Use your head, don't lose your head!: A Sep 2019 pre-trip report + local fun. UPDATED 9/12. Mini NY Report COMPLETE

Local Update #1

It’s Fringe! On Thursday the 16th my friend and I attended our very first Orlando Fringe show. Even though I’ve lived here for several years this is my first time attending Fringe. I always seem to forget about it until it’s over. This year I planned ahead by reading up on all the shows (there are over 200!) and picking my top choices.

The festival goes until May 27th. If you’re interested in going to Fringe, you’ll want to download the app. You can buy your tickets from there. They’re pretty reasonable; I think they cap out at about $12. You’ll also need a snazzy button which is a one time purchase of $10 (cash only), which you can buy at any of the venues. It’s about 30 minutes from Disney property (without traffic) and parking is SUPER limited so unless you’re taking a cab or Uber I definitely recommend getting there early. Almost all the venues are in an area called Loch Haven Park.

We saw a show called Le Cirque Nuit, which is (very loosely) based on a novel called The Night Circus, which I read ages ago but can’t remember well. The circus acts were awesome. The framing story was a little thin but that's not really what we came for anyway.

The theater lobby had an art gallery, including this piece with characters from The Animatronicans.

After the show we went to one of my favorite bars, Lil Indies, which is on Mills Ave near downtown Orlando. It's got such a cool vibe (think abandoned house that happens to have a bar in it) and I'd heard the bartenders make excellent mocktails. I was not disappointed.

Saturday morning I ran a 5k in Maitland, a town just a couple miles from me. It was to benefit the Maitland Library. The weather was perfect and the route was gorgeous. Not my best time, of course, given my lack of training and growing an extra person in my belly, but I'm glad I went. I'd been thinking of blowing it off.

Chapel on the lake. Wouldn't this be an amazing place to get married? On the loop back there were people doing yoga on the stage.

After the run there were some goodies, including donuts. I snagged a picture before I swallowed the whole thing.

I was't expecting a medal for a 5k, but it's so cute!

Sorry, boys, I'm taken!

On Saturday my husband and I saw two Fringe shows: Infestation (a parody of a 50’s B horror movie) and Florida Man (a play where the audience chooses the “Florida Man” headline and the actors acted out how he would have gotten to that point).

z2OIuH4.jpg

The stage before Infestation. A guy sitting behind us was saying that he'll just come to Fringe without tickets and then buy whatever shows are available. I thought that was a neat idea!

Hubby and I enjoying our time in between shows. We loved that it was easy to get tickets to shows even last minute, and that none of them are very long.

sAOrehv.jpg

Florida Man!

Then I saw two more on Sunday: Romeo and Juliet Plastered (seems pretty self-explanatory) and Shadow Tales for a Darkened Theater. That was the only one that I explicitly didn’t like. It was a series of Twilight Zone-style vignettes and some of them were a little problematic in terms of messaging. No pictures from that night, sadly.

And then more Fringe on Monday! I saw the show I'd been most looking forward to, the Animatronicans: Under New Management.

AO0a55F.jpg

As I've mentioned before, this is DEFINITELY not family-friendly. The first installment had some showings after Fringe so if you do have a chance to see it and you like Disney insider humor and don't mind crass humor, it's absolutely worth checking out!

I don't have any plans to do any more Fringe stuff until at least tomorrow or later, but last night I got a push notification from the Fringe app that there would be an announcement about a surprise show. A few minutes later, I got this notification:
GRPBzJy.jpg

I showed it to my husband a little before midnight, figuring he'd get a chuckle out of it. Then I went to bed. A few minutes later, he burst into the bedroom and frantically threw on his clothes, yelling, "I can't believe you didn't tell me about this sooner!" Apparently he actually wanted to see it! :confused3 He left, and not long after, I got this in a text from him:

4tZqzPi.jpg

So needless to say, so far our first Fringe experience has been pretty unique and amazing! I would definitely urge anyone visiting central FL during the festival time to check out at least one Fringe show if they can!

Following along!

I went to the Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland last year, really cool experience. How fun to live so close and go to so many performances!

I've never been to a Fringe fest before and it's super cool. The performances aren't professional, but it's great to be able to see a wide variety of acts in such a short amount of time.

