"When I went it was all lights, and music, and Mickey doin' his magic." — Aug. '18 Disneyversary TR — Completed (Finally!!) August 20, 2021

MNSSHP Continued...
Aug. 24—Part 4

Since we were in the area and the line wasn't long, now seemed like as good a time as any to check in with our pal, Mickey. He was dressed for the occasion and looking not-so-scary.

Next, I knew I was running out of time for the character photo op I'd had my heart set on. We headed over to the teacups to get in line for the Queen of Hearts/Tweedles, and Alice/Mad Hatter. Since we were dressed as the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter, I just couldn't pass up these character meets!

We were in line, but just before we reached the front all the characters had to leave for the upcoming second parade. Anyone else who was waiting at the time decided to bail, but I said "no way!" We were way too cute in our costumes not to meet the Alice gang. We decided to sit and wait until after the parade when they returned, being promised by a character attendant that we'd be first to meet them in their next set.

While we waited, we chatted with the character attendant, learning that her name was Heather, and that she was a big Star Wars fan. Galaxy's Edge was still in development at this time, so she and N geeked out together about what they were most excited to experience when it opened. We all talked about our favourite things to do at Disney, and Heather mentioned to us more than once that she appreciated that we didn't get upset about the character wait, that we were her favourite kind of guests, and talking with other young-adult-mega-Disney-fan types made working at WDW the most magical for her, etc. She really did make our night extra fun and helped keep the wait from feeling too long, so a huge shoutout to Heather the character attendant from summer 2018! Thanks for the memories!

The Mad Tea Party ride was lit up for the party—I think it's a stretch to call this a party "overlay," but it was pretty nonetheless!

The only unfortunate moment of the night also happened to occur during our wait for these characters. As I've mentioned before in my TRs, I'm highly emetophobic, i.e. I super phobic of vomit. It sounds silly, but the anxiety I experience around seeing/hearing others puke is no laughing matter. I even turn the tv channel or ask N to screen movies for me if there are vomit scenes. My niece got a stomach bug a week ago, and I have still yet to emerge from my basement bedroom to the rest of the house. Fortunately, other than the occasional witnessing of an upchucking incident on a Disney bus, or at Food and Wine, I don't normally have too much trouble at Disney World. I don't ride rides that are especially intense for motion sickness anyway, and most Disney rides aren't super vomit-inducing...except for the aptly nicknamed, "puke cups"...which happened to be right beside us. While we were sitting waiting, I heard someone come running off the tea cups and spew into the bushes behind us. (N had also heard it, but he didn't mention it at the time in case I missed it. Not so!) I went into an immediate internal panic, heart racing, breath shallow, palms sweating, stomach in my throat. My first inclination in these situations is to get as far away as possible. I would NOT, however, be missing our character meet now, after we'd waited so long. I swallowed hard, took a few deep breaths, and engaged my brain as fully as possible in the conversation with N and Heather. Before too long, I was feeling much saner, and the characters arrived!

We had THE MOST AMAZING interactions with the Queen of Hearts and the Tweedles! We were there to play, and so were they! The Queen, especially, was incredibly in character. She made N kiss her hand, she posed for photos, and when I tried to take a selfie with her she made herself the star of the show. The Tweedles were also lots of fun, stealing N's hat, and dancing around dopily.

My only complaint about the whole shebang was that I had stupidly set my camera off to the side on the ground to participate more fully in the interaction, but the characters ended up being all over the place, and one of the Tweedles accidentally kicked my camera. It didn't seem any worse for wear aside from a bit of a scuff on the exterior. The Tweedle seemed horrified and incredibly apologetic, and I told him not to worry about it. I never should have left it on the ground in the first place, and I was very happy that it seemed to still be functioning properly.

Next, we got in line to see Alice and the Mad Hatter! There were only a few people ahead of us, so we didn't wait long. I reminded Alice that we'd met them earlier that morning at 1900PF, but that she probably wouldn't recognize us because now we were disguised as her friends!

After our character meets, the night was almost over.

I still hadn't managed to watch the Hocus Pocus Villain Spectacular, however, so we decided to stick around for the last showing around midnight.

