people complain that it tastes off when they are thinking that it's cow milk just colored blue. Really giving milk a bad rap. Enjoying your dinning report!

That was the exact description on the Disney menu. I agree their wording might be confusing, but I knew going in, from reviews, it was not cow milk.