Life Update #2
Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day weekend! My husband and I had a little barbecue, and other than that it was very chill.

We had our first ultrasound last week, where we found out I’m a little less far along than was first thought. Only 5 ½ weeks, whereas before I thought I was 7 weeks. So far all there is to see is a little circle, so we have a long road ahead of us! I’m tired a lot, so right now it’s crazy to think that in a few months I’ll be waddling around Disney, but at least we’re staying on property so we can take plenty of breaks.

I also want to mention that I’m going to be part of The Main Street Chronicles, an upcoming scripted podcast about Disney lore. I won’t mention who I’ll be playing, as I know the creators want to keep the subject of season one under wraps for now and my character would give it away. But if you could head over to Facebook and give us a like, that would be awesome!

I went to a couple more Fringe shows before the festival ended on Memorial Day. The first was called 2 For Tea.

akw2ZgG.jpg

YrviMui.jpg

It was billed as something Monty Python fans would enjoy, which meant I had to check it out. I can’t even describe it accurately. Like a lot of Fringe shows, it’s not a straight narrative, but more a conceptual piece. Except, it was very funny. The (loose) story is that two British friends are having tea together, and then strange stuff happens, like they get involved with the “general” (an audience volunteer) to supply tea to the troops, or one of the actor’s Mom and Dad (also audience volunteers) come to visit. I think this one is actually a traveling show, so you might have the chance to see it in your own town!

The last Fringe performance I attended was called Art Tour. Rather than being in a theater, this was a tour of the art on display for the Fringe festival in a couple of the different host venues. I dragged my poor brother-in-law to this one, though he ended up liking it more than me.

It was promoted as a kind of improv/comedy performance, so I was expecting the guide to be engaging us with interesting and funny facts about the art. Instead, it reminded me more of being on an Elementary school trip to an art museum. She wanted us to get involved and asked us questions about how the art made us feel, which after a long work day I wasn’t as much in the mood to do.

Overall, Fringe was a really cool experience. Even though not every show I saw blew me away, it was such a great thing to be a part of and I’m glad I finally took the plunge after three years of living in Orlando. I will definitely be back next year, and recommend anyone who is able to check it out!

Trip Update: Food and Wine Reservations (and looking ahead to February)

I FINALLY booked our Food and Wine events. Like last year, I booked us for three events, and the same three type of events.

Culinary Demonstration (Pastry): September 20th. This is the only culinary demonstration going on during our trip. I love pastries so I’m looking forward to it. Not sure if it will be a sweet or savory pastry, but hopefully whatever it is, it’ll be warm and flaky.

Parisian Breakfast: September 21st. This is our pick for a special dining event. It was basically the only one I saw that fit with our schedule and didn’t explicitly include alcohol in the price and the theme of the event (i.e. no wine pairing or anything). What I didn’t want was to book an event where alcohol was not only included, but an integral part of the experience, since you pay for the alcohol either way, and I didn’t want to feel like I’d be missing out on part of the experience since I won’t be drinking. It wasn’t my first choice for a special dining event, but last year we went with the Tequila Lunch at La Hacienda which also wasn’t either of our first choices, and it ended up being our favorite meal of the trip. So I’m hoping we’ll fall in love with this meal as well!

Mix It, Make It, Celebrate It: September 23rd. This one is a chocolate painting class. I thought this sounded so fun. My dad loves chocolate so I think it’s a great fit for us.

I also ended up booking myself for the Princess 5k in February. Usually I’m online as soon as passholder booking opens for Princess weekend, but this year I guess I just didn’t see the announcement. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to run this year, since I’ve run at least one of the races every year since 2015 and I’m a little worn out, but the princess for the 5k is Moana and she’s my favorite. I’m kind of over the half marathon because it’s always so crowded (some parts of the course are so narrow and crowded that you have no choice but to walk them), and the 10k is cool but again, I’ve run it a lot. Every year except one since 2015. Plus, just doing the 5k means I don’t have to train as much, and if I have to drop out for some reason I won’t have lost as much money.

I am considering signing up for the Star Wars half for next April. I’m not a huge Star Wars person but the course looks really cool and it would give me more time to train post-baby. Plus, I remember hearing that that one doesn’t sell out as quickly so there won’t be the pressure of the registration mad dash like there is for Princess weekend.