On our way out of the park, we stopped for one more photopass photo, before heading toward the monorail.

By the time we got to bed at the GF, it was around 1:30 in the morning. Yes, it was waaaaay past my bedtime, but we'd had a wonderfully productive and fun Halloween party. I was beginning to feel the need to make the most of the time we had left in WDW, as we were headed into our second-to-last day.

Up next: our next morning would have a later start, but we were in for some pampering, and then some fun at EPCOT!

The only part I'm not crazy about is toward the end when they try to incorporate A Whole New World.

Yeah, that kinda threw me off too when I watched the streamed debut.

I get where they're coming from, but I think they could have done something different that would fit better without using a movie song

I do too, but maybe... an original score or something??

but all the EPCOT music in EPCOT Forever really does it for me! :)

I adore that score!!!

Amazing, indeed! I wondered how it might compare to something like V&A's (which we also hope to do someday.) It was such an incredible treat!

I can't wait to write my review, but that's not for a LONG time!

it's easy to stay in a headspace where you're always a little on edge and pessimistic with the world, but being in the presence of these gentle creatures for a couple of hours put my mind completely at rest. :cloud9:

Aww, I love that you found some rest and refreshing.

Did everyone go commercialism crazy today with Black Friday sales!?

I did, but not because of the deals; I simply found some time off and figured out what to get my grandkiddos.

My excited arm was more "excited" than N's excited arm.

HAHA!

Before we parted ways, we all felt a sweaty friends selfie was required to commemorate the morning we had together.

The BEST way to commemorate a meeting of friends!!

he told me we could still be seated and it would be just a moment.

YAY!!! 20 minutes is in the Maybe-Not-Zone.

The food was reasonably good, but I have in my notes that "our server dropped the ball." I remember service being very slow and things we asked for never coming, like another glass of juice, etc.

Not okay.

Tips tend to disappear if that sort of shenanigans goes on.

How fun!!!

A little over halfway into our intended half hour of boating, we were signalled by the water patrol. Unfortunately, there was lightning in the area and we were instructed to head straight back to the marina immediately.

Well shoot....

Since our time was cut shorter than 30 minutes, the cast member at the docks told us we wouldn't have to pay anything for our rental. :thumbsup2

.... or not!!

Ka-ching!!

We sauntered back to our room for some downtime

The best place to go before a party and the BEST way to get there. ;)

jfX7BRt.jpg

I was very proud of my homemade costume, complete with feather-wrapped hot-glued cat ears, and a homemade tutu.

It turned out so cute!! I was also Cheshire, but went with a commercial one.

Adorable!!

"Oh no!" I exclaimed to him. "We're going to have to TALK!"

LOL!

It had muenster cheese and tater tots, and an ooky spooky purply-black bun. As far as quick service burgers go, he loooooved this!

I loved this burger a LOT! I had it last year. :)

I prefer to watch my party parades from Frontierland so as not to fight the Main Street crowds
ME TOO!! Spookier and generally far less crowded.

The gravediggers are 100% my favourite part, followed by the ballroom dancers.
I switch the order, but both perfectly amazing!

What is a Halloween party, really, without a visit to see the Happy Haunts?

It isn't.

Since we were dressed as the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter, I just couldn't pass up these character meets!

There was no WAY you could pass that up. And neither did I.

except for the aptly nicknamed, "puke cups"...which happened to be right beside us.

The only appropriate name for them.

I swallowed hard, took a few deep breaths, and engaged my brain as fully as possible in the conversation with N and Heather.

Phew! Crisis averted!

:rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao:
I was very happy that it seemed to still be functioning properly.
Phew... again!

I did, but not because of the deals; I simply found some time off and figured out what to get my grandkiddos.

The BEST reason for Black Friday shopping :)

YAY!!! 20 minutes is in the Maybe-Not-Zone.

That's exactly what I thought, too. Glad they took pity on me and let us in!

It turned out so cute!! I was also Cheshire, but went with a commercial one.

I remember your Cheshire as well, and it was wonderful! Such a fun character to embody :)

ME TOO!! Spookier and generally far less crowded.

