Photos from 4/24/09- 900 Loop, Pool, and a few other things . . .

TCD,
The next time you are at FW could I get you to snap a few shots of the 800 loop towards the back part of the loop? I was wondering, as we are scheduled to stay there in May......:worship::worship:

Your ticker says that you will be at the Fort in two weeks and four days. I don't think I will be back there that soon. But, if I am, I'll see what I can do. The outside sites on the back part of the 800 loop look like the sites on 900-since they back up to each other. These are nice sites if you can get them.

I’m pretty sure that’s a picnic table. If you look just below the top and right side of the site marker and at the RV just below where the water hose connects you can see what looks like the pipe legs of the old picnic tables.

Thanks. I see the metal legs now. I didn't think a fence made sense in that location, but that is what it looked like to me.

I am of German heritage...but no! Those were the colors of the late 70's.

I'm here to warn you.....they are starting to creep back into home decorating!!

Oh, geez save us all! As a kid, my house had stripes on the wall, just like that going on a DIAGONAL down our staircase, wrapping around the wall into the living room....:hippie:

Groovy! I can top that though. Have you ever noticed the wallpaper in the loading area of the Haunted Mansion? It is like foil with burgundy felt-like designs (I think that they call that flocked)? Well, imagine the same wallpaper in avocado and gold. That is what we had on our living room walls back when I was a kid! :hippie: Every time I go in the HM, I think of my old childhood home.

Fort Wilderness is a magical place, as those who have visited before can attest.

Sometimes, the most simple and routine things turn out to be special and memorable.

And so it was with our plain old take out chicken dinner from Trail's End on Friday night.

As I already mentioned, the weather on Friday was perfect. It got a little hot in the afternoon, but as evening approached, a nice breeze picked up, and it was just warm and pleasant.

The take out menu at Trail's End is pretty simple. For those of you who haven't seen it, this is it:

The Giddyap and Go is the best deal on WDW property. We enjoy one of those on almost every camping trip. I strongly recommend that you spring for the extra few bucks it costs for the all white meat option. The all white meat version gives you a lot more chicken. We always pick it up and bring it back to the site.

But, I have always wanted to pick up the chicken dinner, and then picnic around the corner on the porch. There are two picnic tables there. They overlook the playground and Bay Lake. But, when we arrived, a large group had commandeered the picnic tables, and had just begun to eat. Here they are:

These folks look like they have done this before. Also, note that they have the old school brown Trail's End refillable mugs. These are not rookies.

So, we ordered our food, and found some open rockers, and watched the world go by.

This is a great spot to people watch. We were there at just before 7. So, there was a crowd just entering the Hoop Dee Do, and a crowd leaving. Do you know that it is all you can eat and drink in the Hoop Dee Do? And the drink includes beer and wine? Invariably, there is someone heading out of the show a little wobbly on his feet. Fun stuff. For example, check out the gentleman in the coon skin hat in this photo being observed by the Disney po po. He was feeling no pain:

FW42409196.jpg

All kinds of things will come by if you sit on the porch. Folks on golf carts, folks on bikes, and folks in horse-drawn carriages:

FW42409195.jpg

Well, before we knew it, our food was ready. It was all packed up nice, including plates, utensils, napkins and ketchup. Everything we needed.

But, the tables were still occupied. :( And, these folks were not going anywhere soon.

One of my DD's mentioned that she had seen a couple of picnic tables down on the beach. We wandered down there, and found two empty tables. We took the one that was right on the wood line. Here it is:

And here is the view we had from there:

Now, imagine that you are sitting there, watching the sun set, with a nice breeze blowing off the lake. Imagine further that there is soft music playing in the background. The nice, soothing music, like you hear sitting on the porch outside of Crockett's. Wait, did I say music?

Yes, it was coming right out of this speaker next to the trash can:

This was a magical place to enjoy our meal. We were surrounded by the non-stop activity of the Fort, yet we had a quiet, private, spot to enjoy our meal. Truly magical!

Despite our big appetites, we have never completely finished the Giddyap and Go meal. There is so much food! So, in addition to a few pieces of chicken, we had a bunch of biscuits left over.

DD decided to share the food with the ducks that had been politely eyeballing us throughout our meal:

You might notice that there are a couple of young boys who joined DD in feeding the ducks. They were visiting the beach with their mom. I think they were from the Boston area. They had the greatest time running up and down the beach and having the ducks chase them. Good fun!

As the sun continued to sink in the sky, we packed up, and decided to head out to Epcot.

We headed up to the Settlement bus stop to catch a bus to the Outpost.

