When running low on points- do you rent or borrow? We are working on saving $ to buy more points outright, but until then.....

We just got back from a 14 day trip to DVB/AKV which maxed out our points from our Dec 2018 UY (had to borrow). We would like to rent a 2 bedroom for 2019 spring break in DHHI and can either borrow points which would wipe out our 2019 UY or rent through a broker/DVC member.

Ideally, we would like to take a year off from using points to catch up, but our Disney addiction has other ideas.

DHHI is great for us- In late March we will need heated pools and a kid friendly resort- we are open to other rentals on the Island, but not sure where to begin!

So far we have been in borrow mode, but planning for a big trip in a couple of years. So we either rent points, or pay cash to stay for any trips outside our point allotment. We have decided we will not add more points yet, investigating property in FL for purchase. We gave ourselves a deadline of the end of 2019 to decide which way we want to go. We are less than a 4 hour drive from HH, so that is part of the consideration for us. I wish we could figure out what we want to do for the rest of our lives, lol.

We have always been in borrow mode. Every trip we plan is done by borrow the next years points. Sometimes if we need a few extra points we will buy a couple one time use points. It works fine for us.

What is the rule when you can pay for a night and they charge $15 per/point? How many times can you do this for how many nights?

We have always borrowed. Added on when we were out of points to borrow, we have only 1/3 of our 2019 UY points left to borrow, but I do not anticipate making any more reservations within our March 2018 UY. We have Flower and Garden 2019 covered.

Used to be you could "rent" one time use points from DVC for $15 per pt up to 24 points each UY. Think they raised the cost to $17 per pt now.

Edited to add: these OTU pts are also only available at the 7 month window, so it's not always a useful option.

We've also been in borrow mode! But thinking we may need to add to our points in the future.

We borrow when we have to, but recently we've had extra point at either BLT or BWV, and rented out btwn 60-100pts/yr.

Check out TUG and see if anyone has a HHI resort to rent out.

I would borrow but I would downgrade to a 1BR instead of a 2BR. There is a couch and a fold-out chair so your kids don't need to share a bed.