Agreed!

This photo is one of my favourites and still makes me laugh! My reaction was not even slightly staged.

Yep, this sounds familiar.
::yes::
Yes, we were very fancy. I don't know how we'll cope when we have a regular old economy car next time.
Occupational hazard. :)
Thanks, friend! I'll always keep this in mind.
Pretty sure you have my number. PM me if you don't or want it.
I'll see what I can do!
Okay!
We've been once for breakfast and once for lunch. Nathan probably has a slight preference for breakfast, but I think I slightly preferred the lunch there. If it ever fits into your plans, it's been good for us!
Thanks for the tip. :)
Nathan would agree with you. And it's a tight race for me, but I'm also a very Christmasy person. And I have more nostalgia attached to the Christmas parade as well. My mom and I saw it a few times together on trips before I ever started taking Nathan to WDW, whereas I only saw Boo for the first time a couple of years ago.
Nostalgia trumps a lot.... A lot.
He actually doesn't do a lot of drawing in his daily life though. It's one of the areas where he feels like he needs the most practice and improvement. Other than for his stencils, most of what he does for work is about layers, and colour choices, and palette knife techniques and whatnot. So he had a lot of fun taking the time to try to hone his drawing skills!
Yeah, I can see how that would be so. ::yes::
Apparently they migrate when the temperatures drop because they can't survive in cooler water temperatures. There are springs in Crystal River that keep the water a consistent warm temperature (I wanna say somewhere around 72-74F, but don't quote me on that because I didn't look it up...) So when the gulf starts getting colder, they know to head to the warmer water for the winter.
Ah! Okay, makes sense. :)
Totally! We braved the water a little longer and were rewarded! Our guide also said something about how the other folks were drinking red bull or something like that, and she claimed that the manatees can sense your heart rate through the water and she thought that they were drawn to a slower more peaceful heart rate, and put off by people whose hearts are racing (perhaps from drinking an energy drink,) etc. I'd go out on a limb and say we were also a little more patient and gentle with the manatees than the other guy who got out. I noticed he jumped the gun a few times and tried to reach out to the manatees when they might not have been totally into it.
So remain calm and still... got it. :)
We were allowed to, and they sell those protective sleeves for phones and disposable water cameras, but they don't really recommend it if you want to be fully immersed in the experience. They take photos on a waterproof digital camera and you can purchase them after the tour (shocker!) It was a reasonable price though. Something like $30. So we coughed up the money for the photos on a USB.
Yeah, I think I'd shell out for that too. :)
It was fabulous! Something about being around marine animals makes me feel so content, and I think N is the same way. And they DO make sounds, but I don't think that's what you are hearing in the video. They made a higher-pitched kind of squeal (especially the babies when calling to their moms.) But our guide in the water with us also liked to "talk" to them and croon to them, so I think that's what you can hear in the video if I remember right. :lmao:
OMG... so those noises were the guide????

:lmao:
Amazing! I haven't tasted anything quite like it before.
Right?????
It really was! Such an interesting texture. Nathan was very excited to try it. (He also really wants to try Japanese cheesecake, so maybe he'll get to try that next time.)
I was very hesitant... it doesn't look good, but... :)

Back to read the update later. :)

Did everyone go commercialism crazy today with Black Friday sales!?
Totally! I bought an Amazon Fire Stick... $35! Woot! Look at me carrying the entire economy on my back!
I have, however, been considering taking advantage of the deal online at BJ's right now for discounted Disney gift cards for our upcoming trip,
What is that?
I had just dyed my hair extra pink the night before
Cute. As long as you dye it blue for our space meet.
My excited arm was more "excited" than N's excited arm.
But same height. It's all about symmetry.
The sisters didn't know quite why the selfie stop was a must, but they just took it at face value that it absolutely was.
E was worried about getting wet—as she's a lovely girl who's sweet as sugar and, hence, would likely melt
Oh dear.
This ^ photo has since become a wonderful memento in my friendship with L.
Woot! and... whee!!!!
Before we parted ways, we all felt a sweaty friends selfie was required to commemorate the morning we had together.
But of course. But you all look great. :)
This photo ^ is an excellent representation of how incredibly warm and humid it already was this morning. That, of course, was also exacerbated by the pace we'd taken to get to the monorail in the first place.
You look wonderful. :)
I have in my notes that "our server dropped the ball." I remember service being very slow and things we asked for never coming, like another glass of juice, etc.
Well, that's not okay. :(
"As long as they have fingers, they're good to go!" (Autographs = check!)
Great! So.... they didn't have fingers before? They grew them? Cool.
The Mad Hatter was a lot of fun, but Alice was the very best! She was quirky, and curious, and very animated.
Alice? Curious? Who would've thought that!

