But there are now multiple tiers, so it appears you are basically bridged up to the price of the ticket at the time you bought the ticket.

Yes - that's confirmed in the Ticket sticky on the Theme Parks board as well. In that sticky thread is a post that contains links to ticket prices for several past periods of time, so if you have an old ticket you can estimate how much the upgrade cost might be.