Life and Local Update #3

Who wants ultrasound pictures!

A9lc8Yo.jpg

It’s looking a little more like an actual creature now, and we have a heartbeat! I’ve been seeing a specialist but now I actually graduate to a regular OB. We’re very excited! I still can’t quite believe this is real.

After our ultrasound on June 4th, we went for lunch at one of my favorite spots: Infusion Tea. This is in our neighborhood of College Park. They have dozens of loose leaf tea options and a great vegetarian menu. I’m not vegetarian myself but sometimes it’s just what I’m craving. I love this place a lot and wanted to share it with you, in case you ever find yourself close enough to visit!

4IWHGfG.jpg

I got the corn chowder and roasted pear salad. The corn chowder really hit the spot, and my random craving for soup. And the pear salad is something I almost always get. It’s incredible.

On Wednesday I had the chance to meet up with a friend from high school, who was staying at the Dolphin for a conference. She and I figured we hadn’t seen each other since graduation, but we’ve known each other since we were little kids. She ate dinner with colleagues earlier, so since neither of us were drinking (her by choice, me by necessity), I suggested dessert instead, which gave me an excuse to introduce her to one of my favorite spots at Disney Springs: Amorette’s.

T5tAe3l.jpg

I had the Crème Brulee, which I usually love, but the topping was a little burnt. It wasn’t terrible, but took away from the experience somewhat.

I also got the key lime bar to go for hubby, who you will recall does not like Disney, but DOES like Amorette’s :sad2: My friend had the cheesecake, which she said she liked!

I don’t know what the weather is like in y’all’s neck of the woods, but right now we’re finally starting afternoon showers. Our lawn was looking pretty sad, and I’m hoping this cools us down a bit, as the heat had been getting oppressive.

Local Update #4

On Saturday my husband and I went to a CFC Arts concert. CFC Arts is a nonprofit organization that gives performances and classes to the central Florida community. My friend is a clarinetist for their symphonic orchestra, which I believe is the largest orchestra in Florida with over 160 members. The theme of this concert was “Symphonic Broadway.” As the title implies, they played a bunch of songs from different Broadway shows, and they also had dancers and singers to accompany some of the numbers.

gUUmw3x.jpg

It was a really fun time, and for only $15 a seat, a nice cheap way to spend an evening. They had a variety of shows on the program, but of course they had to end with a rousing performance of Circle of Life from The Lion King, which I admit made me choke up a bit.

tK4h4sJ.jpg

Check out their website. If you happen to be in town when they have a performance going on, I would definitely recommend venturing over to see it!

On Sunday we went to one of our favorite local restaurants, Sapporo Ramen. We usually eat from here about once a week, but almost always do take out. Since we actually dined in this time, I wanted to show it off.

aWaDuO7.jpg

We got the vegetable croquettes (korokke) for our appetizer. We usually get the dumplings (gyoza) which I think my husband would have preferred, but I have been really loving these lately. Super crunchy and the sauce is amazing.

p8v1oxF.jpg

My husband got his usual, spicy miso ramen with an egg added. At other ramen places I’ve been to, this is typically served with ground pork instead of sliced chasu pork, which I prefer. If it were served that way here, I would probably order it more.
YmkX3Ug.jpg

I got kitsune udon, which is udon noodles in broth with vegetables, topped with sweet fried tofu. This was my first time ordering this, but I’d tried it when a friend ordered it on a previous trip. It was amazing. I usually get the chicken katsu curry, but I wanted something a little milder this time.
gWMqCHL.jpg

Japanese food is probably my favorite cuisine. This place is really charming and everything is delicious. And they have successfully implemented one of my favorite counter service rules: Order first, then get a table. I wish more Disney restaurants implemented this rule properly (cough Cooke's of Dublin cough). It’s a little far from Disney, but I’ve definitely seen tourists with Mickey ears and magic bands here, so if ramen or Japanese food is something you enjoy, you might want to find a way to get there! It’s a great local spot, and it’s in a strip mall with lots of other Asian places, including a bakery, bubble tea spot, and an Asian supermarket. So instead of buying those Japanese snacks you love at the overpriced Epcot store, you can just buy them here! You’re welcome!