I was very proud of my homemade costume, complete with feather-wrapped hot-glued cat ears, and a homemade tutu.
I like it! :)
N looked at his phone and realized the battery was almost dead. "Oh no!" I exclaimed to him. "We're going to have to TALK!"
The horror! :lmao:
You may remember that I had gotten sick a couple of days earlier in the trip.
I do, actually.
The photopass photos don't make it look too bad, but let the selfie record show that I was sweating like a stuck pig!
Nah. Ya look great. :)

Since we were dressed as the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter, I just couldn't pass up these character meets!
Absolutely! You have to!
We decided to sit and wait until after the parade when they returned, being promised by a character attendant that we'd be first to meet them in their next set.
Dedication. ::yes::

:goodvibes What a great interaction!

Glad the camera was (mostly) okay! Wonder what would've happened if he'd broken it?

Love your costumes, but man this trip seems like so long ago. If I remember right we were at the party the same night but didn't meet up so you didn't share your lovely cough with us 😀 I kept looking at your pics wondering if we'd somehow crossed paths and didn't know it but closest we came was sitting in the same area during the parade, but we did the 2nd one and not the first.

Sounds like such a fun night! I'm totally with you on waiting for the characters before the party instead of during--we did the same thing when we met the 7 Dwarfs several years ago. I am obsessed with your Cheshire Cat costume--so so cute!

Then later on in the early afternoon we decided to head out to the docks to rent a boat!
Fun! I’ve always liked the idea of cruising around WDW. I’m not sure I’ll ever do it, but you never know.

I was very proud of my homemade costume, complete with feather-wrapped hot-glued cat ears, and a homemade tutu.
Costumes look great!
My family couldn’t decide on costumes so just took the easy way out and got tshirts made.

We were fortunate to meet Moana at 6:11, before the actual party had even begun!
You did better than me. We got in line for her around 6:00 but it was over 2hours before we finally met her.

Since we were dressed as the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter, I just couldn't pass up these character meets!
Definitely couldn’t miss those meets!

Thanks so much, Tracy! I'm sure you understand how stressful school can be and how it can affect your mental health!
I sure do...

I'm rolling into final presentations and exams over the next couple of weeks, and then after that I have one more internship left from January to March/April. Then, if I play my cards right, I'm out in the world as a grown-up real-life speech-language pathologist!
You will be done with this chapter before you know it! I still cannot believe that I am. The last year went by in a blink. I'm sure it'll be the same for you and then you'll be loving your next chapter as a grown-up real-life speech-language pathologist! And it'll all have been so worth it!

Absolutely adorable photos with the characters and then later in your costumes, too! :thumbsup2

We do some serious Pokemon battling while we wait for the train to leave.

We play Pokemon too. It started as something to do as a family since the kids really wanted to do it. Now I am the only one that plays consistently.

Alice was the very best! She was quirky, and curious, and very animated.

Alice is one of our favorite meets. We did the meet at EPCOT and it was raining so she was meeting inside. The kids we young and a bit wet. Alice took them around the store skipping to dry off. It was cute and fun.

I'm highly emetophobic, i.e. I super phobic of vomit. It sounds silly, but the anxiety I experience around seeing/hearing others puke is no laughing matter

I am the same way but also very scared to vomit myself. it is horrible. I do have to say having kids has helped but DH deals with it so i don't have to.

Loved the recap of your recent trip! It seems like you both had a lot of fun and did some special things!