I snapped these photos on the way, as there occasionally are folks on the boards who ask about the horse drawn excursions:

I also snapped a few photos of the area where there used to be a trailer on display. If you didn't know it was there ,you might walk right by it. There used to be a trailer that sat here. As you can see, there was a platform built that allowed folks to walk up and look in the windows. I believe the last one there was a Coachman Futura. It always seemed a little strange to me to have one trailer sitting here. The platform and electric connections are still here (sorry for the blurry photos-it was really starting to get dark at this point):

We headed to the bus stop, where we found a yellow and orange bus waiting.

We took the yellow bus, and headed out.

We got to the Outpost, hopped in the car, and took off for Epcot. We got to Epcot at around 8:30, hit Soarin', and then visited a few of the countries. It was EMH at Epcot, and since they don't use the wristbands anymore, we could stay as long as we wanted, even though we were not resort guests on this visit. We could not ride any of the rides, but there was no problem just visiting the countries and their shops.

We finally called it a night at a little after 10, and headed for home.

It was a great day.

And, that's all I have.

Until next time.

Great as always, I learn more from your day trip then I would see for myself in a week. :thumbsup2

Wonder if the Boston kids were Karla's, aka 3gr8kids?

Now if that isn't THE best meal you can eat on all of WDW property, I don't know what is! :cloud9:

DH and I are so going to do this in November. A bunch of times. :goodvibes

TCD - If you walk down the path towards MBYBBQ there is a concrete walkway to the right that leads to Clementine's Beach. You will also find a few picnic tables there - but no speakers. There are always the tables to the right of the boat rental building, too!! :thumbsup2

If they don't use the wristbands for EMH, what do you have to do to do the rides?

If they don't use the wristbands for EMH, what do you have to do to do the rides?

You have to show your KTTW Card (room key/resort ID) at the entrance to each and every ride. Not just yours, either, you need a card for each member in your party. You have to show it every time. For every ride. A major PITA if you ask me. When we are at the Fort, I hang on to all the KTTW cards, especially the ones with charging privileges. I hate that I have to carry these around and constantly have to pull them out and show them at each ride.

There is no doubt in my mind that Disney did this for one reason: The Almighty Dollar. They are happy that non-resort guests stick around on EMH nights, so they can continue to separate them from their money. It was rather crowded in the World Showcase after the park closed, which was never the case when wristbands were required.

But, I am not complaining, because the other option would be to stop EMH's altogether. They did it when things got slow in 2001 after 9/11, and it they didn't start back for quite a while after that.

Well DW and I were discussing on our last trip what that platform hidden in the bushes near Pioneer Hall was for. We incorrectly concluded that it must have been used to load people onto the wagon rides at one time. Seems really odd that a display trailer was placed in that spot. But, since Disney was likely getting some sort of kickback from Coachman, it doesn't seem THAT odd!

No, it was definitely built to display a trailer. And it was odd. IRRC it was just a travel trailer, and it really wasn't all that remarkable. I remember that the actual entrance door was removed, and they put a piece of Plexiglas in its place. They had place-mats and a bowl of plastic fruit on the table. I never understood what the trailer was doing there, as there were no brochures or other advertisements telling you why the thing was sitting here to be looked at.

I googled Coachman Futura Display at Fort Wilderness, and I actually found a site that has a PDF of a Coachman brochure describing this whole marketing scheme.

Here is what the text from the brochure says:

C O A C H M E N R V F O R M S A L L I A N C E W I T H D I S N E Y

I am pretty sure that the trailer depicted on the cover is the same as the one that they had on display. You could look in the windows, and the doors were replaced with Plexiglass.

Obviously, whatever deal there was fell through quite a while ago, because that trailer has been gone for a long time.

TCD, the table where you had the picnic had a priceless view. Add that to the things to do at the fort list. Great report as always.

Hey Tony, if you have any "orange" shots that need reviving, this is what I can do with a little Photoshop-magic:

Site9151979.jpg

Be glad to help you out, you do so much for us... filling in all the gaps left in TCD's reporting! :lmao:

:santa:

EDIT: Ooops, Comptech beat me too it! LOL

:thumbsup2

When we at the Fort- one of my favorite things to do is get the chicken dinner from TE and we take it down to the beach. Matt and I grab a table at the marina right by the edge of the sand so the boys can run around and play while we wait- then they feed the ducks all the leftovers- though with 6 of us eating, there isnt much- usually just some fries left ;)

But sitting on the beach, watching the sunset, the boys playing- its priceless and definitly something that we do every trip! Even better is not having to cook or wash dishes for a night! :thumbsup2

TCD- another reat TR as always! I love all the pictures- the sunset ones are great!