Love Sapporo Ramen; Orlando area has pretty excellent restaurants outside Disney (much better in quality and taste I might add)

Absolutely. I rarely go to Disney just for a meal (with the exception of festivals and restaurants like Morimoto Asia). When we lived in Fort Myers we pretty much had to pick from chain restaurants, but one thing I love about Orlando is the diversity of food options.

Followed you here from my TR, congratulations on your pregnancy! Your trip with your dad sounds like so much fun and I can't wait to hear all about it. Love your PTR, you find so many fun things to do!

Local Update #5: More ramen, and an ill-advised 10k

Sorry for the delay in posting! I've got a few posts written, but am a little behind on getting them up. Also, I finally figured out how to resize images here! Is that new?

A few Friday nights ago my friend E and I decided to finally try out Domu, a pretty well-known ramen place around here that is notoriously popular. I felt a little guilty not bringing my husband (who works nights), but we were craving ramen. The one time he and I tried to go here, it was a Saturday night, we were starving, and the wait was two hours (you can’t call ahead or make a reservation). So we decided not to go. But tonight, E and I were not as hungry, but we knew that when we did become hungry, we’d want ramen. So off to the Audubon Park neighborhood we went!

This is about 10 minutes from my house. Domu is in a delightful building called East End Market, on Corinne Drive. Since it was a Friday night, parking was predictably slim pickings. I dropped off E in front of East End Market and went to park. I ended up finding a spot a couple blocks down the road. While I walked back, E let me know the wait would be about two hours. Same as last time, but this time, I was prepared to wait.

They gave E a pager and we were optimistic that our wait time would be shorter than expected, so we decided to stick around East End Market. I’d actually never been inside this building before, but E has and she knew a bar just inside the entrance that served fresh cocktails and mocktails. It was super busy, but we ordered and then found tables outside.

OKqj7Xf.jpg

I have no recollection of what my drink was called, but it was fruity and delicious. We enjoyed the nice weather, chatted, and people watched. There were a group of people sitting near us that commented that the outdoor space wasn’t “cool” enough for them, lol, but we found it plenty cool.

At one point I walked into the market to go to the bathroom, and snagged this terrible, terrible picture for y’all.

Bz3Chn9.jpg

Not sure what it is? I don't blame you. I thought it was a better pic until it was too late. But anyway, this is...Gideons! Yes, I buried the lead. East End Market is home to the original and famous Gideon’s Bakehouse! I didn’t get a cookie tonight since I was saving my appetite for dinner, but they were plenty busy. I knew they were located here but since I’d never been inside the building I didn’t know what their space looked like. It’s really neat! Like an antique curio shop.

After about two hours, our table was finally ready. By now it was after 9 pm, but surprisingly and thankfully, we weren’t starving. But we were at least hungry enough to enjoy the ramen.

fBgsIvL.jpg

I got the Richie Rich ramen, which is a tonkatsu-based broth with pork belly, garlic, mushrooms, and lots of other amazing ingredients. It was heaven in a bowl and I have to admit, better than the ramen I’ve had at Sapporo. Honestly, it’s pretty much the same price, but at least at Sapporo the wait is usually way less than two hours.

rqyw2h0.jpg

E went for the spicy vegan ramen. She said it was great. We also considered dessert. They have a rotating selection of soft serve, with some really unusual flavors. That night’s selection was German chocolate with activated charcoal. The table next to ours ordered it and their teeth were black! I heard them saying it was really good though. Regardless, we were full.

The next morning I drove about 30 minutes to Deltona to run the Best Friends 10k. This was one I had signed up for months ago, before I was pregnant and when I was riding the high of Princess weekend and had it in my head that I’d run a race every month. I’d been seriously considering blowing this one off because I hadn’t trained at all (in fact the last time I ran was that 5k in Maitland I did in May), it was sooooo hot, and of course I’m 10 weeks pregnant. It also started at 8:30, which is pretty late for a summer 10k in Florida (the lady running the event mentioned that the race organizers actually lived in Pennsylvania, so they had no idea how bad it would be). But I did it, powered through. It was in a nice looking park but I can’t say it was super fun. Here are some pics:

IhJXyvV.jpg

5LnfQI9.jpg

It was designed as a relay so the course was short, only a mile out and back, so I had to run it 6 times, and as mentioned it was very, very hot. I’m pretty sure I actually finished last (though my time was about 14:30 per mile. Not bad considering no training, oppressive heat, and being preggers!). But I did finish, and got a medal at least!