Glad you could meet up with some friends at MK!

Sounds like a fun time on the boat - even though it was cut short at least it was free!

LOVE your Halloween costumes!!

So many great character meets! But especially Queen of Hearts and the Tweedles! I'm glad you waited around for it, especially considering your costumes! Sounds like you guys really enjoyed your night!

I'm so behind, so I didn't quote anything, but really loved reading about your jam-packed fun filled day!! Your costumes were adorable, and so smart to avoid a ton of layers or sweaty costume-y items!

We had a similar character-waiting parade experience at our last MVMCP! We were next in line to meet Bert and Mary Poppins when they had to dash off for the parade. Some of the other guests waiting were less than kind to the poor CM managing the line. We happily stayed with her chatting and passing the time until they returned. Our experience meeting them was nothing short of magical! It's nice when characters reward your good behavior :)

OMG... so those noises were the guide????

:lmao:

Right!? Hard to believe it was a human!

Totally! I bought an Amazon Fire Stick... $35! Woot! Look at me carrying the entire economy on my back!

Wow! Don't go spending all your money in one place!

What is that?

BJs had a sale on Disney gift cards online for Black Friday through till [I believe] todayish. I think it was around 6-7% off retail price.

But of course. But you all look great. :)

Thanks! Disney joy trumps Florida sweat when it comes to looking nice in pictures.

Great! So.... they didn't have fingers before? They grew them? Cool.

That's the only logical explanation I could think of.

:goodvibes What a great interaction!

Yes! Sometimes cast members really do make the most magical moments, just by taking the time to interact with you and take an interest.

Oh dear. Glad you were able to get through it.

Thanks! I was determined, and proud of myself for keeping it together.

Glad the camera was (mostly) okay! Wonder what would've happened if he'd broken it?

I wondered this, too. I mean, anything I bring into the park is technically my responsibility I guess, and I shouldn't have set it on the ground if I wanted to keep it safe. But I wonder if they would have done anything if he'd broken it. It was a brand new camera at the time, too. I'd JUST purchased it shortly before our trip.

Love your costumes, but man this trip seems like so long ago.

That would be because it was so long ago. Sooo very long ago! Like over 15 months ago! I really need to get things finished up around here soon... Only two more park days left to report on!

If I remember right we were at the party the same night but didn't meet up so you didn't share your lovely cough with us 😀

I believe this was the case! I had hoped we'd get to meet up, but I definitely didn't want you getting sick, especially since Casey was about to head back to school. And I also wasn't sure how yucky I'd be feeling and if it would make me a grouchy/sleepy Disfriend when we met, so I figured I'd better save it for next time. But I hope we'll manage a meet in future!

Sounds like such a fun night! I'm totally with you on waiting for the characters before the party instead of during--we did the same thing when we met the 7 Dwarfs several years ago. I am obsessed with your Cheshire Cat costume--so so cute!

It was such a fun night! Waiting before the party is where it's at! We've never done the dwarfs but I've thought about it. They're so cute! And thank you! I was really happy with, and I loved that it was cool for summer :)

Fun! I’ve always liked the idea of cruising around WDW. I’m not sure I’ll ever do it, but you never know.

It was a nice option for something different and relaxing to do outside the parks. I'd recommend it, but never at the expense of missing out on something really important to you in the parks of course.

Costumes look great!
My family couldn’t decide on costumes so just took the easy way out and got tshirts made.

Thanks so much! Honestly, I think sometimes fun tshirts are the way to go. Nathan and I were talking about this after our most recent Halloween party this past August where we also did costumes. (And my costumes tend to be a little more elaborate and a little less "street clothes" than his.) But with all the effort that goes in to making sure my costume looks okay, and the lack of comfort from things like headbands/head pieces, etc., scratchy fabrics, etc., I'm thinking that if we ever go to another Halloween party again that we'll just wear themed shirts and leave it at that. I had a great time posing for photos with our costumes and doing related character meets, but I think the comfort of just walking around in a comfy t-shirt and shorts might even make me enjoy the party more in the end.

You did better than me. We got in line for her around 6:00 but it was over 2hours before we finally met her.