Trip Update: Room selection and some dining thoughts

For those of you who aren’t members of Touringplans.com, you should definitely consider joining. It’s only about $15 a year, and there are a ton of benefits. One of them is the ability to see a vast database of photographs of room views at all the Disney hotels, and the website will actually fax a request for a specific room on your behalf. I’ve taken advantage of this feature for most of our recent trips. You can filter the map by room type to make sure you’re only looking at rooms that are in the category you booked, which is extra important for DVC stays since there are usually no magical upgrades. :charac2:

The last time I stayed at the Boardwalk, I believe we were also in a water/garden view, and we had a room right off the lobby overlooking the pool. It was actually really nice, and I thought about requesting that one again, or at least one of the rooms right above it (we almost always prefer to stay on a higher floor if we can help it). But on the map I noticed that there were a few rooms overlooking the boardwalk that technically fall into the water/garden view category, I guess because they’re more off to the side. So I requested this one, on the top floor.

5053.JPG

Room 5053. I think it would be really cool to have that view! I hope we get the room. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

On a side note, it also occurs to me that I’ll probably end up cancelling our first night dinner at the Wave, for two reasons. First, because when I made it, we had planned to stay at the Polynesian but have since changed to the Boardwalk, so the location is no longer convenient. Second, it completely slipped my mind that we’re going in September, which is Magical Dining Month!

For those of you who’ve never heard of it, Magical Dining Month is an event held in Orlando and the surrounding areas from late August to the end of September. There are usually a few hundred restaurants participating, including a few at Disney area resorts and Disney Springs. All these restaurants have special prix fixe menus for the event, and for $35, you get a three course meal (usually a choice of 2-3 options for each course, which tend to consist of options both on and off the regular menu). It’s a great way to try different restaurants for a modest price, and I always try to hit a few different places. I think last year I got 4 or 5, including Morimoto Asia. The menu also usually changes at each place from year to year, so if you went to a place one year and want to try it again, you’ll probably get different options this time (and you can still order off the regular menu if that’s your jam). Because these menus are so popular, you should book a table if you know you want to try a place.

So far, only a couple of menus have been released for this year’s event, but probably next month sometime I’ll review all of them and decide which ones we want to try out while we’re at Disney. I’m guessing one of them will be our first night dinner instead of The Wave.

Local Update: Enzian and the Eden Bar, a July 4th race, and traveling to I-Drive for Ethiopian (and bonus ultrasound!)

Recently my friend E and I went to one of my favorite spots near our house: The Enzian. The Enzian is an independent dine-in theater in Maitland, about 10 minutes from where we live. It’s been around for a few decades. In fact, E’s parents were members for many years. My husband and I only went for the first time last year when we saw the Mr. Rogers documentary. But since then, I’ve returned a few times, and we’ve gone to the Eden Bar, an outdoor bar and restaurant area right outside the theater.

ZWz03MO.jpg

Entrance to the theater

vedRnvw.jpg

Eden Bar before the evening rush.

Enzian plays independent films and cult classics, and they also host some theater festivals and events throughout the year. Tickets for showings are pretty reasonable, about $13 each, and seating types are varied. You have tables and chairs, booths, couches with coffee tables, and a few normal movie theater-type seats as well. I prefer the couches and coffee tables, located pretty close to the screen, and usually sit there.

onJRm6P.jpg

I actually ended up taking this after the show since the lights were dimmed when we arrived. You can see the tables on the second tier and there are more on a third tier that was behind me. The bottom tier holds the couches and movie theater-style seating. That's where we sit!

E and I went to see All is True, a Kenneth Branagh film about the final days of William Shakespeare. We enjoyed it for sure, though I liked the last movie we saw here, The Favourite, more. For food, I ordered an iced green tea and chicken fingers and fries. Pretty standard fare, but hit the spot! I tried to get a picture but it was too dark. Apparently, the food at the Enzian used to be much better, like gourmet level, but then they lost their chef and have moved more towards pre-made items. It’s a shame, but it probably helps them get the food out faster in an environment where the meals can’t really linger. I do wish it was better quality, but overall I love the experience of seeing a move here.