Oofff! Yeah, I think I remember hearing that. Not the longest character wait I've ever heard of, but pretty incredibly painful. You were dedicated!!

You will be done with this chapter before you know it! I still cannot believe that I am. The last year went by in a blink. I'm sure it'll be the same for you and then you'll be loving your next chapter as a grown-up real-life speech-language pathologist! And it'll all have been so worth it!

Thanks, Tracy! I hope you're right! I know there are things I'll miss, especially like the friends I have made in my program, but I'll be so glad to be on to the next chapter! I have two more presentations tomorrow and the next day, then one more exam next week, and then I'm off to Christmas and just down to my internship left! Counting down the days, checking the things off the list...

Absolutely adorable photos with the characters and then later in your costumes, too! :thumbsup2

Thank you!! I'm so pleased with how our costumed pictures came out! Definitely worth the wait!

We play Pokemon too. It started as something to do as a family since the kids really wanted to do it. Now I am the only one that plays consistently.

Fun! Yeah, it's kind of addictive. The first time we started playing was shortly after the game came out, and I tired of it before too long. But when we started again more recently, there are things they'd added in that are kinda neat, and now my husband and I are kind of competitive with each other about it, who's the higher level, who has what pokemon, etc., and it keeps it interesting for us :) Disney is a great spot for it when you're waiting for things!

Alice is one of our favorite meets. We did the meet at EPCOT and it was raining so she was meeting inside. The kids we young and a bit wet. Alice took them around the store skipping to dry off. It was cute and fun.

How fun! She's such a wonderfully interesting and friendly character! That's a great memory with your kids.

I am the same way but also very scared to vomit myself. it is horrible. I do have to say having kids has helped but DH deals with it so i don't have to.

As an adult who has only vomited once in the last 15 years, despite having a neurological condition that causes nausea, I can definitely relate. I've been this way as long as I can remember. The thought of actually vomiting is very frightening to me. I don't know that we will ever have kids, but if we did, Nathan would definitely be the designated puke handler. He also has a bit more of a comforting/nurturing type of personality than I think I would for these types of situations, so I think it would work out well in the end.

So many great character meets! But especially Queen of Hearts and the Tweedles! I'm glad you waited around for it, especially considering your costumes! Sounds like you guys really enjoyed your night!

Thanks so much! We had a really fun day and night for the most part, and had a great time at the party with our character meets :)

I'm so behind, so I didn't quote anything, but really loved reading about your jam-packed fun filled day!! Your costumes were adorable, and so smart to avoid a ton of layers or sweaty costume-y items!

Thanks so much! We had fun with our costumes, and with all the crazy stuff we crammed into one day! I totally agree that sometimes good behaviour pays off at WDW. I think the characters and cast members really appreciate it when you're patient and kind and decent. Sometime the wait is worth it. Sounds like you had a really magical experience with Mary and Bert just like we did with the Queen of Hearts!

Right!? Hard to believe it was a human!
:lmao:
Wow! Don't go spending all your money in one place!
Uh... pretty much did!
BJs had a sale on Disney gift cards online for Black Friday through till [I believe] todayish. I think it was around 6-7% off retail price.
No... what's BJs??
Thanks! Disney joy trumps Florida sweat when it comes to looking nice in pictures.

But I wonder if they would have done anything if he'd broken it. It was a brand new camera at the time, too. I'd JUST purchased it shortly before our trip.
Brand new? Not broken, but... even scuffed you must've not been too happy about that.

No... what's BJs??

BJ's Wholesale Club. It's like another Costco/Sam's Club type wholesale store. I don't think it exists in Canada?? I don't have a membership, but I've heard the online memberships are inexpensive. I do have a Sam's Club membership for now because there's one in a city we often visit in Maine and it paid for itself when I bought all my Disney gift cards there to pay for our August trip. But most of our wholesaling happens at Costco.

Brand new? Not broken, but... even scuffed you must've not been too happy about that.

My heart sank a little, and I felt a little sick, not gonna lie. It took some time to save for it, and I'd barely even broken it in. But I felt a little better when I checked that it was still working.