After the movie, it was pouring, so we decided to wait out the rain in the attached covered bar area, Eden Bar. They serve the same food menu as inside the theater, and they also have a full bar. Of course, I wasn’t imbibing liquor, but I did get a tasty non-alcoholic mojito!

9ai7Uan.jpg

Mocktails are basically glasses of sugar though...

a7FLlSE.jpg

Our view from the bar. Got a little busier while we were inside.

I’ll have to come back here when it’s not raining to get you guys some great pictures of this area. The Enzian campus, as it were, is super gorgeous inside and out.

Fast forwarding now to July 4th. I didn’t do anything too exciting that day. My husband had to work as usual, so in the afternoon and evening I went to Lakeland (about an hour away in Polk county) to hang with some friends. But in the morning I ran a 5k in Winter Park!

Yeah, I don’t know why either.

This is another one I signed up for earlier in the year when I was determined to tackle at least one race per month. This was the last one I had signed up for though, at least for the remainder of the summer.

The race took place in downtown Winter Park, which is gorgeous. I know that’s been mentioned on the Dis Unplugged podcast a few times, but I’m telling you as well, if you ever have the chance to check out Winter Park, go. Awesome restaurants, beautiful parks, great shopping. It’s right down the street from where I live, so instead of dealing with parking I decided to order an Uber and was there in 10 minutes.

fdoJmxI.jpg

My race admission included this cute new tank top!

BrawEFg.jpg

The street where racers made their way towards the starting line.

tUAbpMW.jpg

We got round bibs!

I arrived with just enough time to get to the starting line (I’ve long learned that except for Disney races, there’s no need to get there very early. Just arrive 15 minutes or so before the start time, get into position, run, and go home!). The route took us down Park Avenue, and then down some side streets with gorgeous houses that I will never, ever own. I didn’t make my best time, about 15.25 minutes/mile. But it was so hot and the race wasn’t chip timed anyway so I didn’t care. I just wanted to get it done so I could go home and go back to sleep. Which I did! So mission accomplished.

A few days after, we had another ultrasound! It looks like baby is doing very well. I'm almost 15 weeks now, and these were taken at just over 12 weeks.

a2ihgk7.jpg

No certainty yet on the sex.

A couple days later, I went with some friends to an amazing restaurant, Nile Ethiopian.

HV1fa5n.jpg

I’d never had Ethiopian food before my friends took me here. It’s one of my friend G’s favorite restaurants, so much so that she’s willing to travel to International Drive to eat there!

Yes, the dreaded I-Drive. You’ll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy…okay, it’s not all that terrible. My husband and I have ventured here a few times because the drive has the only Imax screen in Central Florida (or maybe just Orlando? Either way it’s the closest to us). And the restaurant itself is usually not overrun with tourists, since I doubt very many are adventurous enough to eat here.

But it’s AMAZING. I would say if you like Boma, Sanaa, Tusker House, etc, you would like this food. I was lucky enough to introduce this place to a friend of mine who visits Disney all the way from Canada. I don’t know how much it is to Uber from property, but it takes us about 20 minutes to get there from College Park. Not too bad.

reqSu28.jpg

If possible, we like to sit in the private “huts” on the left side of the restaurant, rather than the traditional tables. It’s a really awesome experience if you have the right number of people (4-5), but it pretty much requires that everyone order the same thing. There were five of us, so we ordered two of the chef’s special, which has a variety of meats and veggies, plus a veggie dish that is not on the chef’s special list. We ate the food so quickly I forgot to get a picture, but I do have pictures from another trip there.

FIpyqzB.jpg

The food is brought out with this covering.

Our chef's special.

There are no utensils in this restaurant; you eat everything with a special Ethiopian bread. So needless to say, to eat here you should be comfortable with sharing! Though I guess you could also order your own dish, but where’s the fun in that?

After our main course we usually get Ethiopian coffee, which comes out as a little ceremony. The waitress brings it on a tray with incense, and pours it for us. We’re usually offered sugar, but no milk.

OV4dhHG.jpg

uvBvBbn.jpg

I can’t say enough about how delicious this place is. I mean, the fact that I’m willing to trek over to I-Drive should tell you everything you need to know!

Whew that covered a lot in one post. Basically the whole month of July. I have a few trip updates, which I'll post about soon!
